Thank you so much for this video🥰 I’ve been having this problem I’ve noticed for about a month now where I get up to pee at night. I’ll be happily peeing away and then it seems about 1/2 to 3/4 of the way it stops. I’ll still feel a strong urgency but I’ll have to stand up and jiggle around a bit before I can sit back down to finish. And even then it still comes out in spurts. Also (so far) this only happens when I get up at night to pee. I’m 64 years old. I never knew about this residual remaining bit. This is very informative!

Tori, that was a great video. My body coach was helping me to relax pelvic floor for vaginismus and I started hyperfocusing which caused pain in my spine. It was helpful to hear how we should sit as I caused myself spinal pain from overthinking - I have hypermobility so my muscles easily tense.

Girl, I'm a chronic pelvic patient and also I'm a doctor, ironies of life that you understand perfectly... It's been 14 years of a not clear diagnosis (ic VS pudendal neuralgia or just voiding dysfunction). I've been treated with anything you can imagine. Even I have an interstim installed on s3. It's been hell, barely could do it through university and now I just can't work. My biggest biggest symptom is vesical tenesmus: it's a paradox cause every time I pee (struggle with the sensation of emptying, no pvr), at the veery moment my bladder is empty, I start feeling even more urgency and sometimes pain than before. So now everything is backwards! I take several meds and that lets me hold it for a very long time (12+ hours) to try to have a functional life. Cause every time since 14 years ago I pee, I can be seated there for 2 or 4 hours, I never know. At this point I don't think I have interstitial cytistis anymore. I don't respond to anything. Buuut I do have a pelvic dysfunction and everything there is soooo tight. Also I think I could have pudendal neuralgia, kind of atypical presentation, but I can feel the discomfort on my perineum and even clit... I just wanted to say your videos, the educational ones and those about your own recovery has been a great help for me. I quit trying to heal sometimes cause I'm sooooo tired that my life works around the cystitis/pelvic issues. But I see you, so positive, and you really got better... It's no the most common outcome. So you are kind of a source of inspiration. Please keep uploading material! Even as a doctor there are little details I don't manage, and your videos are super didactic!!! Greetings from Chile! Ps: if you do online sessions, could it be possible to schedule an hour in your agenda? Because in this country we are kind of behind in the physical therapy world, and it's insanely expensive. First and foremost, I am so, so sorry to learn of your 14-year history of "mysterious" pelvic pain. I hear you, deeply, when you say it's been hellish and that you sometimes simply stop trying to heal to give yourself a break - and while I'm inspired by the incredible strength you must've demonstrated to get through university, I'm so sorry that you cannot work now. I don't think providers and others realize how demanding and difficult incomplete emptying can be, amongst other forms of pelvic pain and dysfunction. What an honor to be a positive part of your healing through my content. I really do stand by everything that I've shared in my videos - I know there is such a thing as permanent damage, but I also think that bodies are much more capable of healing than we give them credit to be. You are a fantastic teacher with great insights. Would you please do a series on guys post prostatectomy where kegel exercises are not working to reduce stress incontinence? Perhaps there are core exercises or other things to without having surgery to get artificial devices inserted. This can be a desperate situation. Thank you.

I love this request, thank you so much for this idea. I think it'd be a helpful resource to do a series dedicated to prostatectomy recovery in general, I'm sure there are many guys who'd really benefit from having that information all in one place. I'll write it down, thank you again for the idea! It can be a desperate situation. I know our experiences are different, but I know from my own experiences how closely tied to sense of self the pelvis and it's healthy functioning can be, and I'm so, so sorry that you're struggling. It's tricky, because, while a lot of people benefit from pelvic floor strengthening post prostatectomy, other people's pelvic floors will tighten in response to the surgery (a form of tra*ma), and they need to lengthen the pelvic floor/regain full range of motion before they strengthen. It's also true that sometimes nerves can be injured during these kinds of surgeries (even in "nerve sparing" surgeries), and sometimes someone whose nerves are recovering will benefit from pelvic floor exercise through the lens of "waking the nerves back up," but continence won't return until the nerves are healed, which can take anywhere from 6 months to 2 years pending on the person/the injury/etc. Biofeedback can be helpful for "waking up the nerves" post surgery, as can estim. And your intuition about other deep core exercises is spot on, if it's a nerve thing activating synergists (the abdomen/other aspects of the deep core) can help "wake the nerves up" as well. It'd be worth having a conversation with a pelvic PT or a different provider that you trust about what they think the mechanism is causing your longer recovery, so that you can tailor interventions to your body. I'm sorry that I can't be more specific/helpful, and I really hope you get some clarity and continue to recover, even if it's slowly but surely. Don't give up. Bodies are amazing and they're capable of SO much healing. Yours is no exception 🧡

Wow this was great info! So very helpful.👍 Now I need to rewatch the video because I am guilty of doing it all wrong! 🚫I always hover at any public toilet. 🚫I do not relax when sitting on the toilet at home. 🚫I push the pee out with aggressive force(thought it may help strengthen pelvic core Because I have heard It’s suggested when doing kegels u start and stop the flow of urine)🤷♀️ And there’s probably some more stuff I do incorrectly I forgot to mention LOL thanks again so much‼️💯

I'm so glad this was helpful for you and that you were able to figure out where you can improve your habits! Yes, SO many people are told to practice Kegels by starting and stopping the flow of urine. I think that's a great cue, and I even encourage patients to try it a few times during actual urination, but I tell them ONLY a few times, not every day/every pee, because it can interfere with the pelvic floor-bladder relationship!

What if you can't lay your arms on your thighs? I have fibromyalgia, migraines and hypermobility syndrome and with it comes allodynia. My allodynia doesn't flare up all the time, but when it does it is very painful. Allodynia is stimuli that isn't normally painful, like bed sheets or clothes touching your skin, being extremely painful to the touch. I have it in the tops of my thighs a lot and when I do, I can't touch them because it hurts so badly. Thank you for the informative video. I have been having horrible back pain for days and I decided to look up posture on Google. Your video popped up. God Bless ❤️ 🙏

It's hard to give general advice for urinary incontinence because they are different types (stress, urge, functional, coital, combinations) and there are usually different underlying mechanisms causing each type (muscle length, lifestyle, anatomical changes, diet, etc., which can be different pending on the person). What I can say is that urinary incontinence is treatable! Have you considered seeing a pelvic PT? A good pelvic PT would be able to assess you, your unique body, and your lifestyle to help tailor interventions to your individual presentation! Yes! Meditation can be super helpful for some people! Digestion is a parasympathetic activity, and meditation does a great job and calming our sympathetic nervous system, which, in turn, lets our parasympathetic nervous system (sometimes called the "rest and digest" system) turn on and do its thing, which can be helpful with constipation sometimes 🧡

Women should pee sitting down, yes! Or at least in a position that allows them to relax their abdomen/inner thighs/gluts/pelvic floor/etc. It's about being supported enough in the position that you're in to let the muscles that should relax be able to relax!

Best: always use squatty-pot fixed on the floor .. this was the norm everywhere.. till a misguided fellow decided to "invent" the sitting pot hardly a century ago ..
