tTank you. While I am a righty, I want lefties to be as comfortable as I am cutting.

I have mothers old June Taylor strip ruler. I use it often. Thanks for the cute PL quilts. I finished a top with scraps yesterday.

I do the math for each piece to figure out what will be the best use of the fabric. The other thing I do is sometimes cut a bit more- a 5” strip instead of a 4.5” strip if I need both 4.5” squares and 2.5” squares from the same strip. I end up with less scrap by sacrificing that .5” of fabric where I cut the 4.5” squares. For example I can get 4 4.5” squares and 18 2.5 inch squares from a 5” strip of fabric. Stripology XL is the bomb!

That is a great idea. Very good use of fabric.

I like to use this trick, too. Another benefit of cutting a large piece, then subcutting to your desired width strips is that you end up with lengthwise grain on your strips. I like the way they handle as you sew.

Yes, that is true. In fact, Judy Martin does that with all of her log cabins.

Congrats, Susan! Love my Stripology ruler too! Even changed from another set that wasn't as thick. Thanks for the tip on saving fabric from the ends!

Thanks Maureen! I’ve found I use my Stripology ruler more than my AccuQuilt! Much faster, no repositioning the fabric and less waste!

LOVE my XL Stripology ruler. I cut an entire quilt in less than an hour the other day. Five yards all cut into 4 x 7 1/2 inch pieces. I cut each yard into 7 1/2 pieces then turned them on their sides and stacked them overlapping and cut into the 4 inch pieces. Everything is perfect.

Would cutting fabric, either way, make a difference with regard to Warp or Weft of the pieces? One way would be stretchier than cutting Selvedge to Selvedge? Just curious! I do like having larger pieces after cutting...rather than littles!

Selvege-to-selvege has more stretch than the length of fabric cut. (S-to-S is the "normal" way we cut.) For squares, it doesn't matter. But, for rectangles and borders it does...

The reply below is correct. Some people like to cut the lengthwise way. It doesn't make enough difference to me because I starch my fabric and reduce the selvedge to selvedge stretch.

Would you ever cut your sashing and/or borders lengthwise to avoid having a seam?

I know ladies that do the very thing! Just curious about Warp and Weft and if the Stretch Factor is an issue?

Ever, yes. Often no. In my make your own striped fabric for the Easy striped Table Runner I do cut lengthwise.
