The same thing happened to us in the Rocky Mountains. We were in our “New” pop up VW Van. Loaded down with three adults and one small child. Just packed on the roof luggage carrier and in the van. We started up the first mountain and, oh Lord, it didn’t go!!!! Cars were lined up behind us. And of course your nerves are shot! My father who had an extremely short fuse, and was upset that my Mom bought the camper in the first place, was a joy to behold. Finally there was a truck pull off. So we pulled over and let the mile long line of traffic pass be for we started again. It was wash and repeat. Another line of traffic, backed up until we could pull over again. Needless to say, we never took the VW back to the mountains. 😅😅😅😅😅😅😅😅 It was flat camping after that trip . Many times, my cranky father stayed home! 😅😅😅😅😅 And we would go to lakes and have a great time!!! But, no more mountains.

We have been amazed how well the 1.5l engine of the little red camper has coped with most of the steep roads we have been up. Especially in Norway where we had no problems at all. The new van is a 2.2l engine so will have more power which will be good 🙂

Great to hear about your experiences in the caravan and van. Lots to learn from, thank you. Just saw your footage of Wellington. Funny to see it, because I live there😃 Glad you enjoyed NZ. I have an NV200, which I have had for two years, mostly because I was always carting stuff left, right and centre, and a car was impractical for me. And I said I would go camping in it. But to date I never have! So, I have just started to deck it out for camping this year! Your channel is very encouraging. Thank you.

Hi guys, we enjoyed your relaxed chat, inspiring stuff. Thanks for giving our channel a mention and mentioning our new van (the Nugget)...we are very excited about its arrival! We would love to take our girls for a ‘northern’ adventure throughout Scotland, the Faroes and up to Iceland....wow, what a great adventure for you towing a caravan! Another bucket list item for us is Scandinavia...we love road trips and the freedom of a campervan. As you mentioned, staying in hotels and being restricted by check out times/cleaners etc is not as much fun as taking your own space with you! And for us, we also usually require 2 hotel rooms which always presents issues. I must say, your NV200 has been marvellous and has served you well...a great go anywhere camper. 👍🏻😀

Thanks for watching. The ferry to Iceland doesn’t go from Scotland anymore which is a shame. I think it goes from Denmark so you could combine it with a Scandinavian tour. Something to think about for the future. We look forward to seeing you in the Nugget. Stay safe 👍😀

Well done another great video, it feels so lovely sitting and listening to you both in your lounge talking about your campervan experiences. One almost feels as though we all know you. Thank you for taking the time to put all those extra photographs in between the things that you were talking about. It must’ve taken a lot of time and effort to find those and slot them in at the appropriate moments . Also very interesting to hear your views about if you were ever to get another van and if you were, what it might be.I find it very interesting listening to everybody’s preferences with regards to what type of vans they want and what facilities they feel they cannot do without. These vary so greatly. I can see why you potentially still want a pop top, especially when wild camping when the car parks may have the barriers across. We went for a high hard top with a VW in the end from Bilbos with the reasoning that I would be doing a lot of camping on my own I wanted to feel safe at night. For some reason in my mind I thought someone could stab through the material with a knife which is a little bit ridiculous I think, but before you actually stay in a campervan and get used to things you don’t really know how you are going to be, for example whether you feel you really need a toilet or whether you don’t need to have a loo at all. I would say that with a hard hightop you get so much more storage, whether you have a bed up there or not and I am very glad that we did get one in the end, not just for that but in really bad weather where we have seen people with poptops having to put their roof down, we are fine in a storm even with the windows slightly vented. We also wanted to be able to drive away quickly without having to worry about putting a pop top down should we need to leave in the night urgently for whatever reason. This was when I would’ve been on my own in the van and felt most vulnerable.
@LifeistooshortCK4 жыл бұрын
Thank you Tina, you make some very valid points. It certainly is a personal decision on what type of van is going to suit a person. I can also see our priorities changing as the years progress. Have fun in your VW and stay safe 🙂

