My favourite detail on Heartsbane is that the center ridge on the handle forms an arrow, with the pommel resembling an arrow's fletching, with the cross guard taking the appearance of a bow. it makes it look like the sword is firing an arrow down the blade and is a great motif for a Huntsman noble family.

What don't really mention is that Hearts bane is HUGE. I would consider it almost a great sword than a longsword. Maybe a war sword. You called Anduril a longsword and Heartsbane is about 10 cm (4 inches) longer if I remember right.

I'm terribly surprised that you didn't include "Dawn" on this list, especially since you showed pictures of Ned's sword from his flashback which is where we see Dawn in the show. It would also be another cool example where you could've compared the show's version of the sword vs the book's interpretation. This was the only sword mentioned in the books that was just as good as Valyrian steel without being made from it as it was basically a meteorite sword.
@justinlast2lastharder749
@justinlast2lastharder749 6 ай бұрын
That "Dawn" was an entirely different version and we never see much of it. Instead of a Greatsword with a milky white blade, we just get a generic Longsword that we only see the hilt of...and the hilt is almost identical to the second sword he grabs from his hilt. Show Dawn was so disappointing it deserves to not be mentioned.

@@justinlast2lastharder749 what are you talking about? we see the swords in combat and a close up on the handel. I dislike that they changed the design so much but the swords in the show are very cool if you don't think of them as dawn. unquestionably a good design if you just forget about the books. They would probably give it a 10 out of 10 for practicality. I personally love the nob at the end, hate that they split it in 2 and that it isn't pale but it's a good design in isolation.

I say the design for Ice is on point for the Starks. It's very "no nonsence", but still has some interesting touches and fits with it being an executioner's sword inspired directly by museum pieces. A lot of the pictures don't show it but the pattern of the steel on it is beautiful and the more book accurate versions are just works of art while still being essentially the same as the show one.

You guys need a rubric with more criteria than just a flat 1-10 rating. Blade profile, blade weight, crossguard, handle, pommel, overall utility, and overall aesthetic could each be rated 1-5 and we'd get a much more accurate understanding.
@Lemon_Force

@Will_Forge
@Will_Forge 6 ай бұрын
Yeah, this would be a tremendous upgrade to the series, and gives you fodder for an extra video bringing past ratings up to the new standard. So win-win. You could then total the max value, and give them each an "x out of y" overall rating akin to the "out of 10" rating you've been giving except where y is whatever the max score would be. So n/5, n/5, n/5, n/5 would become n+n+n+n/20 as the overall ranking (as an example, though I imagine it'll be more than 20 and with more n values like OP listed above).
@jonhaynie1987
@jonhaynie1987 6 ай бұрын
That's the thought. Basic katana would not even be the same as a basic longsword just because they're "as good as it gets for what it is." An objective rubric would allow us to better understand the FUNDAMENTAL strengths and weaknesses of EACH sword.

In the show they are Khopesh, but in the books/connected art arakhs are supposed to be Scimitars. Even though " half sword, half scythe" is figurative for their cutting ability/usage. In my mind they have always been Falx/Rhomphaia, still one-handed, but with the long straight Rhomphaia-type blade with the strong curve just at the end and sharp on the inside of the curve. So they could use it like an actual scythe, mowing people like grass with the speed of the horse, sharpness of the blade, and hand strength doing the work against unarmored opponents.

I agree Longclaw design is basic, but narratively it makes sense. Bear pommel Longclaw was destroyed in the fire leaving only the valyrian steel blade undammaged. We don't really know what it looked like before but it makes sense for it to be made of basic stuff because it was putt together by what they had available at Castle Black, quickly and for as little cost. A crossguard made by a one armed blacksmith doing the best he could on short notice, some good black leather they had on hand for grip and a carved soap stone pommel for a little flare. Jon even comments in the book to himself that the pommel is inpractical but appreciates the work done just for him.

