Some of my recommendations for types of gun owners, living here in CA: New owners with no interest in really doing their own in-depth/more complex gunsmithing like installing triggers, barrels, buffer tubes, handguards, etc., go featureless. The simpler installation of handguard attachments, stock stops and pistol grips are all you'll really need. There are some great featureless grips like the Juggernaut Tactical one, and Strike Industries stock stops are great, without having to physically modify your buffer tube or a stock, and can be used between rifles if you have similar builds. Some stocks simply need a paperclip to make them fixed, but not all if you are eyeing other companies. And some fixed stocks such as the one from Magpul are great. For other types of owners, you've kind of already made up your mind. I personally run the Comp-Mag because of the ease of installation(no need to have to replace the rear takedown pin and/or bolt catch again for convenience sake), but also to maintain a normal rifle, especially if you are training with it and plan to move out of CA.

What’s up Reno, I know you touched on ARs that aren’t really ARs. And the Sig was a phenomenal example. When I was going through my wanting an AR phase I was actually looking at one. But the price was a bit steep for a humble warehouse worker. I think it would be cool to go over not AR, AR type firearms both for budget friendly and higher end options. I went with the KELTEC SU16CA for my first rifle (before I built baby) and it’s still one of my favorites. Rifle style stock, takes standard AR mags (can hold extras in the stock) and is actually collapsible for SHTF moments. Might have already made a video like this but if I can get the guys over at keltec some extra love I’ll take that opportunity. Keep on keep in on!

Counter point on the Kali Key: Its also compliant in the streets and AW in the sheets, and faster to swap than the compag or the BRS. Its also has a niche for handloaders using boutique calibers and trying to keep all rare brass. So it might be the best option for someone running a non 5.56 AR. But you are correct when it comes to every other point

A great reason to not recommend fixed mag as a defensive rifle is that when used with a buffered system, if you get a double feed, you are taken out of the fight until you can strip both rounds from the chamber because you can't open the action to drop the mag to clear the double feed.
@joeysisneros61796 ай бұрын
You can clear the action no problem with the ar maglock and freedom fighter kit, if you file the pin down a little bit it allows you to break the action and drop the mag with the bolt locked back to clear jams and double feeds.

@RenoMay is right. The kingpin is superior in every way. So is the AR maglock gen 2 over the juggernaut bolt catch delete maglock. I work at a gun shop in San Jose. I've probably installed 100 AR maglocks and kingpins. And I've had to un-fuck about 10 or 15 juggernaut pins where the detent jumped out of the track of the pin and it jammed it all up. I'd actually recommend getting the Gen 2 Maglock over the Gen 4. The gen 4 can adjust it's width, but that is rarely needed unless you have a specialized upper and/or lower - and it's only held together by a super dinky set screw that's ludicrously easy to lose if it comes loose. The Gen 2 has the same narrow tooth as the gen 4, but has a much more robust screw holding it together that you can really loctite in. I also recommend when installing it to shave down 1mm of the AR-maglock tooth so there is no binding up of the tooth to the side of the receiver, nor will it get caught between them when you close the upper again. And it's still plenty long to keep you from being able to release the mag when it's all closed.

I just have a maglock since i dont have any freedom week mags. Now if you dont have any freedom week mags does your choice stay the same or does it change?

It makes it much less disproportionate and more of a 60-40 preference. I’d still generally go featureless. But it makes AR pistols much more desirable for defensive use.

Hogue freedom fighter is great. Used that on all my AR's and have had no issues.

Hogue + Kingpin is the best break-top setup by far. Super reliable and quick.

Same setup on all my ARs

Surprisingly easy to install too. They've done a good job with that. The only thing that had me nervous was tapping the hole for threads--but did it on 3 BCMs, zero problems.
