I've used soft PVC drawer liner for my tool chest, just in black. Bang for buck is good, no complaints. Nice experiment you did with different materials. This was very helpful for my next project.

Leather products have tannins and other oils that will corrode unprotected metal tools, That's why green felt or similar is used in traditional tool cases.

I used some 3mm red carpet material for mine, I repurposed several office drawer cabinets I got for free and the carpet was the best bang for buck as a liner, and provides good contrast.

Cris, in Brazil it’s quite easy to find that soft PVC foam mat, usually in semi-industrial rubber stores. It’s sold in rolls, and you can buy it pretty cheap by the meter, also in colors other than that parrot green, like matte black or gray. Another material I think could work for you is an anti-slip sticky mat, often used underneath loose rugs and mats to prevent slipping (though I'm not sure if that soft PVC drawer liner is the same thing). Absolutely love your shop!

Love every video in the catalog. I find it a little funny that wood itself may be as good as any surface. Padding and soft place to lay them is nice but wood is good too. I like leather inserts in drawers but this is a never-ending pursuit. Felt works for my uses too.

Something that comes to mind is rug underlay sheets. They can be either rubber, or fabric, and have a slightly tacky surface, not sticky, just tacky.

Haha! Sometimes you have problems that you don't really notice. So thank you for the video. I recently installed a drawer apothecary cabinet in my kitchen. I didn't line it with newspapers like my grandma used to do - but with kitchen roll. Not a really good idea. But I've somehow come to terms with the fact that things slide around. Now I have a solution, silly me.

Ooooo, I like this idea. I move around my stuff daily, so even something as open as gridfinity would just require too much spare parts to keep up with how I (poorly) organize. Thank you ^^. I absolutely need to look into potentially nicer drawer liners

Thanks for a very interesting video, Cris! I have used Ikea variera drawer mat (002.388.65) as protection and antislip in most of my drawers for the same reason as you and in all of my 27 (don't ask 🙄) kitchen drawers which is a grey polyethylene washable liner with a pattern of small nobs on top. It won't get a high rating in your "nice look" column 😂 but it is cheap at 3,50 Euros for a 150*50 cm roll which gets top rating in my "cheap" column.😅. And 0 points from the Gridfinity fanclub. Cya in the next video.

We use the thicker PVC stuff in our mechanic's carts. It is available in several colors from auto parts stores in the US, and I think we got some of it from the Snap-On truck, although that's clearly the most expensive way you can possibly buy it. The thicker stuff has a bit of a "memory foam" effect. If you lay out the tools neatly during your Friday cleanup, by Monday there will be a bit of an imprint in the foam. Sort of an outline to tell where things belong and to identify if anything is missing. The foam recovers after a few days if you remove the tool, so if you re-arrange, your new layout is "recorded" pretty quickly. Anyway, organization is always a fun topic, and always completely out of my ability to achieve!

Have you tried a peg board type design, make your own peg hole design you can add, subtract or move around for future tools. And as always this was a great video 😊

That pvc foam can be found as anti slip bathroom matt, i would like to add anti slip carpet underlays as well. But my concern, i am not that clean, how i can clean the drawers from wood dust. Felt and some of those options sound terrible for a nasty workshop. And for metalwork, how much oil do these materials soak, i need to do consider couple more requirements but you helped me cut the list at least in half. Thanks!

Interesting comparison between materials. I do feel that the sliding should have been tested on a surface with the slope increasing, so you would have concrete data (as in: the square started to slide at 6 degrees inclination). Also: billiard tables are not covered with the kind of felt you used in this video, but with a very high end material, wool based and processed to a very high finish. But that would be slippery, b/c you know - balls careening on it and such. That being said, I like that very cheap non-slid open weave materialfor drawrs and such that is very cheap and comes in awful colours beside somewhat acceptable black and gray.

I realize aesthetics is a big thing in your decision, but in my own tiny workshop I use mechanic's tool chests (the red/black all metal ones), to hold all of my tools and the grippy PVC drawer liners have been the best. All of my drawers have those liners in them and there area couple different types/styles. The ones with the cushiony open-cell kind of design seem to work the best, but even then I think my biggest problem is I still end up just chucking tools into most of them so they may not move around when I open and close the drawers, but I still end up hunting for the tool I need because I wasn't careful putting stuff away.

Is there a reason you only tested soft textiles? That just seems intuitively quite bad if you wanna reduce slipping of hard metal and plastic objects. The leather side of the desk mat would have easily been the best option. Silicone or rubber mats are great too. There's so many other specialized anti-slip materials to find as well. A typical application is kitchen drawers.

None. Just go with 100% Gridfinity. Will require a 3D printer though but gridfinity is bloody awesome.
@teymthebeastАй бұрын
agreed. gridfinity is the perfect solution in for me as well, but I would ad that it makes most sense when you have at least one 3D printer... want to design in 3d for some parts and accept the initial setup takes time with just one printer if you have lots of drawers etc.
@patrik512327 күн бұрын
@@teymthebeast Well yea, a 3D printer is required. I only mentioned it at all because those that make things for a living (i.e GHD for instance) are more and more likely to have one these days. They already have a CNC machine, a 3D printer isn't that far off. I think investment wise, it's actually cheaper.

Most of the drawer foams are WAY too expensive for what they are KAIZAN especially so - I found a company that makes the same foam, and sells it in sheets 4x the size of the average drawer for HALF the cost - so it's 8x cheaper. Old playroom mats - the ones that go together like jigsaws, they also work fine. I'm not spending £100 of drawer liners when my drawers didn't cost muchmore.
