My betta is not quite so smart. He will only eat what's right in his face. He gets a tiny pinch of New Life Spectrum (small) in the mornings. This was recommended to me by a breeder. They are not his favorite, but they float the best of any I have tried, so are good to feed when I am busy. Plus they are very tiny and he was quite small when I got him and I was having to crush his food. At night he gets either Aqueon or Bio-gold (small) fed 1 at a time until he doesn't want anymore. I switch it up, but the Aqueon is definitely his favorite. I don't think it's the best nutritionally, though, so we mix it up. Sometimes he's not interested at all in dinner, so we skip it. He also has a variety of dried food as a treat, though he really only likes the Daphnia. These are good when you have company and they want to feed the fish. He will take them from the tweezers, so that's a fun trick. Thanks for demonstrating the frozen blood worms. I didn't realize you could refrigerate the extras for a day or two or I would have bought him some before now.

I like to put cubes frozen brine shrimp, daphnia, and blood worms inside a ziplock bag and hten mash them up with a rolling pin. I mix them all together as well as I can. My local pet store doesn't sell the sheets, so I just basically DIY the same product! this way it contains a mix of very protein-rich food and very fibrous food. I think I'll try to get some tubifex worms next time.

Some bettas don’t beg for food but they will still have a chance to eat it
@kidwolf00154 жыл бұрын
Unfortunately, it's part of thier biology. Bettas don't have any sort of instinct to tell them to stop eating. They will literally eat themselves to death if given the chance. They always feel hungry, unless they are very ill.

I know this is a 4 year old video but, another brand of insect food pellet that I found is Tropical Insect Menu. The pellets do sink eventually but they float quite a while imo. Also buy size S , as size XXS is too small, my betta doesn’t see and it now I have a ton of pellets i can’t use 😅

It's very similar with gouramis and paradise fish, the only difference being that food seems to be the sense of their lives, they are the very incarnation of gluttony. I keep both, and I am amazed by their appetite. The gourami seems like it could eat whatever I throw in the tank in any amounts. And the paradise fish once ate so much he couldn't dive and floated at the top like a balloon.

@kidwolf00154 жыл бұрын
The fake plants are a potential danger. If they are the plastic ones, get them out as soon as possible... The bettas can cut their fins up horribly on most of the plastic plants. The silky ones are usually much safer. Check all of your decorations, if they can cut a paper towel or pantyhose then they are too sharp. To test them, rub the paper towel or pantyhose on the decorations a few times over. Of course, remember to carefully rinse any tested objects with fresh, dechlornated water before putting them back in the tank.

I'm preping for what I consider to be my second betta fish. I've had some childhood bettas that my parents owned and took care of, but I consider them family fish. Unfortunately, my parents only put them in bowls... My first betta made it to a 5 gallon in about 2 months or so. She lived for almost 10 months with me. (She unfortunately had many health issues and had a lot of changes in her life. I didn't really have a choice.) Keep in mind, my sister bought her as a impulse gift for her 3 year old... The moment that I stopped her from put chlorinated water in the cube (I was the one who got tricked by the "self-cleaning" cube...) I realized that she wouldn't care for her properly. I did loads of research and slowly put the pieces together to give her a better life. We are basically guaranteed to make some awkward mistakes the first time around, but as long as we try our best to care for the voiceless and learn from our past experiences we can provide the best lives for everyone else involved. I'm glad that you're doing the research like I did. My little cholé probably wouldn't have been nearly as happy or lived for half that amount of time had I just let ignorance take over. Thank you for caring about them.

I feed my bettas a blend of different pellets everyday although none are considered betta pellets. The mix varies as I like to try new foods and will add new brands and take out older ones when their jars run out. Currently using New Life Spectrum Thera A (0.5 mm size), Omega One Color Mini Pellets, and Omega One Veggie Mini Pellets in a 2:1:0.5 ratio. (measured out with a small ice cream spoon) NLS is the base of the mix. It has good ingredients, a strong smell, doesn't really expand when soaked, and seems to do great with most of my fish although it does take a while for new ones to get used to it. When mixed with other pellets the whole batch takes on that smell which also makes them more likely to try new foods. OO Color is higher protein and Veggie is more for variety. I plan to swap them out for other stuff like Dr. Bassleer/Aquarium Munster, Xtreme Aquatic Foods and Northfin eventually. I use these tiny air tight containers from Dollar Tree. They come 10 in a pack in the kitchen area and are great for storing different foods for different tanks. I only put in enough food for 1 month and the rest of the jars/bags get double bagged and stored in the freezer until I need more. www.dollartree.com/sure-fresh-mini-storage-containers-with-lids-10ct-packs/206990 I have a pepper grinder for grinding everything for smaller fish. The spoons I feed with are for making nail polish swatches but they're easy for scooping small amounts of food and have a longer handle than an ice cream spoon. I got mine from aliexpress but they're also on amazon. www.amazon.com/LALANG-Display-Polish-Practice-Transparent/dp/B07V9FF2RS/ref=sr_1_23?keywords=nail+spoon+fan&qid=1571445759&sr=8-23 For live, they sometimes get microfex/dero worms (came in from some aquatic plants I ordered online) which are really easy to culture and basically impossible to get rid of if you have nothing to eat them. Just have some water, a little detritus/mulm from an established tank, maybe a live plant or two (I tossed in java fern plantlets) and a 2L soda bottle or plastic shoe box and you're good to go. You can tell if your water quality is bad because they will all come to the surface. Also raising scuds but I don't have a big enough population to want to feed them to my bettas yet. They should be raised separately from aquatic worm cultures as they will eat them but they can live with snails. Sometimes I feed the mini stick foods from ken's fish but those can be messy and work best with a big clean up crew. The multi worm sticks seem to be a hit with everything though. An adult betta can fit an entire stick in their mouth if they learn how to grab it from the end. My females always seem to pick up this trick much faster than the males and will swim away with the whole thing to keep anyone else from having it even if there's only snails with them. kensfish.com/collections/kens-sticks My set ups are all bare bottom with a lot of plants and an army of snails and copepods to handle anything uneaten.

