Third year landscape architecture student here. I just got a job in a firm and I will say that the type of work we do is much different than what I do at school. In school, much more emphasis is placed on master planning and conceptual graphics, whereas at my job we focus mainly on working drawings or construction documentation. Many students are completely overwhelmed upon entering a firm after completing landscape architecture school. I wish school was more representative of the actual profession.

Be patient. You will see the value of your education throughout your career. School cannot predict every aspect of the field you end up working in, but it certainly can provide fundamentals that will help you. Every firm is different and do things in different ways. Many people think school will provide a direct and singular answer to questions in the real world such as a math problem in which 1+1 = 2 no matter where you go. It's far from that, especially in the early stages.

Do you know of any master's degree which provides you 100% of field work after bachelors in architecture? Closely related to nature and animals?

@@sensei_poo still in the design and construction field? you could check out a Masters of Natural Resources (MNR). It’s not a design field but deals heavily in the management of natural and cultural resources.

Don't stress too hard. Making a big life choice should never be done from a place of stress - stress inhibits our ability to grow into ourselves naturally. You're young! You could try playing around with some things, for example if you think you might be interested in landscape architecture, why not get a job for a little while as a landscaper? To get some hands on knowledge in the field. Or a landscape design short course. Maybe see if you can find a patch of land somewhere (your backyard) and learn a few things online and make a design for a backyard makeover or a garden. That way you're not getting into a huge amount of debt at a young age for something that might not be right for you. Play with it for a while, experiment to find out what your strengths and interests are - it's ridiculous how much pressure is put onto young people to 'figure out' what they need to do so young. Don't be hard on yourself.

I would definitely recommend both as a double degree. But as a landscape architect who has worked in practice, sole practice and academia, I would most definitely recommend students veer towards architecture. Architecture is valued by the market far far more sadly, and that parlays into fees, professional respect, and a general sense that an architect is far more specialised and valuable. And that goes for architects from the top briefs type through to the suburban type, whereas outside the rock-star group of LAs, and the guns that clearly above the pack (few and far between), landscape design (civic) is seen as something anyone can do. (It’s not, but I’m talking about public and client perspective) An architect ‘doing’ external space design has far more respect… thus the recommendation for double degree, or even as an architect doing additional studies

I am following a landscape design course and we use Vectorworks Landmark to make digital designs with, beside making manual drawings on paper. The main drawback is that it is not even sure if I ever going to use this software as a small independent designer/gardener after the study, because of the high price (lifetime licenses will not be even issued anymore from 1-1-'24 onwards). Can you tell a bit more in a future video about which software to use?

I have a degree in Civil Engineering, I'm curious if you think I could change career paths fluidly? I understand that if I wanted an Architect title I'd need to go through a masters program and follow through with all the certifications and apprenticeships you mentioned. But I am hoping I could transition to a designer position without having to start as entry level. I do have an extensive knowledge of horticulture as well as land grading.

How do you open the opportunity for an internship, where you have the ability to work alongside a landscape architect, or designer, as an assistant to them, in order to get hands on experience and training?? I am a horticulture student in my final semester looking to get some hands on experience before I go forward with my bachelors in the future. I can't afford the tuition and time for the bachelors right now, maybe in the next 2 years I will. Thanks!!

Would a Bachelor's in Horticulture be a good pathway to becoming a Landscape Designer? ...
@Ronaldo-wt2oy
@Ronaldo-wt2oy 2 жыл бұрын
I graduated with a Bachelors in Horticulture based on design principles. Is divided in two paths the Horticulture or Design. Main difference been your 400 and some 300 classes. This answers your question basically if the school has a designer path do it. Learned all plants, soils, and science related to the field. Learned Autocad, Photoshop, Illustrator, Site engineering, sustainable practices and thought myself 3D rendering to basically beat my peers in some projects. Made a capstone project at the end. I could go on two years for my Masters in Landscape Architecture but instead will go for a Masters of Sustainability in the Urban Environment at the City College of New York. Reason been want to land a job working for the Government instead of a firm. Any more questions just ask away.

Our company offers landscape designs that use LiDAR and GIS drones that scan sites down to 4 cm accuracy - all without a degree. Our process takes one-third of the time and costs. We have the surveyed geomatics in our systems that meet local laws and requirements which allow for quicker results and lower costs. We have worked in Orange County and many other municipalities in Canada and the USA. We are a tech broker just getting started with anything smart for homes and businesses. We have team members with over 20 years in tech and geomatics. Projects are stamped and approved 99.9% of the time.

Great information. HOWEVER, It was such an extensive amount of new information, (As I would imagine it was for many.) delivered while ‘speed talking.’” Almost one continuous sentence- very fast pace and delivered almost like a stream of consciousness, without pause. It was like watching someone in a speed talking contest. Sadly, it quickly became to tedious to watch since I was actually watching it to learn something and having to repeatedly back up the video to be able to taken in all the information, (Schooling, certifications, internships, designations, etc.) quickly became tiresome. I would have preferred a slower delivery and longer video. Maybe next time!?!
