Keep it as long as possible! Lol New cars average price is 40,000 and most are not as reliable because of the technology needed to increase the average miles per gallon (ie direct injection, high pressure fuel systems, turbos etc) 💯

Bought my 2008 exl accord at 121k and it was essentially a brand-new vehicle. I've driven it to 210k over 7 years of ownership. I gotta say, right around 175k to 200k several engine accessories needed replaced. I changed the starter, alternator, and timing chain assembly. I just recently had suspension bushings and a wheel hub replaced. Other people may have different experiences, I have driven mine like a bat outta hell, and spent 2 years in a cold northern state with harsh winters and road salt. I went from a 2003 chevy cavalier with a 5 speed, to this. It was like driving a supercar compared to what I was used to. Fun trivia fact, Honda has been a successful participant in F1 racing since 1964. They are a racing company that builds cars to stay afloat.

@@MJ100kin this video, you mention that the fuel pump is very reliable. I just bought a 2012 Accord with 120K miles. Because I don’t have a full maintenance history of this car, I did initial maintenace items to get it road worthy (spark plugs, oil/filter change, fuel system treatment, PCV valve, trans fluid, etc.) Should I also look at replacing the fuel filter as well? Your input would be most appreciated. Thx!
@MJ100k
@MJ100k 2 ай бұрын
@@carlovanrijk4039 online Automotive nerd research is indicating that for this vehicle- the fuel filter is part of the fuel pump. Which is in the fuel tank. Technically - you could just replace the filter. But, it’s probably unnecessary to replace unless you are having a problem with low fuel pressure. If I were you I’d do the following: Use quality gasoline, preferably “top tier” gasoline - it has extra detergents in it. Also, don’t run the vehicle (or any vehicle) low on fuel. This can damage the fuel pump. Refill your gasoline at 1/4 of a tank. I’ve seen these pumps/filters last a long time so it’s not something I’d worry about right now. At around 200,000 miles (or sooner if you’re paranoid lol) you can change the fuel pump and filter assembly, before it breaks. Use OEM parts. It’s an easy job because it’s under the back seat. Hope that helps 👍💯

@@MJ100k hey thanks for responding so quickly! The only reason I was inquiring about the fuel filter was because I didn’t know the history of the car’s maintenance, what kind of fuel they used or if they let it run down to zero miles before filling it again. @MJ100k
@MJ100k Жыл бұрын
What is their reasoning behind saying get 2013 and up ? I would avoid the 2013 and 2014 because it was the start of using direct injection and a cvt transmission. Many times when a new engine or transmission is introduced they have a few bugs to workout for the first couple years. 2008-2012 and 2015 or newer is what I would rather get myself if I had a choice. As far as your 2008…. Just make sure to have a mechanic check it out before you buy it (as with any car) Also if you can- check the car fax… sometimes they will list maintenance that the previous owner had done to the car. Ie oil changes, transmission flush etc. When buying a used car with alot of miles, you don’t just shop the car… you shop the previous owner 😉

@@bbeal2325 Yes, when I was working at Honda I do remember the rear brake pads wearing out sooner than expected on some early models. I believe there is a fix for it - so if you get the 2008 it’s probably been addressed already. Give your vin number to your local dealership to be sure. Also make sure to have your brake fluid flushed every couple of years (that’s for any car actually) As far as oil consumption I would just make sure to change the oil often and keep an eye on it. Also make sure your pcv valve is working. 99% of all cars have common problems. Including the 2013 -2014. They are known for oil consumption and other issues as well. You just gotta pick the ones with the problems you can easily deal with. Older cars you gotta really take care of them as far as maintenance and also don’t drive them hard. My Camry has 272,000 miles. I drive it nice and easy 👍

I agree with the author of this video 100%. It is a great reliable car. Those K24Z are great engines. Transmission is ok, I mean it is absolutely non sporty or I would even say slow, but it is reliable if you change fluid on time. And those who talk and complains about oil burn. Buy those used Accords where previous owners had heads on their shoulders and changed oils not more than 5k miles, and it will not burn oil even after 200K miles. In case it will, those burns will be minor and quite acceptable. In comparison with modern vehicles 2010-2012 are solid bulletproof vehicles! And it is also true that those Aisin transmission in Toyotas are better than Honda made ones. Well, take care about your transmissions. Drive gently. Accord is not a sports car so drive it accordingly and change your fluids on time

