I played on pad until my wrists started to hurt so I built a leverless for ergonomics. I love it, and now tinkering on it is sometimes more fun than actually playing fighting games. It's a lot of fun trying out new buttons, adding on new switches or LEDs or whatever, it's a good thing to have as a project if you're the tinkering type. It can be a secondary or sub-hobby all on its own.

I think a huge advantage of leaverless that almost nobody talks about when having this conversation is how much nicer it is on your hands, especially when you're playing for long periods of time. There are a lot of characters I play who are very high APM input monsters that are fine on box, who I wouldn't want to play on stick because constantly doing microdashed special inputs and motion input stance cancels behind everything is going to crank my wrist in the long run. On box the characters are still hard, but I can physically play the game without hurting my hands.

Definitely, compared to an arcade stick they're much more ergonomic and usually much more lighter too. But I would never suggest it to new players since starting out on hbox is one of the worst experiences you can have in a FG, I swear. You use fingers in a way you never usually do before, unless you practice piano or something lol. I say this personally as I don't ever really experience fatigue in my hands using a controller compared to the hitbox and will burnout mentally before I feel any cramps. It is a pain, but it's really fun.

I remember when I first started, I usually inputted more than twice and couldn't control my twitchiness. I still haven't gotten used to it honestly but it does sound like mine is a special case. I ended up getting a stick a year ago mostly to save my wrists (chronic tendinitis) after trying to play with both a pad and keyboard. Turns out, not only is it much nicer on my wrists, I'm substantially more accurate with it. I never accidentally jump like I did on pad, I never fat-finger the wrong button like I did on keyboard. Leverless hurts my left wrist the same way keyboard does, which I don't think is what most people experience, but it does for me.

Something to note on the subject of leverless controllers is they can be ergonomically nicer than pads (super cramped) or sticks (wrist issues + lever == pain). The wide variety of custom layouts available in the space also helps with this. I use a wider mixbox style leverless that puts a lot of space between my hands because I find the standard hitbox layout physically painful.

13:33 - Man, I feel you so much! I had a cheap joystick growing up in rural Greece in the '80s and it almost never worked. I also got to play games like Bubble Bobble, Shinobi, Snow Bros, etc. _at best_ once a year because arcades were 17+ except in a nearby mountain village during summer festivals. Also, Tekken 3 is the actual reason I got a Playstation in '98-I didn't wanna waste my lunch money every day! Fast forward to today and I sometimes look for games to play on an arcade stick for _me_ and to hell with what's optimal! It's about nostalgia and having a good time and enjoying the peripherals along with the game! (Definitely recommend Dead Cells, Streets of Rage 4, and the new TMNT with a stick).

I have wrist/hand issues so I can't use pad for very long without serious pain. On top of that, I've never never never been able to get comfortable (mechanically) with playing on pad, despite playing casually for 20 years. I switched to stick when Strive came out and it's the ideal mode for me. Lever's fine on the wrist and I like the vibe of it. Octogate for life! One thing I really like about stick is being able to hear my buttons while playing. This makes it so much easier to train my rhythm when it comes to combos/blockstrings. Memorize the sound and play it back, just like an instrument. On that note, I think really accurate play on stick/leverless just sounds good to the ear. LK's got gorgeous inputs, it's a joy to listen to him play lol

Pretty sure I've seen Zato players bind all 4 normal attacks to the shoulders, which actually lets them negative edge way easier stick/leverless (at the expense of more awkward control scheme overall).

Quarter circle motions are kind of weird because the downforward motion needs to be connected fluid ish, but the ability to dash and not way for the stick to resume to neutral has been great.

I wore my thumb out on my last gamepad, and repetitive stress injuries have my hands and wrists aching if I play too much (I clutch the pad when I'm stressed which hurts my hands, and my wrists complain after about an hour of joystick motions), so Hitbox is just the best for letting me play pain-free. Big learning curve, but it's been worth it.

One benefit of the controller is you already know how to use one of you already play videogames. You have to learn to use the other controllers. So with controller you already have one and can start learning the characters and controls of your chosen game without needing to buy anything new

Keep in midn that if you dont live in the americas, japan or korea pre built arcade sticks / hitboxes are rare and will cost you a lot more since you likely have to import them and pay additional taxes.