Just found your channel and really like like the relaxed speed of your explanations and road trips, this is really a recuperation from all of these better, quicker, more attempt that lots of other youtubers have. And, to be honest, I am a bit jealous about all the special van layouts you have in England. Here in Germany it seems there is only very very few different layouts that come in all kinds of flavours and price ranges, but in the end most of them are the more or less identical in the end. I was close to go to England to check the possibilities, but buying a right hand steering and taking it to central Europe would bring other problems over the long term, so I built by own Caddy Maxi single sleeper for short trips and have a "conventional" Fiat Ducato layout for longer trips with my wife, but I am still always impressed when I see english van layouts and how many different tastes they have. Thank you for your videos, stay healthy and have a good time.

Thanks so much for answering my questions ~ (am previous law enforcement, as well) We had a really similar experience with being put on stand-by at Heathrow (heading back to the US) and having to "sleep" there (late 1990's) and a police officer came up and asked us why we were sleeping in the airport (were trying to be as invisible as possible, lol) - he was actually very nice . I love the planning, too Carol. We drove & camped all over the UK for 6 weeks (got married on the Isle of Mull at Tobermory). It was such a lovely trip. Hoping to get back over next year & see more of the Continent & Ireland. Hoping to see Japan and New Zealand. There is an American company called Medline who ship supplies all over the US. It might be worth checking to see if they ship everywhere in the world. If they do, you could find a way to have it shipped to you and allow you to extend your travel. It is certainly an option in the US. We get supplies shipped to us routinely

Thanks for the info Rebecca. We have found a similar set up in the UK that will deliver medical supplies but to be honest I think 3 to 4 weeks is the ideal amount of time we would want to spend on each trip in such a small van so it shouldn’t be a problem 🙂

I'd definitely sell the Volvo car and buy the bigger camper with the toilet for the amount of travelling you guys do it would make a lot more sense than having an expensive car depreciating on the driveway!!
@LifeistooshortCK3 жыл бұрын
I understand the logic but we don’t want a bigger van and the limitations they bring on where we can camp. The Volvo doesn’t get used enough but it’s nice to have and Carol likes driving it. Me not so much.

Can you wild camp much in Iceland ? Was the ferry expensive ?
@LifeistooshortCK4 жыл бұрын
Not sure on the wild camping as we were in the caravan. Most of the campsites don’t take bookings, you just turn up and some of them did get very crowded by late evening. Some were very cheap, in Husavik we paid about £15 for one night and could have stayed for ten nights at no extra cost! I seem to remember the ferry was quite expensive but it was a long crossing. It no longer goes from Scrabster in Scotland, I think it goes from Denmark now.

Good afternoon from across the pond....When it comes to the size of campers and campervans it's important to note that the dealers and manufacturers are very generous in their estimates of how many people can sleep in a particular unit . If they advertise a unit as "sleeps 5" they neglect to mention that it will sleep 5 of your closest friends..
@LifeistooshortCK4 жыл бұрын
Haha, that’s a good point. The Nissan NV200 can sleep four but I would say only 2 adults and 2 small children at a push 😊