Thank you, this video was very helpful! Its judt great that i found this video AFTER i spent 2 days straight trying to find some of these answers. Also, how do you know if youre not feeding your betta enough?
@kidwolf00154 жыл бұрын
They can become way more lethargic than normal. Sometimes, they will even hide more. I found that out after trying the fast for 3 to 4 day method to see if the swimbladder issue was from constipation. I don't recommend it... Just because your betta can handle fasting for up to two weeks doesn't mean that it makes for a pleasant experience for disabled fish. Also, I wouldn't recommend giving an insectivore peas, even as a laxative. Diaphina is an effective and much safer food-based laxative.
@kidwolf00154 жыл бұрын
They can also become underweight. If you can see an adult betta's ribs clearly, then he or she may be underweight. To be honest though, overfeeding is much easier to stumble upon.
@Teejrocks835 жыл бұрын
Much like human food, pet food "best by" dates are for the store's use not for the end consumer. As long as the seal is intact, don't be afraid to use or buy out of date food. As mentioned in the video, the food degradation starts once the container is open. Cool dry and dark storage once opened, and being careful not to get any moisture in the container I use them for about a year after opening before tossing them. If they smell stale, toss them sooner. Personally, I would not recommend storing any dry foods in the refrigerator unless you live in a very dry climate. Just bringing a container of food into a humid fish room for an hour and returning to the fridge could risk condensation forming on the inside of the container and rapidly spoiling your food. Best analogy would be me and my 7 year old daughter, my fish foods are moisture free and fresh smelling 6 month after opening. While her fish food feeding technique usually means wet fingers going in for a second pinch, rapidly deteriorating the food. Great vids! just subbed and kinda binge watching...

I've recently got a female and 6 ghost shrimp for a 30 gallon I've been cycling for almost a year. She is really young so can't eat them, plus she prefers to hide in the fake floating plants than in the hide or plants I have in the bottom. I'm going to get duckweed or another floating plant later. Just got the fakes so she can have somewhere to hide and sleep. Wasn't planning on getting a Betta, only shrimp and or snails. But I couldn't resist getting her. I feed her twice a day because of the shrimp. But I've also been keeping an eye on her, I don't want her to get a swim bladder infection. She isn't getting fat, just big. In three days she already looks less like a fry and more like a fish. She's my little melon princess because she's green and red. I'll probably get more ghostys last, not sure if I'll get any other tank mates other than shrimp and snails. I mostly wanted to get the tank for the aquatic plants, but I saw her and couldn't resist. The shrimp and snails are to help keep my plants healthy by eating the dead parts of my plants. So I don't think I'll get more fish other than them.

I didn't know you're supposed to feed them everyday. I live in Taiwan but I'm American and I have 7 bettas and the pet store first told me that I needed to feed them 4 to 5 pellets every two days. That could be why in the last year I only have two bettas that have lived for a year and their weight hasn't changed I'm going to try feeding them every day and I'll start off with three pallets with the rest on Sunday. I wonder why every pet store tells me that
@kidwolf00154 жыл бұрын
It's based off of how wild bettas eat in thier native habitats. From what I've read from breeders there, there is a much greater emphasis on treating bettas similarly to how they would live in the wild. There's just one major problem: domestic bettas splendens is so generically different from any wild species at this point. It's quite literally like comparing dogs to wolves...

From [unfortunate] experience, a betta can go for quite a while without eating. Mine was injured during shipping during a move and wouldn't eat. He made it about 3 weeks, having only eaten about a day's worth of food over that time (poor dude). Obviously, that isn't healthy; I'd never recommend starving a fish. But I'll probably try out the once-a-week fast, and not worry about feeding on a weekend trip.

Usually people feed their bettas commercial food and live and/or frozen food as a treat. I do that. With a twist :>

Betta fish are not beginner fish! They are so particular and definitely have emotion. They NEED plants and toys. My Betta has a black head fades to a white blue mix to a heavy blue body then to a lighter blue fin fading to a bright red. His name is rainbow. My son named him. He is picky. Gets sad really quick too. He has issues.

My Betta eats maybe two tiny pellets twice a day. I've tried flakes two other types of pellets. Even dried Blood Worms. Doesn't want to know about them. Just prefers this one particular pellet. Is that ok ? Any tips ?

Great question! I know many betta fish that are super picky. He should be okay, but you can keep offering other foods like frozen bloodworms, live foods, etc. Some people find that the only way they can get their fish to switch foods is to fast them for a few days and wait till they're hungry, so it's up to you if you want to try it.

So you can feed betta fish mosquito larvae? Live or what? We have Plenty of those in the summer...lol
@basolearnstoride35304 жыл бұрын
@@oliviachernutan370 Yup. And alive of course. Trust me, it's the bettas most favourite food. And the most interesting and fun too. Watching my betta chasing and hunting around the mosquito larvaes in my aquarium is really entertaining 😄

Mine won't eat at all. Tried every type of food there is, except live insects. He just spits it all out, or refuses it outright. Shrimp, bloodworms, tiny pellets, flakes...😢

Want ur betta strong and very aggressive. Make it condition with dry almond 7 days than take it out. Make him eat fresh blood worm (not dry )and exercise your fish by separate him into another jar and easy spinning the water 25 mins once a week. Find a big tank Make him chase female 5 mins every 3 to 5 days...make sure you can drink your fish water. Put live plants into his tank with dry banana leaf. If u do all this...your betta scale very hard and he very strong.
