Thanks for uploading ur video on this topic. Nicely explained! Sir, can we also say that literary criticism is a post-processing phenomenon. That is we read a text as a whole and reach to it's interpretation after reading it. On the other hand when we approach a work from any theoretical perspective we take a theory-informed position before we start reading a text.
@masoodraja
@masoodraja 2 жыл бұрын
Thank you. You can say anything about a reading process and interpretation as long as it makes sense. It will depend upon which explanation of cognition etc you bring to the act of reading.

Literary criticism is usually detached from theory in writing classes. Rarely is an author aware of or in command of the multitude of theories that may inform or decode his or her text out of its context. It is still very much a useful tool and one which, chronologically in the process of education and learning, necessarily precedes the introduction to and adoption of the use of theory for the purpose of expanding upon the myriad influences and, intentionally or otherwise, the resulting impacts upon the reader contained within the work.

Yes, but an author is also discursively produced and whether or not he or she likes it, they are determined and articulated by some theory.

Sir, you have clarified a lot of ambiguities through this short lecture. I sometimes wonder where would the dominance of theory in literary research lead in the coming centuries. Research in the lesser projected literature like the regional works of literature of Pakistan still does not depend upon critical theories which is one of the main reasons behind the international critics' overlooking of these texts.
@masoodraja
@masoodraja 3 жыл бұрын
Thank you. I think the Pakistani regional texts are neglected not because of lack of theory but because of less interest by Pakistani scholars. If Pakistani scholars develop good articles and books about these works, then these works will garner international attention.

Sir , You have explained that 'literary theory' is a body of ideas, theories and concepts that a reader uses to approach a text. And 'literary criticism' involves an act of interpretation without taking theory or idea into an account. But Sir, how can we analyze, deduce a meaning of a text without taking into an account certain ideological underpinnings. I believe it is impossible to explain meaning and interpret a text without considering ideological underpinnings because consciously or unconsciously the socio-cultural milieu and psychological aspects intervene.
@masoodraja
@masoodraja 3 жыл бұрын
Yes, I agree. Everything pretty much has a theory. The point is that those doing criticism assume a stance where they do not mention any theory on dealing with the text.
@linguisticsliteraturewithimran
@linguisticsliteraturewithimran Жыл бұрын
Well, I think literary criticism deals with the interpretation of text while keeping in mind the author's intention. Moreover, the history and political context are kept in mind while interpreting the text. For example, when we analyse Othelo we also study what was the political, social and historical context in which Shakespeare wrote Othelo. We also study what were the intentions of the author when producing the text. In Literary theory we focus on the text. We analyse the text with particular lenses . For example, feminism, Constructionism, Marxism etc. We avoid the social and political background in which a work is produced. We have a particular idea in mind and analyse the text within that theory of frame. We don't keep in mind the author. So lottery criticism.is to evaluate a text to see its marits and flaws. We see the worth of a text through its meaning while literary theory analyses a text from a particular perspective.

Thank you. There is no differences. The approaches are theoretical methods to study literature. So, New Criticism is one approach and deconstruction could be called another.
