Great video. My two cents: after years of working with all of these brands, I can say with confidence that I use my polychromos for 90% of projects. It’s just more dynamic overall. Generally a ‘better’ pencil in almost all aspects (detail, longevity, coverage, blendability, adaptability, range of paper mediums that it works well on, consistency in mark making). As for the ‘intensity’ issue, I just find that the more pressure and more layers after allowing the pencils to set and rest gives you more opaque colours. You can always go more opaque (with poly) - it’s difficult to force an opaque pencil (like Derwent’s 2 brands and Luminance) to go transparent. As an addition to my polys, I occasionally use the whites from Derwent (lightfast and drawing) for different intensities of white when I’m drawing water, or if there is an intense specular highlight (but this is when I’m too lazy to set layers of poly - but to be clear, if I wanted to get the same intensity with poly - I totally can). But that’s about it. Polychromos for pretty much everything, and then the Derwent whites as add ons. I gave my luminance pencils away to students as I’m not a fan. But I do keep the purples, violets and magentas (5 pencils) I have from luminance, at hand - something about their specific intensity is difficult to beat. Especially for feathers and other majestic ‘details’.

Great to hear your praise of the Polychromos! They are the least pricey artist brand here in Germany, so they are my go-tos. What do you mean by "allowing the pencils to set and rest"?

@@denisehopkins7338 Thanks Denise. That does help. I was looking at the 10% and 50% Luminance colors last month when they were $2.11 per pencil. I've never seen you mention water-soluble wax/oil pastels (like Neocolor II, Crayola Portfolio, etc) which is another way to add opaque white and light highlights. They can be used directly like regular pastels, or painted on with a fine brush. Since the main binder is either wax, oil, or a mix of both, it should be archival over color pencils. (There's definitely plenty of binder left after activating them with water, because they *will not layer* beyond a certain point, unlike most water-based mediums.) I know you have your favorite Brush & Pencil products, but for folks in different countries who don't have access to this brand, alternatives are important.
@Lachri Жыл бұрын
That's interesting! The reason I don't recommend them is that I've not personally researched or used them so it's not something I would put my name on the line for. Thanks for sharing your experience with them :)
