I think what really makes the series work as it goes on, is that it feels a bit like a 00's comic adaptation, but for a comic series that doesn't exist. There's all these hints at a greater World and deeper Lore in the style of "easter eggs," but as each movie came out there was no established Canon for those things to refer to

My dad has always been a big action/kung fu movie buff. Loves anything Hong Kong, anything with Jason Statham, if it's got dudes fighting dudes, he's in. When the fourth JW movie was about to hit theaters, I was talking to my dad about how excited I was for it, and was shocked to hear he hadn't seen any of them. So I bought him the first 3 on DVD for his birthday, and then I talked to him again a couple weeks after that and he told me he watched all 3 of them, twice each in a span of about two weeks

4 is the best cause he actually died without completing his insane goal. You would think John Wick would go on to take on the top dogs but he died showing peace for a character who had nothing left but vengeance. It’s a better point than by dragging on with the series.

I love the John Wick series, but the first will always be the best. The action and choreography gets better and better in the sequels (especially JW4), but the major missing piece is the emotional component from the first film. John being tied up and pissed off, explaining what they took from him and how he’s gonna make them pay towards the end of the first film is a great scene. The sequels ramp up his “cool” factor and make him too emotionless and unaffected by what’s going on, which kind of removes the tension. Again, whole series is great, but Keanu’s performance in the first film outshines the others.

I'm steadfastly NOT a sequel guy. 9/10x's, I am usually deriding follow-up's, but JW2 is actually my favorite in the series, thus far. As you guys pointed out; it's THE film where a bunch of the lore is either introduced OR immensely expanded upon. JW is too simple, too staid; the sequel actually makes John Wick separate from every other anti-hero. Whether it's Frank Castle from The Punisher; Leon from Leon The Professional; John Crease from Man on Fire; and dozens more; JW2 showed the world why it deserves the attention it was getting. I hated the 3rd; and the 4th was completely forgettable

@jiijijjijiijiij3 ай бұрын
@@kingcaesar3693 But world building is not the same thing as telling a story. You can easily do one and not the other, and the sequels are an example of that.I was actually going to make that my comment before rewriting it, that all the sequels ring hollow because everything is in service of world building rather than a good story. It's like watching the Star Wars prequels but with added long shootout scenes.

Nah, I think 2 has a terrific story arc, arguably even better than 1 (not sure of this but it’s definitely close at least), with more peaks and valleys, and crazier, cooler action. The pacing of that movie is immaculate. My ranking is 2,1,4,3. 3 is the one with the weakest story by far. It’s still a good movie, but story is pretty forgettable.
@jiijijjijiijiij3 ай бұрын
@@chasethecolors I suppose unless it's a situation where we can agree which criteria we should judge them by, it's impossible to settle on a meaningful answer, and then that becomes its own philosophical ranking list mess. All I'd say is that for me the sequels are less compelling as contained stories because it feels like every single plot progression is a kind of deus ex machina style situation dressed up as world building. The plot is less personal to the protagonist even though he's still at the center of the story. I just know that whatever situation he happens to be in, just around the corner there will be a reveal of some unforeseen rule that takes the plot where it needs to go, and only maybe once in a while it will be because a character has had a personal development or a change in motivation or something like that. In that way to me it honestly feels like playing a tabletop game more than it feels like watching a movie.
