the fact that they had to say "please don't handle snakes during service" makes me feel there's something more to it....
@Zundfolge15 күн бұрын
There was a time when snake handling among Pentecostal, Holiness and other Charismatic churches was a fad. Then it started to fall out of favor (because people died) and there was a huge controversy in the 60s and 70s (IIRC) among Pentecostals whether the practice should continue. So a lot of them started putting this kind of thing in their documents to show clearly which side they came down on.

Mark 16:18-19 says: "These signs will accompany those who have believed: in My name they will cast out demons, they will speak with new tongues; *they will pick up serpents, and if they drink any deadly poison, it will not harm them*; they will lay hands on the sick, and they will recover." Some Pentecostals read this literalistically, and would handle snakes without getting harmed to prove their faith. They did see the other signs mentioned in Mark 16, so why not snake handling? Most Pentecostals did not think this was a good idea, and rightfully so. On a side note, many Bible commentaries believe the snake in Mark 16:18 is a reference to the episode described in Acts 28:1-6, where Paul is bitten by a snake but doesn't die.

I am wondering what the scriptural basis of substituting grape juice for wine in the Lord's Supper cup is. If I understand the Bible correctly, Jesus used wine so why would it be prohibited?

Wine only for the Eucharist; juice is not scriptural...
@TurtleMarcus15 күн бұрын
The question is rather: is alcohol content necessary for a grape juice drink to be considered "fruit of the vine" or "wine"? Or does Biblical norms accommodate for "wine" to be non-alcoholic or low-alcoholic? I think an honest case can be made for saying that alcohol is optional to the nature of the drink but the grape is essential, just as yeast is optional to the nature of the bread but the flour is essential (i.e. leavened or unleavened bread).

Wine is a mocker, strong drink is raging: and whosoever is deceived thereby is not wise.(Proverbs 20:1) Be not among winebibbers; among riotous eaters of flesh: for the drunkard and the glutton shall come to poverty: and drowsiness shall clothe a man with rags. (Proverbs 23:20-21) Woe unto them that rise up early in the morning, that they may follow strong drink; that continue until night, till wine inflame them! (Isaiah 5:11) Woe unto them that are mighty to drink wine, and men of strength to mingle strong drink. (Isaiah 5:22) And be not drunk with wine, wherein is excess; but be filled with the Spirit. (Ephesians 5:18)
@Zundfolge15 күн бұрын
Many of the churches that use grape juice were on the rise during a time where alcoholism was rampant (for example in the 18th Century, Methodists were gaining in popularity at a time when possibly as high as 80% of the British population were severe alcoholics). That's when the whole temperance movement really got started. This is why some denominations are "teetotalers". The feeling at the time is that alcohol does so much damage to society that not even a single drop of it was worth the risk. Now its become tradition and too many Christians treat tradition as dogma.

Can I ask you a serious question as a British person. This is not a jibe, an attack or me seeking any moral highground. Are there still churches within America, especially the deep south, that proactively practices segregation, either overtly or covertly? I'm not talking about churches based of the demographic of that particular community they are in either. I was talking to a Roman Catholic priest back in 2023 who acknowledged that racial segregation is still a thing in some, very few churches in America. If this is true, can you please tell me of which denominations do these churches belong to? Thank you.
@craigbenz483515 күн бұрын
There aren't any churches segregated by policy that I'm specifically aware of, but most ARE self-segregated.
@JRBWare194215 күн бұрын
I wouldn't be surprised if there are some, but you used the word "covert," and that's the key here--thus, I can't name you any.
@JohnnyRep-u4e15 күн бұрын
There are many reasons for segregation. My dad's parents went to a Polish speaking Catholic church, and many Lutheran churches in the area started out as Finnish, Swedish, etc, speaking. In this case, immigrants gathered together. There are still Korean speaking Presbyterian and Baptist congregations. I'd say the biggest segregator, now, is the demographics of where you live. There are denominations that are "historically black", mostly concentrated in the South: The African Methodist Episcopal Church, and African Methodist Episcopal Zion Church, as well as several Baptist denominations. The Largest Pentecostal denomination in the United States is also "historically black": The Church of God in Christ. Most whites in these denominations tend to be in inter-racial relationships.

