The best pig dog I've ever seen was a red/blue cattle dog with one front leg entirely missing, I shit you not, it would take on the biggest pigs by itself, the bigger the better, never ever getting hurt. Using a faster non-lugging dog to bale the pig, Red would come up under the front pig's legs from the side and lug up and its a bit hard to explain but used the pigs inside legs to support itself. By using this method it was safely tucked under the front legs away from the tusks.

If a young fella wants to learn you will sure teach him. A good dog is where you find him. If they can find a mentor that hunts the way they want to, then they will see the type of dog to get. Cause knowing what type of terrain you have available to hunt will help with your dog selection. Great stuff Clay great stuff.

And put in the work! i walked around in the bush catching fuck all for 2 years, ive got the same dogs now and they're not slayers but we catch pigs most hunts now, or if not catching they're at least chasing. only have gotten rid of one dog, had it from pup, was purpose bred for pig hunting, got rid of it at around 14 months old as i had put over 30 pigs into her and she just wasn't keen at all, destined to be a farm dog and is now herding sheep.

Best pig dog is the dog that wants to hunt. Over the short 10years of training/dog relationships I've learnt it's not what we want the dogs to do, its how we go about training each dog. Every dog takes differently to training and the way we interact with them. From pup is my preferred way to start but am happy to try dogs that others struggle with.

is it a smarter idea to buy dog after dog off the internet hoping that I get a good one or is it a better idea to buy two dogs breed then sell the ones that don't make the cut because I only have two by two and then I get however many dogs I only have to feed them and when they're old enough to see who makes the cut I can make a little bit of money off of those who don't
@ClayTallStories3 жыл бұрын
The best way is to first buy a pup from a proven hunting line. Then try and get an old retired dog that is stock proof. Hunt them both together once the pup is 6 months old or older if a large breed and the old dog will teach the pup. Good luck

Great video Clay. I have a dog starting training now. I am not a dogger but want to use this dog to help me hunt pigs in Aust. The dog is about 20 months old and until about two months ago, he was a complete idiot. Something clicked in that dogs head and now he is completely stock and roo proof and doesn't even look at native wildlife with any interest. The problem I have is that he's not real interested in pigs either. I have been able to get him excited about one pig in a trap so far, but don't have a pack to run him with. Do you have any advice on how to train a single dog without being educated by other already proven hunting dogs? Id be happy for him just to find and bail for me. Thanks.
@ClayTallStories4 жыл бұрын
If you don't have a good going dog to run him against then you have a lot of hard work to get him going. A pig in a pen is good for pups but ideally you need to connect up with another hunter with dogs. Find an online hunting forum and join up to connect with other local hunters. Good luck mate

Hey Clay, im starting to do a little solo stalking in Marlborough, just missed out on my first pig by being too slow loading my bow on the weekend. Thinking of getting a dog to help me out... do you think a staffie would be any good? mainly just to help me find them.
@ClayTallStories4 жыл бұрын
If you are wanting a indicating dog to shoot over then a visler or lab is good. If you want just a pig dog to swing off a pigs ear then staff's are great wee dogs.

You say you prefer Whippets to cross with for endurance, have you tried crossing with salukis or sloughis? I have seen videos of salukis running 10 kilometers or more in a hunt (admittedly across open desert, and that can make a difference). Nice vid.

We sell dogs at 3 yrs old mark usually because they are excess to requirement or don't meet our bench mark which is high(height and weight 40 - 50kgs etc) big dogs handle big pigs easier bigger bite bigger pull etc, but it's not the size of the dog it's the size of its heart!!! check out boars bails n brawls we are selling a dog named zee aka CRAZY 🤪 small dog big ♥ Nice dog run off our mains his parents, reason for sale is my boy is doing builder apprenticeship and size he's only 27kgs but he's a ball of muscle find bail hold like all our dogs, We don't sell dogs to anyone you talk about finding right dog we talk about finding right owner that deserves our dogs!! It's never hardly ever the dogs fault it's the owner that farks a dog lack of experience with training knowing and reading dogs is a must and yes some dogs work beta for others it's usually old owners fault not reading dog properly, we are always training young dogs every 6 mths our own breed, Finding the breed that suits your style of hunting is important!!

Reading all the comments of hunters and not hunters that are expressing their opinions ,I recomend to read about the dogo argentino. The only pure breed dog to hunt wild european boars and all the pigs in the world. They find, stop and kill if the hunters are to havy to arrived to the battle inmediatly!.They are hunters dogs, not catchers dogs or barking dogs like mostly dogs in videos.If you have to stop a 400 pounds wild european jabalí you Will need at least four 90 pounds dogo argentino dogs with experience in that kind of fights and a very fast hunter to help them in the battle.That the way we hunt european wild boars here in Argentina. Saludos from Patagonia Argentina.