I can attest to this fact! I drive an ex-government 8th gen Honda Accord 2.4 (here is Malaysia it's rebadges as Proton Perdana, for VIP government officials). Bought it ridiculously cheap at 50k mileage. Now sailing to 200k. Drives like brand new! Only regular oil changes and services since then. And yeah, a busted front shaft at 190k service. Other than that, looks like it could easily go to the moon and back! It's comfortable, solid, spacious, superb gas mileage. Like you said, this is the time when Honda nailed it perfect. Later generations only add more complications and technology which does put a dent in Honda's reputation for reliability. I think for all automakers the sweet spot for reliable cars is between the late 90s and early 2000s where there is a fine balance between mechanical reliability and technology complexity.

The eighth generation, in my opinion, is the apex, top of the mountain as far as Accord styling goes. Larger, better proportions, much more classic styling than the Accords that came before it or after it. I personally like the interiors better in Gen 8 too. You're right----the interior space/room is fantastic. This is basically a full-sized car being sold as a mid-sized. I will say, I picked the V6. Got a decent deal on a beautiful EX-L V6 and had a dealer do the timing belt----even with that expense, still a good deal. It's a highway cruiser----maybe not up to the standard of my Lexus LS460 V8 on the turnpike----but the Accord is a sportier handling car, and you get that nice exhaust sound and some pleasing road noise that the Lexus insulates you from. I like a little "vroom" with my driving, LOL. Both the 4 and V6 in this generation are known to burn some oil----so you have to keep an eye on that. People say the cylinder deactivation in the V6 causes problems with the piston rings/other issues, hopefully improved by the 2011-2012 model year. Not an issue in all of them, and there are actually products on the market that you can install to make it run on 6 cylinders full time and stop the deactivation nonsense. Honda and other manufacturers moved to cylinder deactivation to try to comply with stupid government mandates for fleet fuel economy, but at the expense of reliability. With the 4 cylinders, not sure why there is sometimes excessive oil consumption, other than piston ring design not being up to usual Honda standards. All that said, these are still reliable engines/reliable, desirable cars and for styling, the best Honda Accords ever produced in my opinion. In 2024, you can find nice examples with about 100,000 miles, for $9500.00-$12,500.00. For that amount, you get Honda durability, great styling, strong performance, spacious interior volume and likely another 100,000+ miles of driving without a lot of drama. They are a strong value in my opinion, if you can find a good deal on one. Oh, and if you like coupes, don't sleep on the coupe. Great video by the way!

It's a great engine, and if I'm not mistaken, the coupe V6 might not have the cylinder deactivation, which makes it even better. These engines tend to do better running on six cylinders at all times instead of changing between 3-4-6 to save a little bit of gas. I bought a 2012 V6 sedan and after getting it home, my first trip was to a dealer to get a new timing belt, since there was no documentation that the original was ever replaced. You definitely want to do that or risk ruining the engine if it breaks. And once the new belt is on, you should be good for at least 7-10 years. Really nice cars. And among the 2008-2012 Accords, the 2012 V6 Coupe with stick shift is probably the most reliable one and will hold its value the best. Great choice.

So IDK what to tell you lol You could try an older K series engine Accord. But then it’s older… Or a newer 1.5 liter turbo engine but then you have to follow some stricter maintenance. I talk about how to take care of the 1.5 liter turbo engines in my What is the best year Honda CRV video if you wanna check that out. @MJ100k 10 ай бұрын
I would get a 2008 and above (4 cylinder Accord) over a 2002 Accord. The 2002 Accord 4 cylinder has a timing belt. Which needs to be changed because if it breaks you can destroy the engine. From 2003- 2007 model years the 4 cylinder Accord was a different body style than the 2008 and up …but it still had the k series engine which has a timing chain. Which is good. The chain didn’t have to be changed unless it breaks or stretches. That usually doesn’t happens as long as the owner changes the oil on time. When shopping used cars it’s best to find the find the year you want (which you are doing here) … and then when you find an actual vehicle… try and screen the previous owner… The previous owner’s maintenance habits are very important when searching for a good used car. Do you have the Carfax report? If yes, you can see if it’s listed on the maintenance records as being replaced. Or If your maintenance minder shows symbol B4 (this will be to the left of the oil life percentage) you should replace the timing belt. or at least every 60,000 miles if you drive in a very hot or very cold environment. This is according to the owners manual - page 309 techinfo.honda.com/rjanisis/pubs/OM/A51010/A51010OM.PDF Summary: If you don’t know that the timing belt has already been replaced … you should have it replaced now. Because if it breaks while you’re driving, you can trash the whole engine. If it were my car- I’d replace it now. While you’re in there replace the water pump, timing belt tensioner… and you might as well do the front main seal if you plan on keeping the car. Use all OEM parts. Hope that helps 👍