I played GGST on a basic Xbox controller and had a great time, for SF6 I got a Mayflash f300 because I prefer arcade stick for 6 button fighters. It's cheap and feels like a good beginner stick with some room for customization

Take it from a guy who switched to leverless after dabbling in fighting games on pad & stick: pick leverless. Unless you are already at the level where you can consistently do whatever you want, all the time, without worrying about misinputs or being too slow with your input, then leverless will be an upgrade. When people say "it takes some getting used to" they make it sound like it takes months, but it's like a week at most. So, if you're a PC gamer and don't wanna spent a few hundred bucks on a hitbox, keyboard is basically just as fast (button travel time can be a bit slower). Also! It has a shortcut for backdash cancelling in Tekken (doing it the right way is faster though).

I think one thing people discount about leverless is that tbh it can be pretty unnatural to play on. Pad & stick are the most "organic" and intuitive because the way you execute movement is always the same (pad = thumb, stick = hand/wrist). Where on leverless left = ring finger, down = middle finger, right = index finger, jump = left or right thumb and you do different combinations of 4 fingers for different things. This doesn't exist to the same degree on other controllers. I play on all the periphs and I have a custom leverless layout myself. I find that doing specific things on leverless can definitely be easier and faster, but doing other things can be harder and more unnatural even if it has the potetial to be strictly better. The perfect example is stick Zangief vs leverless Zangief. It's literally better to be leverless for him but doing the 360s and 720s is straight up fucking weird and unnatural where it makes perfect sense on stick

I use the joystick in pads for fg so the octagonal gate on the hori joysticks helps so much. Now i upgraded to the victrix bc it also has an octagonal gate too. The HORI is amazing and was a great starting point

Responsive, better diagnol inputs, 10 buttons (6 face+bumpers/triggers) and the underside has 2 switches 1 for (Sony version) ps4/ps5/PC and the other for locking out the Share button/TouchPad to prevent accidental inputs.

I'm one of the only people I know who plays and competes with controller using analogue stick. I've top eighted majors (TFC under the name TwistedAsura) and I even played against you LK back in like 2015ish in blazblue (of course you stomped me lol). For me what I think it is is that I'm left handed so the more precise movements of using my thumb on the analogue stick are easy and consistent for me, but that's just a guess. I do think there are some advantages to certain controllers/pads/sticks over others but at the end of the day play what works best for you. Great advice here.

The biggest problem i had with the pad that made switch to A-stick was not that its inferior or anything but it give blisters on my fingers any other game was good but for fighting games it was unbearable. It made go through the whole process of learning to use a-stick and i still think im better at using pad but i cant use it

I've been playing fighting games since Street Fighter 2 in the arcade. But my ability to actually use a stick back then was time-limited. Once the game hit consoles I was playing on pad all the time. So I effectively learned to play on a pad and got years of muscle memory on it through the Playstation 1 and 2 eras. I did buy a stick when SF4 came out and I got decent with it playing charge characters, but I always had issues with motions whereas I had no issues with motions on pad. I also find dashing just way harder on stick then pad. So I went back to pad last week with the Hori Octa and I'm really enjoying it. Back in the mid to early 2000's, it seemed like the non-first-party pads were all some variation of defective trash (MadCatz, etc.). It is nice to be able to buy pads these days with some thought put into their construction.

I'm in the same boat. I loved going to arcades, but I could NOT get used to playing with sticks because I had grown up on Nintendo, Genesis, and Super Nintendo consoles. And my exposure to stick was very, very limited as I never went to arcades all that often. I liked stick somewhat, but I never knew how to really do inputs next to pad, it just seemed so tedious and cumbersome to me. Years later, like you with Street Fighter IV, I got interested in portable sticks because honestly...they just looked cool. At the time, I had been used to pad so long and it just seemed so boring, plus sticks had inputs with buttons that made things easier like the negative-edging. So I got a lower-end Soul Calibur V Hori Stick much later after Street Fighter IV had released to try it out and I liked stick and got a bit used to it, but I was too attached to pad to fully switch. I have picked up a custom Qanba Obsidian and have been using that and like it much better than the Hori, but I still have that muscle memory attached to pad. I'm not interested in Hitbox, though.

Durability, definitely. I've had a home-made stick for 2 years now, and it shows no signs of wear. Comfort, as well. I've never played on pad but compared to leverless which makes my hands hurt I find stick very comfortable. Nice tactile feel, moving the stick around is fun and feels nice. Tiger knee inputs are nicer to do in on stick than on leverless imo. Looks cool too, but that's subjective.

