Beautiful collection of OTFs. Absolutely no idea why people make such a fuss over these knives. As someone with limited hand dexterity for almost a third of the year due to arthritis I find these knives become extremely helpful especially when it’s cold.

👍 Most flippers and bearing pivot folders are just as fast for one-handed opening. Luckily many states have moved to legalize automatics.
@Al-Gore-ithm Жыл бұрын
It's not alwaya about how fast they open. I agree w the original comment because I'm used to situations where I only have one hand free and in most cases it's not the opening of the knife I struggle with, it's the closing. And thats why, for me, OTFs are unique, usedul and practical. Knives are tools and our purposes for EDC differ greatly.

iPod..... 110% with you on why I'm looking into these. Where I live there are no knife shops within 150 miles in any direction. So I am getting my info from videos and that's it. I know or hear that even Microtech has the blade play and hardly any videos talk much about that. I'm trying to find which company/knife has the tightest lockup or I mean the most minimal play in the blade and I need it to be a single-sided edge. I can't seem to get much info on that. People say oh microtechs are the best and it doesn't affect performance. It matters to me though. Does anybody have any help in this area?

However there is often a reason for the price. For example my gen 3 combat troodon ran me $450 but I get the smoothest and easiest action on an otf due to its new internal redesign and it fires just as hard. Looking at the luminary and hawk deadlock you're spending larger money for a blade that doesn't have any play. Or you could get a kershaw livewire for a bit less and the blade looks thin, the action is stiff and wears at your thumb, the blade rattles loudly, what have you. It's okay to not buy they nicer, more expensive knife but it's obnoxious to complain about it and claim it isn't worth msrp when you haven't and may never handle it.
@poisonapple1515 күн бұрын
I've always wanted an OTF knife and 2 months ago I finally got one. But mine is from Raven Crest Tactical. Mine is a double action Titan Bravo with a Tanto serrated blade. I was looking to see if you show cased it in this video to see how it compared to others. But since it wasn't, I will say it is a very nice knife with a glass breaker on the cheaper end at $115 for mine. It does however have a break in period (that I didn't know at the time lol) where you just have to open and close it a bunch so it breaks in. Kind of like a gun. When you first get it it is very hard to open and close. After a day I put some gun oil in it and on the button where it slides against the frame. The slide on it looks like the Guardian Tactical Recon- 035 on the one I got btw. After that it did become easier to open but still had a way to go. It has a safety mechanism where if something blocks the blade from opening it disengages, and the blade becomes loose. To reengage the blade you just need to pull the blade out all the way and put it back on the spring/ mechanism inside. Then you can close it normally. It's nice so if you accidently hit yourself while it opens it won't lodge itself in you. It'll still poke you good and probably make you bleed a little, but it's better than it forcing itself in your hand or something. In its break in period it will go into safety mode by itself a lot because it thinks something blocked it from coming out when it was just a rough opening and didn't come out smoothly. It took about a good week for it to be nice opening and closing but still went into safety mode here and there. I'd say after 2- 3 weeks of opening and closing it a good amount that I didn't have any more hiccups and went into safety mode on its own. Only when I actually block it on purpose, just to make sure it's all in working order. It is very smooth opening, even my friends who have seen how hard it is to open at the beginning are surprised on how well it broke in. It is still safe though as the button isn't that loose where I think it'll open in my pocket. In the video he says that the Guardian Tactical Recon- 035 is the smoothest one there, I can't compare how smooth mine is to that one as I have never used one, but mine is still very smooth, after the break in period that is. I recommend it to people who want a good OTF knife that's not super expensive and doesn't mind a break in period. To be fair I don't know how many of them have a break in period, I just didn't know some do and figured some other people probably didn't know either, and it's better to know now then when you get it and are surprised you can't open it and close it easily at first. Like I was lol. Didn't mean to write such a long comment, sorry lol. Just wanted to add another knife option from personal use for people trying to decide which one they want from the cool list of knives in the video. 🙂

@Gpknives2 жыл бұрын
There are multiple safety features to prevent accidental deployment and reduce injury with your standard dual-action - the slide switch requires a moderate amount of force to deploy, and if the blade comes into contact with anything upon deployment, it will actually detach from the rails making it no longer under the spring tension. There are single-action automatics that are button-deployed which have a "safety" cover over the button, but usually, those are easily pushed aside and may actually be easier to accidentally deploy in the pocket.

