Thank you for all the research you do. You go through a pattern and find strengths and weaknesses so that we can choose our projects armed with all of the wisdom that you have acquired.❤ thank you for sharing. It helps me choose my battles.😆

That was the first ruler I ever bought! It was so surprising to me when the points matched up for the first time ever! Rulers that is! I have a fair few in my arsenal now, gradually building them up - onto blazing stars next!

There are a couple of easy work around to some of the problems you encountered. First, peaks or valleys... just decide on one and use that. Second, difficulty cutting the 45deg angle pieces... just use a different ruler, one with a well-positioned 45deg line. A big pro on the Moonkin (correct spelling) side was not mentioned: Free pattern. Entirely free.

Yes, I spelled it wrong. I am sorry. I thought I said free pattern.

@@theopinionatedquilterfree patterns are awesome. Plus the moonkin lady makes the same quilt using different sized precuts and using different fabrics. The pro for using the pre cut fabrics is that people love to gift them to us. If we don’t use them they collect dust. Dust that cause extra work and make me sick b

Love Deb and love Moonkin. I believe both ways have value. Depends on what the result you are trying to achieve and what/who it's for and how fast you need to be.

I don't advocate this method (love Deb Tucker) but I think if you measure the pre-cut first, you will be able to determine if you need to use the peaks or valleys when you cut. Hope that makes sense.

Amen to not being afraid to choose the best method for you and the project! Thanks for comparison!

Love the trees. I have that pattern and have yet to make it, but is moving up on my list. Hopefully 2024.

Thank you for a great analysis of the two methods with their pros and cons. I’ve not made a hunters star block as I loathe sewing on the bias. 😉 But I’m learning to appreciate bias sewing as a challenge and a skill to master. Have a great week, I’m looking forward to seeing you next Monday.

Boy did I have the same observations about the moonkin method… I just finished piecing the blocks after struggling to square up the blocks and hardly any blocks matched up right I just was like “well at least it’s done”

I always measure my 10 inch squares to see where the actual 10 inches is. In the peaks or the valleys. If it's in the valleys I'll go to the extra work to trim those peaks off. But you need to be very careful and not trim off too much. I know from experience. Better to cut your own squares.

I have done the moonkin type method using 2 colors(not layer cake) and did not find it to be problematic!

Good analysis, Maureen, and as you say, both methods have their good and not-so-good points. Those pinked edges are a pain, and precuts can trip you up (ask me how I know). I've learned to not trust what the manufacturer says about the size, and I always measure them and adjust from there.

Could you do an episode on how to get accurate points on a Double Wedding Ring quilt?
@carriehoman847610 ай бұрын
I just finished up a DWR project. It used a fusible interfacing from QuiltSmart. Some may see it as a "cheat", but the result is the same. Except for the stress. 😉

If you decide to go this route, I advise getting the cutting template to avoid using the paper template in the pattern.

Disappointed to hear that Cindi Edgerton's Tall Tree pattern is no longer available.