Your judgement of Ice was fair considering real life. For those that wonder about the fantasy elements, though, Ice was used as an executioner's sword by Ned's time, but originally it was forged in old Valeria where its original intended use was lost to time. That being said, old Valeria forged the Valerian steel blades for use by the dragon riders, likely being forged themselves by dragon's fire or with dragon's blood (like how the mother dragons cut themselves and bleed on their eggs to help them grow and hatch). So the question becomes why would a dragon rider want such a large sword? And I think the answer is more obvious than we're considering. When two dragons are fighting in mid-air there's no time for flair or finesse, so a massive sword potentially able to cut an enemy dragon's wing or leg, or be braced against the saddle to become a spike against an incoming head or claw would absolutely be valuable to a larger dragon rider who presents a larger target on the saddle. Ice was never meant to be used in ground combat or as an executioner's blade. Ice was a buster sword for fighting dragons on dragonback. Unbreakable on impact due to a wide valerian steel blade where lances and spears would lose their valerian steel heads to the wind or be left inside their targets as the wood would snap. The number of dragons alive back then would have necessitated weapons that could survive a storm of dragons performing clash after clash. Best not to run out of javelins or arrows or lose the head of your lances or spears.

Dark Sister is my favorite fantasy sword. It's elegantly designed, practical, perfectly weighted, and the fantasy lore factor behind it is awesome. I especially love the flared wing cross guard connecting to the dragon head in the middle and the dragon egg pommel. Overall the best fantasy sword IMO. 10/10

I always thought the idea of Oathkeeper and Widows Wail were that they were intended to be ceremonial swords for the Lannisters, especially with all the gold and red colours intergrated into them, they were made to show power, rather than functionality. And more importantly to them, to make up for the loss of Brightroar.

FYI Adam Savage on his Tested YT channel just had hands on with the original and aluminium prop versions of Dark Sister & BlackFire and OMG...11/10 they look incredible. loads of close up shots and chat around them.

Adam Savage just uploaded a video of him with the House of the Dragon props and we get a really good view of Jacaerys Velaryon’s sword out of its scabbard. Worth a watch for anyone who’s interested

You guys should do a tier list for the Warhammer Fantasy swords. I'd like to see you're take on some of those designs.

Hey, great video! I really like this series. I have an embarrassingly miniscule, nitpicky suggestion: I think if you lowered the contrast/saturation on the wooden graphic behind the swords, it would make them pop a lot more. For some reason, I find the crunchy multicolored wooden texture a little bothersome to the eye. Shutting up now.

I always gave Longclaw a pass for looking cheap because it once belonged to House Mormont, which is NOT a rich house but in reality, its totally because the show didn't know what they were doing but I don't know... Great video btw!

One sword I would have loved to have seen more of was Robert Baratheons sword in the scene when he arrives at Winterfell. It’s not Valyrian steel, but it looked really cool and was detailed as hell.

I don't knew this already or if some one else already pointed this out, but both Oathkeeper and Widows Wail's hilt etc etc, is made of "Lannistar Gold". Or at least so it is mentioned in the live action show.

I played Soul Calibur 6 for the first time recently and I'd honestly love to see you rate the weapons, because some of them are ridiculous anime weapons but some seem pretty "usable". Could be a fun tier list.

22:20 It's not just an aesthetic flare. Just like a wider blade is less likely to break or bend on a cut, the thickened portion also would be more capable of catching heavy blows down on the top without becoming bent down toward the handle. It can resist downward force in line with the blade where other handles are thiner in that direction.

This would be especially important if you stab at someone while on the back of a powerful mount like a horse or dragon. Should you miss or do a glancing blow the cross guard might strike the enemy or their mount, and being able to withstand more pressure is superior in this situation.

yall should have talked about each sword longer, Talked more about how they are (if they are) described in the books more and even design your own versions. That would be an interesting video. maybe even have your brother show up. Both of you could design your own versions.

I'd really really love you to review some The Elder Scrolls swords. Not the generic stuff, everyone knows Skyrim daedric swords are crap, but some artifact ones. There are a lot of interesting examples throughout the series. A lot of bizarre fantasy ones, but also some really good looking practical ones

One sword I would've liked to see you cover is Visaerys' sword from GoT, later also seen worn by Rhaegar. It's very rarely seen but it's a really cool single edged blade. Would like to hear your opinion on it. Surprised you didn't mention Daario's weird naked lady sword/dagger combo