Tyler sweet review. I dare say that I would have to agree with Random Eskimo about you missing the Hawk Deadlock OTF. But at the end of the day you want a knife that you can really use hard and takes a lickin. Thus another knife missing is the Microtech Combat Troodon. Shoot if it’s good enough for BatMan and a John Wick, it’s definitely the knife for me. And I’m sure you’ve seen the torchure test. The Dirac And The Dirac delta have the smoothest deployment of all Microtech’s. But my Combat Troodon in single edge clip point is my user favorite. I have to say the Gideon Tacticle OTF is interesting with the smooth action. I love to see someone go through a torchure test with these other brand blades like Ray of X-ring fame. My last thought on knives of any type is the blade coatings. I really don’t like DLC or cerakote etc coatings. If you are really using the knife they get scratched and that just doesn’t show on a stonewash or plane steel. And I love the patina that some blade steels develop. Rust has never been a problem because I take care of my tools.

OTF slide switches require a decent amount of force to operate and have a long travel distance before the knife is deployed. So while it is possible for the slide to potentially catch on something in the pocket, it is highly unlikely and completely uncommon for someone to pull with enough force for it to deploy on accident 👍

Hi Natalie! First of all, we highly recommend looking into the legality and any restrictions on knives in your area, as well as on campus. It is on a case-by-case basis, so there may be restrictions on blade length, opening mechanism, etc... For self-defense, we also highly recommend attending an in-person course if you can find one in your area. While automatic knives are fantastic for being concealed, in moments of panic they may be hard to deploy for the inexperienced, so you may be better off with a smaller fixed blade. Additionally, our #1 recommendation would be pepper spray/gel since you do not have to be as close to the assailant to use it, and there will likely be far fewer legal issues. We hope this helps!

If you want a smallish one I highly recommend the microtech exocet However for self defense I personally prefer something a little bigger as it can do more damage to the attacker So ide say go for the guardian tactical recon elite, plus it has very smooth deployment Lyn Thompson has a video explaining the benefits of carrying xl knives

OTFs are neat to own, fun to play with... But not worth what they cost Vs what they offer. Unless you're using it defensively (many more efficient ways to do that), there's no practical purpose for one, that isn't lapsed by a good folding knife.

@@fullfire0 I haven't used two hands to open a knife in 20 years ...out the front, spring assisted, automatic, or just an all around balanced blade with a thumb stud... @fullfire0 Жыл бұрын
@@joeytomato I'm not implying you use two hands for other knives, I'm saying the otf is much easier to use one handed. Maybe not on the open but certainly on the close. It's faster.
@joeytomato Жыл бұрын
@@fullfire0 ...and why would there be an urgency to close a knife? You're using a knife defensively, or for utility. If I need it defensively, I wouldn't be putting it up until the threat was over, and if I'm cutting a box open, there isn't much of a rush for either. The job had been completed, or the knife wouldn't be going back in my pocket. There are also many knives that can be closed, just as fast, that cost a 3rd as much. Any axis lock will just literally fall closed. Most liner or frame locks with the same movement of a thumb, will cause the blade to fold closed under its own weight. I don't care if anyone wants to spend their money on any knife, regardless of the price... But let's just call it what it is... "Wanting". Because when it comes to usefulness, the value, just isn't there. If you spend 300+ bucks on an OTF, you're literally doing it because you want to... Because it's "cool". Not because it's better. And that's fine... But don't try to tell folks you paid so much for a knife, for any other reason. On modern, "good" knives, opening with a thumb stud, takes no more effort than pushing a button or pushing a switch. The same can be said for folks who paid 5 and 600 bucks for regular old locking blades. It's about bragging, way more than ability.

So that you won't accidently deploy it at the wrong time. I don't want to trash your thumb strength.

@@wesleywarsmith1113 safety is important and I have others that work great. Thus is just unnecessary.

If you are having difficulties with operation you may want to contact Microtech for warranty support. Thanks for watching.

None. Even the best OTF knives can be problematic. With an OTS as long as the spring does not break I can service, sharpen and fix it myself.

My Gerber Propel OTS broke in under 50 opens, and their warranty program was a pain, customer service didn't care, chucked it into closet and went with Microtech. It's still going strong 5 years later

G&G Hawk has an OTF called the Dead Lock. A bit pricey, but they warranty everything and even put a video on KZbin showing how to take it apart and service it yourself. He encourages it. One of the best purchases I've made!

Thank you so much, and I am sure it will. I just moved to California and had to retire several of my EDC on account they were just a bit to long or to fast.