Whats the normal rpm shift range for an automatic I4? Also when stopped and it's in D it has a slight vibration. Is that something to worry about?
@MJ100k
@MJ100k Жыл бұрын
A slide vibration I drive at idle could be just a bad transmission or engine mount. Generally, most vehicles will shift around 2500-3000 rpm’s. But that can change based on how you are driving. If you’re on level ground and accelerating at a normal pace…. If you find the vehicle won’t shift gears until 3500-4000 rpm’s. That can be an indication of a transmission problem. You can try checking the fluid level.. and if the check engine light is on check for codes. Transmission issues can cause the check engine light to come on for transmission codes

In the owners manual - page 489 it says you have to change the transmission fluid when the maintenance minder indicator on the dash shows subcode#3 (replace transmission fluid) - only under extreme conditions: like driving in mountainous areas or towing a trailer: does the fluid have to be changed at 25,000 miles. So according to the manual - the vehicle calculates when the fluid should be changed. It should alert you with maintenance minder code 3 on the dash when it’s time. I’m not finding a specific mileage on when to change it in the manual. However changing it at 60,000 seems reasonable to me unless you are driving in mountain areas or towing trailers. Going forward- (if you drive it normally) - If I were you I’d change it again at 100,000 unless the maintenance minder code comes on. If the maintenance minder code 3 comes on, then change it at that time. Makes sure to have it changed with the OEM fluid, and reset the maintenance minder once it is changed. Here’s a link to the owners manual. techinfo.honda.com/rjanisis/pubs/OM/AH/A2A154DOM/enu/A2A154DOM.PDF

I will say, stay away from the early years (2008-2009) as those have been the models with VTC actuator issues. A definitive fix was never found for the 4 cylinder but other than that, definitely a solid choice!
@MJ100k
@MJ100k 3 ай бұрын
Automotive Nerd research indicates - there is a service bulletin for VTC actuator for 2008-2009 Accords. However; there are reports of this issue for other year Accords (and other Honda models) as well. Symptoms include a 2 second rattle at startup (seems to happen more in cold climates) As well as check engine light codes. Many people are saying that if you just hear the rattle … but don’t have any codes … then it’s not a big deal (a vehicle characteristic) If you - DO get codes from it - ie misfire codes etc.. then you can replace the actuator. Which is about a two hour job. Some people report even after the actuator is replaced - the noise may return in a couple years. One reported workaround to this annoying noise is - turn the key but don't start the car, wait a few seconds, turn it back off, then turn key the whole way to start the car. If you take it to a mechanic unfamiliar with this issue - the noise could be misdiagnosed as a bad timing chain.. So make sure the mechanic is aware of this issue.

If the previous owner took care of it. I would definitely want the four cylinder engine . The 2.4 liter engine with the timing chain is the one you want. Just make sure to have a mechanic check it out for you before you buy it. 2005 is getting kinda old, you want the mechanic to check for excessive rust.

@MJ100k
@MJ100k Жыл бұрын
It is my understanding that the 2.4 engine in the 2014 Accord is a direct injected 2.4 liter earth dreams engine - which is not the same type of fuel system as the 2.4 liter engine that I recommended in this video. I’m not sure if it’s the same engine block but the fuel system is much higher pressure and more complicated. Also direct injection engines can sometimes, in general, run into issues with carbon deposits. Also the 2014 has a cvt transmission.. which is a different transmission than the transmission in the years I recommended in this video. hondanews.com/en-US/honda-automobiles/releases/release-95eca0bb681b47f0a7e6c85311c0f401-2014-honda-accord-specifications-and-features I mean it’s not like the 2014 is a terrible car, but I would rather have the accord years that I mentioned. I think the previous generation Accord is better in terms of reliability, interior space and its easier to repair.