I grew up in and live in Kentucky (upper south) and from my experience there is definitely a little self segregation, but I have never seen a church that actively segregates or would turn someone away because of their color. The area I'm from is maybe 75% white, so most churches were majority white, but most I'd been to had black, hispanic, or Asian members. There were a few historic black churches in town which were still majority black. We had a few churches that held spanish services, so those were obviously majority recent hispanic immigrants. Generally active church goers are some of the least racially intolerant people around. Most of the (few) racist folks I've known have been non church going nominal Christians that treat "christian" like a social identifier instead of a way of life.

@@Zundfolge Specifically, the IRS requires being "organized" under state law. A few states (like Texas) have laws that allow do-it-yourself organization of nonprofits, without incorporation or any papers filed, and still be able to own property, have limited liability, and apply to the IRS for 501(c)(3) tax exemption. (I'm secretary of an unincorporated Texas nonprofit organization with all of that.) In most states, incorporation is necessary for property ownership. A few states have laws allowing bishops of hierarchical denominations to serve as "corporations sole" (corporations of one) to hold diocese property.

@@MikeV8652 The idea for all churches to be incorporated was the brainchild of Lyndon Johnson in the 1950's, when he was a senator. He didn't like the fact that preachers said not to vote for him because he was an adulterer. Therefore, he came up with the idea that all churches needed to be 501(c)(3) corporations, selling the idea that it would protect the tax-exempt status of churches-as if that status was being threatened. Johnson realized that corporations are creations of the state-therefore, the state can control them. The move was really to silence churches from weighing in on political matters-despite the fact that that was an American tradition going back to the 1600’s. So who do you believe is the head of the church-the state or God?

How is it possible to have so many different denominations?
@inwyrdn369115 күн бұрын
If you read the Bible without the inherent concepts people have injected, you learn something interesting - there is no true boundary, no dividing line between what is and is not acceptable. Mystery religions from Greece, Rome, etc had these barriers - cross this line, you're out. Follow these standards and be accepted, you're in. Christianity and Islam do not have these, leading to no fundamental way to say this person is or this person is not a member. There are no wrong denominations, because every group can find a basis for their beliefs, and no group can find an actual hard and fast "No" for anything.

Where in the Bible is the sinner's prayer? As someone who was raised in a IFB church, the sinner's prayer was called fire insurance, in case you feel like you did not get saved when you prayed it the first 5 times. My sister prayed it many times; however, she denies Christ. as she converted to Judaism. No, she was not saved and then lost it. The Holy Spirit moving in one's heart is the only way one can be saved due to man's inherent depravity. A lost person cannot just say "I will get saved today". New question you don't hear much: Many Christians believe one must be perfectly righteous to go to heaven which is why only Jesus' own righteousness, in their view, will suffice to allow one to have eternal bliss. But if true, then only perfect wickedness should cause one to inherit *eternal* punishment. The punishment should fit the crime, just like the reward does. But how many people are perfectly wicked? That's almost as hard as being perfectly good! Like, you never once did anybody a favor, or said a kind word, or petted a dog?
@MikeV865214 күн бұрын
Salvation cannot be earned through good works. All have sinned and come short. He who keeps the whole law but stumbles on one point is guilty of all. Our righteousness is as filthy rags. Only Jesus can save us by his grace through our faith. No one comes to the Father except through Him. After that, good works will follow. These statements are all based on scriptures.
@KingoftheJuice1814 күн бұрын
@@MikeV8652 Those statements don't really answer my question: If you can only be rewarded eternally by being perfectly righteous (and you say this is through Jesus), then it follows that you can only be punished eternally if you are perfectly wicked. Otherwise, God would be unjust. Because you can't be saying that everyone is completely and equally wicked regardless of how they lived their life. You can't be claiming that what we do doesn't matter in any way. I know you don't believe that because you say there are good works that matter (not to mention all those teachings by Jesus that talk about pursuing righteousness and those who inherit the kingdom of God are people who DO the will of his Father, who take care of the least of God's children, etc.).
