When tiling, outside corners can be a problem. Knowing the right way to dress up the tile edges can really bring the best finished look to your tiling project.
We used Schluter edge strips to be the finished look and hide the unsightly cut tile edges. You can find them on Amazon:

To tile an outside corner, these edges are a small price to pay to get a professional tile job look. And depending on your color choice, they can really change the look of the entire tile project. you could just butt the 2 edges of tile next to each other but the look would not have the same quality that a finished tile edge provides. If you are going to the expense to have a tiled, bathroom, or tiled shower or even just tiling a niche, the tile work will look its best with a custom edge.
In this tiling of the shower, we had outside corners on the shower niche as well as the doorway into the small shower. We used a white PVC Schlueter edge that was beveled. Remember to check the depth of the tile and the edges to make sure they work well together. When choosing the Schluter edge, you want to make sure the thickness of the tile and thinset will be a similar height as the edging.

It would help if you could talk about the spacing and how far out you set that trim edge to allow for the glue and tile thickness

Just set a small piece of whatever type tile that you're installing and allow for your thins set it will be around 5/16, too 3/8, all together that you will need. and you can adjust tile with the amount of thin set you apply, or you can set tiles and before mortar dries install it where desired and mortar will hold it nicely

Great video, thanks again for your work and tips. Any advice on how a transition between a tiled and drywalled outside 90 deg corner should go? Tried looking on youtube, didn't see much.

Hey Bat….? See if you can find a Schluter edge that has an edge to overlap the drywall. Otherwise a thin wood piece of trim could do the trick. Thx for watching!

@joeny1980

I would just not do it. Make the drywall go around the corner, and then make your tile end just before the corner, maybe 1/4 inch set back, and use the Schuter end strips to cover the exposed end of tile.

Question. I have a tiled shower with a glass door frame attached on top of current tile. I am going to have the tile in the shower replaced BUT the metal frame of the glass door is sitting on top of the existing tile. So do I (a) cut out tile around metal frame and butt new tile up against old tile/frame OR (b) unscrew the glass door and retile with new tile underneath?

Hey Lori, Definitely take the door out and then tile the shower. It will be faster and look much cleaner. Thx for watching!

What tool did you use to cut the 45 miters on the Schluter PVC. My tin snips are gouging the cut, can't get true 45, not clean at all when you meet up the two pieces on an outside corner. Too flimsy for a saw, is there a technique for cutting w/ snips?

Hey LT, We used a Dewalt oscillation saw or “ Dremel. “ type tool. Generally work pretty well. Put Schluter on a board and cut down thru the PVC to the board. Thx for watching!

Your rondec profiles wasn’t thick enough… if you have a 9mm 3/8 tile then you need a 10mm profile strip bc the thinset under it… 2:49 also don’t have to screw em, just thin set them in 😁

Good video, but doesn't it cause a problem to screw through the Kerdi Board?
@Housebarons
@Housebarons 11 күн бұрын
Hey Mary, In our experience we are not to concerned. The screws are covered by thinset ( holding tile on wall) and while that material is very slightly permeable , any water that seeps through is minuscule. Plus the location only gets splashed water. We aren’t worried.

Man i have a question about this dang schluter trim i bought. Wrapped tile around a corner in my bathroom but put a rounded schluter trim vertical in the corner( same as in your video right). So now im trying to trim the top of those tile and when i come to that same corner theres just no way for me to cut that schluter so that the miters dont come together and create a pointed corner that sticks out beyond the rounded vertical strip below it. I tried to cut the schluter part way and bend it but it looks horrible. Im guessing they sell that corner piece but what i googled looks terrible from Home Depot. It looks bulky on that corner. Is there a trick?
@Housebarons

Hey James, When I bend Schiller, I cut a “v” in the back portion - the webbed part that is buried in the thin set. Then bend it. It has worked ok. Hope that helps. Thx for watching!

I am in over my head in a bathroom tile project. I have uneven edges on the outside corner of a window. Tile already applied to the wall, but not to the inside of the inset window. Can I hide my terrible mistakes with the schluter PVC edge material? I’m getting more and more upset by the moment. I hope I didn’t ruin my whole project. Help!!!
@Housebarons
@Housebarons Жыл бұрын
Hey abbyc.., There might be a few ways to approach this. 1) take off the offending tile and start again. I’ve done this before on more than one occasion. It happens. It can be pried off if you can get a screw driver or “easy-bar” under the tile. The tile may break. Just keep on pryingvtill all the pieces that need to be replaced are off. You can also break the tile with a hammer - the dried thinset can be scraped off or chiseled off - the sooner the better. (wear safety glasses ) Just try again. Not fun but … it’s an option. 2) Schluter might make an edge to help. You’d need to go to a tile store where they only do tile. They’d have best / varied choices. 3) you might be able to build a wood outside corner piece to make a trim to cover the uneven tile…? 4) you could use an angle grinder to cut the tile that is in place already. You’d need a blade designed to cut tile ( diamond impregnated ). If you could trim everything even, then apply your inside edge window tile and fill the space between them with grout. No Schluter needed. 5) you could apply wood trim to the inside edge of the window making the outside corner form a slight “L” shape to cover the uneven tile edge. Projects can throw you for a loop. Just take a little time off and think through the possible options. Good job trying to do this!!!! You can’t learn if you don’t try. Every project doesn’t turn out perfect, but you will get better the more you try. Just don’t give up! You can do it! Hope this helps. Thx for watching!

@Housebarons
@Housebarons Жыл бұрын
Hey Rob.., Like the corner trim, Schluter makes an edge end as well. Say you are doing a backsplash where the tile ends mid wall, they make an edge to cover the edge. Tile shops and big box homes stores carry it. Thx for watching!

How far out did you offset the trim to make both sides flush?
@Housebarons
@Housebarons 2 жыл бұрын
Hey Jonathan, The trims come in different heights. In the perfect scenerio, you want to get a trim the thickness of your thinset plus the tile. If it is less than that, then it will need a little thinset under it. But that will allow a bit of variation. You can find better trim selection at an actual tile store. Thx for watching.