I didn't even know you had a Q&A video. Didn't see it in previous videos. Regarding getting a next van, I wouldn't rule out doing a conversion, then you can choose the van and if you don't fancy fitting it out yourself you could have it specced to exactly how you want it. It would definately save a lot of money from an off the shelf van. I'm talking about getting an independent van conversion company to do the work and not a large franchised dealership. I used to have a great urge to travel across the U.S.A. on a motorcycle, but that has diminished from my mind at the moment, maybe all this pandemic stuff or the divisive politics throughout the states. You couldn't pay me to go to Vegas Ken. Lol. :)) About the copyright music on the video, I don't see a problem with that. I have many videos with copyright music on them. Normally what KZbin does is flag up the video by sending you an email stating that they are aware about it, but normally you don't have to do anything as they now prefer to link viewers to Apple music download sites. If you credit the artists on the video and state that under the creative commons license you do not intend to make money from the video. What you have to make sure is that the video is not monetised. It used to be an automatic strike and after 3 or more you were closed down, but there were so many copyright videos on KZbin that they now prefer to make some money from the artist rather than penalising the uploader. I don't know what question I would have asked now. 😊👍
@LifeistooshortCK4 жыл бұрын
without doubt designing the layout and building it yourself would be the very best option but my skills are lacking in that department. Nothing to stop me designing the layout that would be ideal for us though. I could upload those videos I suppose and see what happens but I would not want to jeopardise the channel having poured so much time and effort into it. The other option would be to rework them. Have you got much use out of your van yet ?
@irishrover634 жыл бұрын
We have used the van, but not frequently due to the current situation. My daughter and her fiancé used it for 6 days back in October. I have recently fitted a diesel heater and keen to try it out soon. I can see it getting more use next year. 👍

It might be fun to check out Kara and Nate, a very popular KZbin channel by a 30-ish couple from Tennessee. They have travelled to 100 countries over the past four years (my favourite episodes are the ones about climbing to Everest base camp!), but in 2020 Covid has brought them back to the US, which they have been exploring in a converted Mercedes campervan which they bought secondhand. They have had multiple problems with it. It seems like every week or two, something breaks down. Their amateur wiring almost led to a fire.

Hello Ken and Carol all this info about the van very interesting i like the poptop rather than going with a high roof for me my thinking is length is better that height it would be nice not to have to make up the bed each day. I did a trip to NZ you are right its amazing love the driving there not much traffic on the roads, I have also done most of SE Asia but not India but its on my list, I winter in the Philippines thats a place i would really recommend you get a lot for your money , but this winter sad to say i will not be going because of the covid. Your trip Iceland sounded like a lovely trip its a place i would love to see going from Scotland on the ferry with the stop off i would like that , I have done Norway a couple of times, I hope you can get to do a trip there. I have a couple of Questions as you know i live in Canada have done for 40+ years have you done a trip to Canada I am living BC really worth a trip also Alberta, Question 2 I was born in Gloucestershire Between Newent and Ledbury this is a very beautiful part of England have you travelled around that part. Thanks for posting a great video I always enjoy having my morning coffee with the both of you. Take care stay safe .

Hi Shaun. Thanks for watching and your comments and questions. We are also thinking it would be nice to have a permanent bed for those afternoon naps and saves having to make up the bed every night. Sorry you can’t get out to the Philippines this winter, that it somewhere we have yet to explore. We would recommend a trip to Iceland but unfortunately the ferry doesn’t go from Scotland anymore, I think you have to go from Denmark now. Norway was top of our list and we had planned to go this summer until covid put paid to our travel plans 🙁 We have been to Canada a couple of times on self drive tours. The first was flying in and out of Toronto and travelling to Montreal, Quebec and Ottawa. The second was flying into Calgary and driving through the Rockies to Vancouver. We would love to go back and see more, the scenery is amazing. We have stayed at the Malvern Hills Caravan and Motorhome Club Site and visited Ledbury from there. What a lovely part of the country to live in, not only the Malvern Hills nearby but also the Wye Valley and Forest of Dean. Lots to explore in that area for our little camper 😀 Thank you so much for watching and stay safe 😊👍

your van is a British right-hand drive and Europe countries are left-hand drive, what would be your safety advise ?
@LifeistooshortCK4 жыл бұрын
We have driven quite a bit over there without any issues. The key thing is to have some visible reminder to drive on the other side of the road. We use a reversible sticker on the windscreen. The most dangerous time is pulling off first thing in the morning as its easy to forget. As for driving our van is small so I can get a good view of the road ahead by dropping back a bit and using road positioning. The passenger also has a role as they have the normal drivers view.
