Oats have the highest tryptophan content out of many grains. Tryptophan is a precursor to psilocybin. Does anyone know if the mushrooms can metabolize this to generate higher potency?
@MattRoadhouse3 жыл бұрын
Nice catch! I use Oats and a bit of RGS due to crazy inoc points. I did some experiments supplementing Selenium for substitution in synthesis too. Hard to bio-assay though :P

@Kev Oats do break up so easily. My #1 reason to use hull-on oats is that practically the entire surface area available for colonization has zero nutes. From a 2D perspective of bacteria and other contams, there is zero food. Mycelium can easily get in past the hull and eat the grain. Bacteria needs to grow its colony first to expand radially, and needs food to do that!
@rickw79032 жыл бұрын
Not sure about all of that but whole oats are the best as far as I know. That and brown rice. BR is about the same as rye.
@erkyderky2 жыл бұрын
The husks of oats are also nutritious for cubes. If bulk is what you want it is by far the best grain for several reasons

Wassup, Willy. I literally just formulated the needs of mushrooms and concocted this chunk of wisdom: Basidiomycetes, such as our chosen fungal species, endophytically extract polysaccharides from organic matter to create cells of chitin and glucans which are glucose-based. Thus, the substrate should be high in glucose which comes in four forms: 1) starch, 2) cellulose, 3) laminarin, and 4) beta-glucans. The sources of such glucans are, respectively, a. high starch, e.g.: potato, rice, wheat, and corn; b. high cellulose, e.g.: straw, wood, paper, and cotton; c. high laminarin, e.g.: brown algae aka kelp; d. high β-glucan, e.g.: rolled oats (oatmeal), oat bran, whole oat flour, oatrim (the soluble fraction of alpha-amylase hydrolyzed oat bran or whole oat flour), whole grain barley, and barley beta-fiber. Hope that helps. I spent days compiling this chunk of wisdom.
@h7opolo4 жыл бұрын
5:20, popcorn (corn) ✅ (just grind it up) - starch; 7:55, rye berries (wheat) ✅ (grind it) - starch; 12:25, birdseed (corn, millet, seeds) - starch, cellulose; Many more appropriate substrates are listed above. Try using a mix of each type of glucan.

@pacificbuds9774 жыл бұрын
Great vid and awesome overview of the spawn. Here is my experience with wbs and Millet: I started on wbs and now I have since moved to pure white millet. I get a 50lb bag locally for $29. What I like about millet over WBS is that it seems to be more durable in the long run because of the seed-like shell. WBS gets soft and eventually releases water as the weeks go on if your mycelium do not colonize it fast enough. Also a shake can cause the seeds to release water and mess up the whole jar. Since switching to white millet, I have pretty much solved this problem. I also like how easy it is to spot contam on white millet. The whole millet grain turns a different color and it makes it really easy to spot. So far I have seen Green and purple contam appear on millet. The other awesome thing I like about white Millet is that I put it in the blender and grind it down to a fine powder and then use it to make BRF or in this case MF (Millet Flour) jars. I noticed that my millet flour jars are colonizing faster than my BRF jars. This is a great second use for a 50lb bag of millet and a great bonus!

Rye is widely available across the US from grain/seed/feed supply stores. They're a choice grain for race horses and probably a lot of show animals. Some pet stores sell them too. If it's a big box product (where the bag isn't stitched for you) just make sure it's 100% rye. If you're in the northern hemisphere you can probably source these locally as they're grown from east to west, historically sold as a hartier, farmer friendly alternative to wheat. They definitely require an exact moisture level to avoid contamination caused by condensation or dryness. If you eat a plant based diet they make for a great staple grain too; boil them like you would beans and eat over rice. Very very good for you.

You need to steralize at 15psi for 45 min after boiling/soaking your grain spawn...make sure you have an self healing Injection port and you steralize the bag and needle with 70% isopropyl before inoculating your steralized grain bags or jars... not trying to be rude, but if you don't know to steralize your grains, inoculate using sterile techniques, or how to pasteurize your bulk substrate once your grain is full colonized, then you need to go study, a lot... otherwise you're going to have a lot of issues, potentially get mold spores everywhere that will fuck future grows, wasting a lot of time and money in the process. If you opened the grain in your prep area after it molded, you're gonna have a lot of issues in the future...

Popcorn rinsed three times with dawn soap... Starch is a killer if not countered in my experience. I happen to like there water absorption. Bird seed is so dirty full of sticks, sunflower seeds that float, too much prep.

. popcorn isnt the best , but is cheap. could you just buy popcorn and crack it yourself, to turn it into cracked corn? then just buy millet at the feed store?