Also (unless you are a mechanic) make sure to have a mechanic look at the car before you buy it. Someone needs to get under the car to check for excessive rust, leaks and other issues.

Thanks for the video. I recently bought 2008 accord with 122k miles with automatic trans, 2.4l. Overall nice car from the first owner who took care of routine maintenance. After driving for a week, noticing that car has acceleration problem from a stop. RPM gets high before the car picks up speed. Its very annoying. I hope it’s not a trans problem. Any thoughts?

Sounds like it could be a transmission problem. You can check the fluid level and (if the check engine light is on) check for trouble codes. Transmission issues can turn on the check engine light… But I would recommend you take it to a mechanic for diagnosis.

Too funny. Just bought an '09 coupe, 4 cylinder a few days ago. 123k for 8500. Then this vid pops up. Everything things great but in gear, stopped, produces a vibration. It goes away in neutral, park and when I get going. Read it could he several things: Spark plugs Engine mounts Clogged fuel injectors Something else but I forget. Going with injector cleaner for the gas tank. Cheapest fix listed, not confident it will work but it's something recommended every 2k to 3k miles anyways so doing it. Anyone deal with this, and what solutions worked?

Ok.. Since you don’t have a check engine light… The problem is most likely not spark plugs or fuel injectors. The cars computer would likely sense a problem with either one of those and turn on the check engine light with a misfire or fuel trim code. I think it’s most likely an engine/ trans mount issue… or perhaps a transmission issue. Unless you know how to diagnose and change mounts… I’d take it to a good mechanic and tell him the problem. Ask for a diagnosis though… Don’t just request new mounts. Let them be on the hook for figuring out the problem. 👍

Thanks for the info. Question. My AC blows cold but not cold enough... the refrigerant is in the green zone, I tried to refill it using those kits. Any causes on why its not cold enough? Thank you
@MJ100k
@MJ100k Жыл бұрын
Makes sure it’s still on green now… It may have leaked out quickly as soon as you put it in…. Make sure your hvac filter (aka cabin air filter - is not super dirty) See if your fan comes on when you turn on the ac.. see if you ac compressor comes on when you turn on the ac. Make sure your condenser is not all clogged up with leaves/debris. If you still can’t figure it out you’ll have to take it to a mechanic. They have gauges that they put on the high and low side that will give them more info to figure out the problem. They’ll also use an ac machine to pull a vacuum on the system. If it holds vacuum there are no leaks. If there’s a leak they have to fix it. Then they’ll fill it up to spec and see if the ac gets as cold as it supposed to. Hope that helps 👍 Let us know what fixes it 💯

@@MJ100k thank you. Still a newbie in Honda. Wheres the condenser? The compressor comes on. Do I need to check if it has oil?
@MJ100k
@MJ100k Жыл бұрын
@@georgegeorge1873 The condenser on most vehicles is in between the front grill and the radiator. You’re probably not going to be able to check the oil in the ac system. They way it’s usually checked is when the mechanic hooks up the ac machine - it pulls out all the refrigerant and oil at the same time. So if the compressor is coming on and it’s not making a ton of noise -- there is most likely oil in the system.

Because the v6 has a timing belt. If the belt breaks it can cause major internal engine damage. Unless you can verify the belt was changed already… you should change the belt as soon as you buy a used v6…. Or you will risk the belt breaking and ruining the engine. That’s why I like the 4 cylinder. It has a timing chain.

It’s harder to be as bullet proof when things get a lot more complicated unfortunately. When direct injection and cvts entered the chat… things changed. But mpg is now way higher. So that’s good. I did find an accord 1.5 liter with over 600,000 miles though. You just HAVE to do proper maintenance and avoid a lot of short trips. There is less room for maintenance error with all OEMs newer generation engines. There are still people getting super high mileage… as customers we just have hold up our end as far as maintenance and driving habits. I did a - what is the best year CRV video- where I talk about maintenance habits / tips that will get you to high mileage. I also did a video on the Ford Edge and Toyota Rav 4. I recently found a 2020 Rav 4 hybrid with almost 500,000 miles! Original engine, hybrid battery and transmission. That one has an eCVT transmission. It’s way better than a CVT transmission because it has 2 electric motor generators instead of a band, so more durable than cvt.