Arcade sticks aren't too expensive if you know where to look (if you just want a Qanba Drone or something). It is much better to try and get a used stick from somewhere than almost anything else if you really want to get into stick since they are quite durable. But I will say that the learning curve for stick or Hitbox (if you aren't used to them) can be a bit much compared to pad. The only thing that I can recommend when learning these new peripherals is to USE THEM ALL THE TIME IN EVERYTHING...not just fighting games. If you can competently play a game using a stick or a keyboard or a Hitbox (whether it is a beat-'em up, a shooting game, a platformer, etc.), go for it. I'd been doing Streets of Rage and other runs of games using stick and getting used to it quicker that way and that has helped. Practice is the name of the game no matter where you go and just see how things can work for you if you can get into a peripheral at a lower price point.

As a smash player playing SF6 as my first real fighting game that I am taking some what seriously. I am torn between pad and leverless. I built a "bubblebox" to try for smash and while it wasn't my favorite for smash I do enjoy it for SF6. I did pick up an 8bitdo arcade stick and an octagonal gate (seriously that is needed) but I am just not big of a fan of it. I get a lot of misinputs on stick but on "hitbox" if I get a misinput I usually know it was something I did wrong. On stick everything will feel right but its just wrong for some reason.

I mainly play on pad. With Street Fighter 6, I'm using a hori fighting commander with the 6 face buttons and hold it like a regular controller. Every time I try using my friends arcade stick. I can't really get inputs to come out when I want them to.

Playing on pad hurt my thumb rolling over then face buttons, I got a Hitbox and it feels much more comfortable. But I can't do SPDs on it, so when I want to play grapplers I borrow my sister's stick. Whatever feels comfortable.

Another disadvantage if the hitbox is how hard it is to mash with. This isn’t an issue at very high levels of play, but at intermediate and lower levels you may find yourself trying to DP through a frame trap during a block string or something and just completely fail because of how awkward it is to piano f -> d -> df at high speed. With a stick or pad you could roll the directions back and forth as a “shortcut” but it won’t work well on a lever-less.

If you rapid tap with your middle and pointer finger / ring finger you can definitely get DP out. The biggest issue I find is if you want to run up QCF, youll get DP if you forget to lift your middle finger.

I started using some fight pads with 6 face buttons. I place it on my right thigh and hold the left handle while placing my right hand fingers like you would with a fight stick. The two handles prevent the controller from slipping. It is kind of like a hybrid between a stick and a pad. I really like it but you might struggle to keep the right angle for your thumb to input directions at first.

I mainly play PC in general. I have a PS4 controller but ever since I had surgery on my thumb and my wrist it is not as flexible for movement. I do have a fight stick but, it just feels so uncomfortable using the stick because it just feels I have to put in so much movement which is something I am not used to. 360 controller user, I had PKSH on LB/LT/RT/RB before like a sadist, even if it did help massively as Test in Strive. now I have it as PKSH as XYBA, RB Burst LB Cancel RT Dust. significantly better feeling. 632146- inputs are mildly hell, 236236-/214214- is a headache on occasion, and sometimes I fuck up Hold OK inputs but that's entirely a timing issue and not the controller.

Imo keyboard/hitbox is the best controller if you're already used to WASD/space+ASD movement in other pc games. Transition is actually really easy once you get used to motion inputs which gets done in like 30 minutes at worst

Been a pad player for 20 + years. I like the 6 button controllers. Never had any issues playing any character. And pads are actually better than sticks due to the reaction time ability. However. Play whatever you want to play. Play whatever you are most comfortable with. I will agree that they do not last. It sucks. Overall, it is cheaper to buy a 300 dollar stick because it will last you a long time. A pad lasts me about 6 months at most. Sometimes only 2 months. Replacing a controller costs 50 to 150 ish bucks. Replacing stick parts is maybe 30 bucks. I need to try stick again. I am not a rich man lol.

Decided to pick up keyboard with SF6 because im a cheap ass and I can't afford a proper hitbox. I'm honestly pleaseantly surprised. Its kind of a nice switch from the arcade stick i've been using for years. Some shortcuts downright feel like cheating though like hold down and do double foward punch and you get a free dp for like 3 button press

I use the hori fight commander for ps5. I’ve played with a d pad since the 90s. The six button layout is pretty much a necessity for me. Arcade sticks are nice as well. Would love to learn a hitbox. But I’m pretty wired so I’m not ready to make the investment

@@nathanjansen5944 I do. I would say the dpad can be a little stiff, but I generally can get my inputs in no problem. I hate using triggers for any offense so having 6 buttons is great. Love playing killer instinct on pc with it as well.

One small question, how long does arcade stick/buttons only last? Because if they last much longer than pads. I might think about it more. On the same note about if they last long. Hows the maintenance? Easy to upgrade/swap broken parts?

