Just reading the comments, wanted to reiterate what has been said by so many. You guys did a fantastic job of explaining insulation, it's usage abilities. I enjoyed the way each of you stayed on task and complemented each other throughout the presentation of each of the options. I took notes and will still most likely watch them again. Thanks again Gentlemen for all your knowledge.

It was a very good video to explain the science of the different products: how each is made; how they need to be installed; what can cause them to be damaged; and their R factor. But missing (a great topic for a Part 3!) would be the questions I think the end user (and probably all of us have): for each product , it would cost this much for material, this much for labor (which could be hours for a 1000 sqft area), what the resultant R factor would be, and any pros or cons. As the host said towards the beginning (of part 1), there's a price point where the cost rises faster than the benefits. It would be nice to see that more quantitatively.

Excellent video. I learned more from these two parts than any other videos I’ve EVER watched. Thank you!

18:50 a few weeks later the defect was noticed. Is there a recommend time to wait before installing drywall after spraying? Here’s why I’m asking. If I’m homeowner and I have all my trades lined up for their part. I would have told my drywall trade to come in the next day after spraying. It’s a simple, honest, easily repairable defect that you were lucky to notice because the drywall wasn’t installed.

Great information on the types of insulation used in a house and it’s applications.

Great video, I'm retired now but have used cellulose since 1974. I fell as it's the best, I've sprayed in on new construction and many homes old construction. I love the "R" value of foam but not sure if I like it in a fire. Let's face it no fire is good, but what about installing prices? To me anyone who uses batts just don't understand insulation as you mentioned in your video very hard to get 100% of the cavity filled when using it around work box's, pipes etc. Just throwing numbers out there a home owner could insulate there home by them selves with batts and cost them ?? $1000. Hire me to spray cellulose and cost them ?? $3000. and hire a foam guy for ?? $7000. do you think that's about right? Of course the hirer the "R" value the better. And yes, watching your video I am still learning. Thank you.

Thank you guys for great information . Excellent job on making house energy efficient. I was wondering about the curing or outgasing of spray foam ? How long is that process to cure fully?
@jake.bruton.aarow.building10 ай бұрын
Most products are 8 to 24 hours. A poor mix will cause issues with that though.

Since you are using closed cell in majority of home, do you know how they will keep good air circulation and what hvac system will be used? Will a erv system be added. Curious as I'm in process of doing closed cell rafters and open cell walls here in TX. Found it interesting that you used closed cell blown right away before electrical and plumbing.

Great conversation! Funny to see those German windows on an American house. In Europe we call them Thermopane (ironic since it's a name of US origin). We love them for their insulating properties, which has more to do with their amazing air sealing gaskets than the double/triple glazing (which you can put on almost any window type), and for sound insulation. Many find them ugly however with the thick bevels and that white PVC look. I personally find sash windows as American as the American flag and would hate to see Thermopane take over the US... a few here and there for the energy conscious is fine but not more :))

The funny thing is folks never really comment on the windows except for the scale of the glass. We tend to use large windows.

Great video, so much info in just one clip Have a question... I am in naples florida and spray foam is becoming a very popular insulation for who ever wants to go that extra mile But my question is how to locate a roof leak which to pin point a leak is going to the attic to trace it on the sheathing, but in this case would be all cover with the sprayed foam Thank you
@jake.bruton.aarow.building3 ай бұрын
This is going to sound strange but, most roof leaks are easy to identify from the topside first. I know getting on the roof can be more difficult but a visual inspection can normally identify the issue easily from above. From below you don’t have much option. Good luck finding anything once covered by CCSF.

If you were to look for makimum insulation, could you take the 2x8 stud wall, do the 2 niches of closed cell foam then do blown in to fill the rest of the cavity? Or would there be a negative side effect?
@jake.bruton.aarow.building9 ай бұрын
Im not certain I understand your question but I believe you are describing exactly what we did. 2” of CCSP and then ~5” of blown-in-place cellulose.
@Soggstermainia9 ай бұрын
@jake.bruton.aarow.building I must have missed that snippet of information! Yes that is what I meant. I was curious if it could be done, which it can be as you say. It would be handy as it allows the electrical to be open, but still get the sealing and other benefits of spray foam. Thanks for the reply!

Do all builders use exterior insulation? Very impressed that you use spray insulation, the propane tanks, and then you use the fiberglass batt over it?
@jake.bruton.aarow.building Жыл бұрын
Exterior insulation is becoming more widely used everyday. Code is starting to require this as well.
@ph0t0ns4 ай бұрын
What tipped you off that there might be a problem, and how did you locate the problem areas, especially since they were on the hidden side of the foam?
@jake.bruton.aarow.building4 ай бұрын
In this instance the foam was pulling away from studs. That was a visual inspection thing. Otherwise an inspection with an IR camera on a day when there is a temperature difference between interior and exterior is the only other reliable method I have found.

Did you create a "diaper" by using closed cell spray foam (which is an air barrier) behind zip sheathing?
@jake.bruton.aarow.buildingАй бұрын
Good question. Because the CCSP is against the poly iso of the Zip-R they do not create a diaper affect between them because there isn’t any sort of mentionable cavity to have thing happen within. There is however drying potenial each direction from that space. Vapor open from poly iso to the outside and from the CCSP inward.

Yep you're right, the only difference in the "fireblock foam" is the color and the price.. its alot more $

Open cell has better sound proofing. Good for interior walls
@jake.bruton.aarow.building11 ай бұрын
I think most everyone would disagree. There is some sound benefit to open cell but for cost, mineral wool or wood fiber are substantially less money with better performance.

Looks like no conclusion. Yet it is simple: $/R. Thanks a lot Jake. Next time I would expect the mfg can say more, and somewhere I can find the spray foam source and detailed instructions - I used to know a bit long time ago, wondering any where in Bar area source. Also, don't emphasize too much on your local if you want the video to be globally helpful.
