I’m about to breed my parakeets! I knew one of them is a female and the other a male I just didn’t know who was who, so I named them with Uni-sex names! This really helped, thank you!

Well,to identify them look at there nostrils the one with white nostrils is a girl and blue is a boy.

Well, let's just put it this way: You will never see a female budgie mount a male "doggy style" position, so that's another way you can tell. A female budgie might step on another budgie's butt to assert dominance, but a male budgie will climb up on the female and do the vertical mambo. I have to walk away when mine do that, because it's weird to see. LOL

I have 2 female parakeets, Cloudie May and Sunryze Bay. Cloudie has ALWAYS had a white cere with kind of a bluish tinge but you could barely tell the blue there unless you get real close to her nose. Sunryze had a white cere for a hot minute, then her nose turned a light brownish color. My older male parakeet, Rainee Day, his nose was purple, like a light lilac color when I got him a year ago, then it turned into a pretty metallic blue as he matured. Boy is horny as hell tho. LOL Now I just bought a baby male parakeet from a pet store, and his little nose is also a light purple color. That's how I can tell whether mine are male or female. My baby parakeet's name is Ocean Spray. Don't ask why I picked these names, I'm just a weird Aquarius like that. LOL

Very well put. It is my understanding that very experienced breeders can tell the sex of budgies very early on, not from the cere, but from the shape of the head and jaw. (Female jaws are more developed.) It is obviously not foolproof, but some people are almost 100% accurate at birth using this technique.

This is an older video and I hope you will still see this but I have 2 -2 week old babies that I am handfeeding and I am trying to figure out gender, even though I plan to do DNA testing. Dad is a Lutino lacewing and mom is a light green cinnamon, so if sex linked will my babies be both female? Neither has red eyes in the babies.

I have an albino male who I know for sure is male. It's pretty rare but sometimes males can also get the ino mutation as well, so it isn't 100% foolproof, but more often than not an ino will be female.

nope. male and female both can be ino. male needs two ino allele, while females need one ino allele to be visually a ino bird.

hi, I have owned budgies for two years and they recently began breeding, I took away their egg and began researching everything about how tosupply for growing budgies needs, and how to hand rear them, should the parents not know how, the parents are 2 years for the male, and 2.5 years for the female approxamitely, after I was sure I had gathered all the crucial information I allowed them to have babies, three of the five eggs hatched, and the babies are all growing at a steady pace and are about 14 days old for the older two, and the third hatched about 3 days later, my concern is with the mother, she is behaving normally, and very alert, no tail bobbing or other signs of illness, however her cap was fully yellow, but has become darker and the only cause I can find was a fatty diet causing this, and they are on a seed mix of wheat, white proso millet, red milo, black oil sunflower, peanuts, and mineral oil, but the refuse to eat any other part of the food, I have attempted to give them carrots, oranges, apples, and blackberries, however they refuse to eat them, I have eaten the items in front of them as obviously as possible, have tried mincing them, mixing them into their food, and in the past (before they had babies) I removed the option of millet for 1 hour per day, only offering them the other foods, however they simply refused to eat it, and would go for the seeds as soon as i put them back, as for the seed diet when i go to clean their dishes i notice that only the millet is eaten, I have added Avian Plus, vitamin and mineral supplement for virds, however the container does not specify how much to give them, or for what size serving, so i use it in VERY small ammounts to prevent overdosing, I dont know what else I can do, is there anything you can recomend to me to give my birds the best care? I do everything I can to make sure my animals are in their best conditions, and since i dont have a large space for a big cage leave their cage door open whenever i am in my room to supervise so that the get enough exersize, but i just cant get them to eat healthy, spinnich, apple, blackberry, carrot, bell pepper, oranges, watermelon, and a few others have all been offered, and none accepted

Another way to tell a chicks sex is if say the Dad was cinnamonwing and the mum was not, then all the chicks with cinnamon wings will be Hens. This is the same for opaline, ino and Latino’s, clearbodys, lacewing and slate.
