Hi Charlie, this is incredibly useful information, thank you so much for sharing your knowledge with the world! I used the information in this video to finish (drill the note holes) up the 3/4inch PVC flute I was building with my kids. Some note holes work, but some don’t, almost as if too much air is escaping and it cannot build up that resonant back pressure on some notes. I am so lucky to have stumbled across your channel and website. I just ordered the book and flute kit and cannot wait to work through it all with my kiddos.

Thanks Charlie! I couldn't wait for the book, so I grabbed and printed an image of page 119, and now I'm headed back to the shop. IN OTHER WORLDS: Sometimes I wish you could show a frequency spectrum analysis of each flute, since that would SHOW the harmonics that make or break a flute tone. (Maybe you already have, but I just haven't discovered it yet) Certainly some body's smart phone would have this type of app. Thanks again...and as usual... THANKS FOR THINKING!

personally I prefer the sound of the medium and long tracks. though I make mine with a short track to reduce screw ups. I have made some with long and medium tracks and I always mess it up and they don't play well if at all.

From everything I have found, it makes no difference how long the slow air channel is. All it affect is the length of the flute.

Hey William, thanks for your comment. We do have a number of videos showing the measurements of different size flutes and of course they're all listed as well as in my book "The Art of Native American Flute Making". If you have any questions about finger spacings feel free to send them to me in an email on my website bluebearflutes.com and I will be glad to help you out.

Thanks Charlie, very helpful. I am on my 3rd flute. First one came out great, second one came out good (although the tuning was off...First hole note sharp) but I had a strange issue on my 3rd flute that led me to discard it all together...The fundamental note played great, but every other note was extremely airy and felt like there was absolutely no back pressure....to the point that I considered it unplayable ...I think the diameter of my air hole and sound chamber were too large or the flute was too long 13-14 inches, but I don't understand how the fundamental note would still play so good... Any Diagnosis? Thanks Charlie, not sure if you are still responding to this video......On a side note, I recently received my flute from you and am so happy and impressed....I posted a YT review on my page, but I am a spec in the universe of a page....mostly just for fun.

Thanks so much for your kind words my friend! It would be best if you still had that flute to send me a picture of it to my bluebearflutes website. Otherwise it sounds like you might be on the right path with regards to the size of the sound hole. Any questions like those in the future feel free to send to my website and I will be glad to take a look at them. :)

There's a good chance that the bottom length of the flute is too much. The best way to find out what is going on however is to First contact me through my website bluebearflutes.com and then once I respond you can email me a picture of them. From there I can probably tell you what's happening immediately.

Why can't you make the air supply on a larger flute the same as a little flute like you make?
@BlueBearFlutes
@BlueBearFlutes 6 жыл бұрын
Because it wouldn't produce as loud or as clear a sound and sometimes won't allow all notes to play properly. It is relative to the tone it produces. :)