I've had a fight stick with seimitsu buttons for 2 years now, give or take. Zero sign of wear. Made 2 leverless ones with sanwa and seimitsu respectively, again no sign of wear. As far as ease of repair, it can't be simpler, really. You open the case, unscrew or pop out the button, remove the 2 cables that hold it, put in another button, put the cable, done. The stick itself might be more complicated to repair but it's kinda built like a tank.

Buttons have a press limit but effectively they are good for years. Levers depend on what you get. Most of the time I replace levers once a year. Maintenance on sticks is pretty easy, a lot of sticks just open up with no tools required and you can swap parts as needed.

The customizability is part of the appeal for a lot of people, and parts are standardized enough that they're more or less always readily available. Some leverless in particular use standard hotswappable keyboard switches (I have cherry mx reds in mine). Pretty much any reasonable quality stick or leverless you buy you can maintain and use forever, the hardware you play the games on (console/PC/whatever) are going to wear out first.

okay here comes me: I play on pad. I play on the Nintendo Switch Pro Controller. I do not use the D-Pad. I use the Analog Stick. Would also use that on a PS4 Controller. Why? It feels best to me. D-Pad is too small for me and I just cannot input double quarter circles fast or precise enough. Half circles even harder. The only thing that might be easier are DP inputs. But yeah... I feel most comfortable with the stick. I can execute quarter circles fast in the corners of the stick. Half circles are... just doing a half circle on the stick. Now you may say that with the stick I can accidentally go too far upward and input a jump instead. Well... I dont. Not anymore. Learned very fast to just stay in the lower half of the input area and know how to stay in there.

Make your own, honestly. It's a PCB, a dozen buttons and a jlf stick. There are tons of videos online and written guides. I've personally built a stick and a leverless and both came out cheaper than some versions of ps4/ps5 pads. Alternatively you can try to find a mayflash f300 or qanba drone and upgrading the parts as you see fit.

If you're playing on PC, Mayflash F300 is a pretty reasonable stick at a good price. The Elite version comes with good buttons & stick for a bit more. ...but if you're gonna play on ps4/5 or head to tourneys where those are gonna be the setups, they need a pretty expensive dongle to work on those systems. The absolutely cheapest stick I can think of is the hori fighting stick mini, but it's tiny, very light (I prefer a nice and heavy stick), and the buttons & lever are poor quality.

I personally play on gamepad, but I don't use the pads, lol. I much prefer the analog stick. Call me a freak of nature, but growing up with my old dusty PS2, it's what works for me. Unless it's for movement in Tekken, then I do use the d-pad. But for general inputs and movement in most games, analog stick is what works for me. Never could get them consistently with the d-pads. Also hurts my thumb a lot.

I broke my RB (throw) on an xbox one controller in like 6 months of heavy use. Thought it was just me playing Sol and not a community wide issue lmao. Might get a Vitrix tbh because the new controller already feels like it’s taking damage fast.

Nah, this is pretty common. I love the current gen xbox pad since it has 1,3,7, and 9 inputs natively so it makes inputs like KBD's or just any sort of 8-way air dash really reliable to execute, but the shoulder buttons die on em pretty quick. I tend to go through a pad about every 3 months for the exact same issue 🤷‍♂

Hi LK, if possible, could you go into a step by step guide on how to succesfully disconnect/ unpair your PS5 controller after matches at tournaments? I was prettty embarassed at a CEOtaku event years ago where i was going to try out Grandblue when it first came out, and I couldnt get my controller to connect. I was in a large group of people and everyone turned to look half way accross the room to the kill la kill setup's ps4 menu being turned on and off cause i was playing it the day before. 😅 I'd like to have this social anxiety hurdle fixed so i can participate in SF6 locals. Doesn't even have to be a video, if you, or anyone kind enough could give me the run down on how to do it, that be greatly appreciated!

I got my stick when I was getting into Xrd 3 years ago. I am fully willing to admit I'm probably not the fastest on it, and I do make sloppy inputs and execution drops from time to time. But I like the tactical feedback of moving my wrist in motions and the statisfying clank my stick makes. Maybe I'd be better off with a leverless, but I don't want to relearn everything and I'd miss spinning the stick and churning butter. TL;DR: Play what you want, what feels best, and what you enjoy. It's better than throwing money for a set-up you aren't comfortable with.

Every controller is awesome. Pad is accessible, stick is intetutive, and hitbox is snappy, probably most optimal, but unless you are a high level player, it's probably not gonna matter. I got a snackbox a month ago I'm enjoying learning it, but I plan on using all 3 depending on the game.
