Speaking of Switch, I’m still baffled there is still no some sort of a trophy/achievement system on it, really sucks as it’s a big motivation to 100% games and is very satisfying.

I’ve seen a lot of Nintendo players complain and criticize the trophy/achievements systems on PlayStation and Xbox respectively. I don’t understand it, because trophies add more value and replayability to the games that people love. I could see Nintendo creating a Mario themed “Super Star” type of trophy achievement system, at least to their 1st party games, and it being a really big hit.

Nintendo will be fine, but I do wish it was more powerful. I don’t play portable like most people, so I play it at home most of the time. Switching inputs between it and PS4 is tough, because the PS4, has HDR support on most games these days. It’s hard playing non HDR stuff now

I feel the "story" of BOTW often gets short-handed. The world and gameplay is the story in the sense that the more you progress the more you learn of the world of Hyrule and Link himself. Link starts with no knowledge, yet the player by the end is the "hero," meaning Link, via the player, actually remembers everything. He's become a hero. IMO that's a good presentation of a story without having straight-up cutscenes and with only sparse dialogue. It reminded me of a Valve game in that sense. Spoilers If you collect all of Link's memories, the last one shows Link defending Zelda with a bunch of demons dead. By that point, the player probably beat all those monsters in the game. The gameplay justifies the story, it engages the player (at least it did me).

I only beat the game like 6 months ago, so after all the hype I had big expectations. and i had heard the game had the best story in the Zelda series. And while that may be true, the story was pretty garbage. I was waiting for the Memory flashbacks to reveal something big or exciting or dramatic, and none of them landed. You basically learn nothing except that Zelda had confidence issues, and then they never bother explaining how she got over them. Last thing we see (that memory you mention after Link has slain like 30 robots offscreen) is her telling 2 servants to take Link to heal in the temple. And then..... nothing. Loved the game btw, but anyone who holds that story up as great is delusional. Not that you are saying it is great.

Here's what I want from a new Mario game (please hear me out) Imagine Mario64 and Peach's castle, I want the entire castle, all the grounds around it, and all sorts of secrets and whatnot, the layout would all be the same and the music would all be the same. Here's the rub, all of the paintings around the castle would be different, all the secrets would be different, and the bowser levels and boss fights would be different, other than that it would all look and play like odyssey but without cappy, other than all that it would be structurally identical to M64.

While possible I think that is unlikely. Most of the ports are from Wii U which only sold 13 million. The Switch has already sold triple that so there are a lot of people who never got to play the Wii U exclusives.

Detroit and Dark Sky Paradise are his best projects by far in terms of lyrical content and subject matter. Big Sean’s a very talented rapper. His wordplay is creative and funny like Kanye West, his flow is current and popular enough to the point that Drake implemented it heavy back in 2013-2015, and his skill as a lyricist is high enough for him to at least hop on tracks with the likes of rappers like Eminem, Royce Da 5’9, Kendrick Lamar, Pusha T etc. and hold his own.

A Switch Pro with pretty modest improvements wouldn’t be worth it to me. A more significant next gen leap in 2023 is where the focus should be. Utilize DLSS 2.0 AI upscaling to make 720p and 1080p games look fantastic, improve frame rates, use the new 64 GB game cards to make very crisp ports of demanding games from third party developers, and improve the durability/quality of the material used to make the system.

I don't really understand why Imran thought the Bravely Default 2 demo was bad. In terms of content available and the amount of objectives you have to do, it was certainly on par with the demos for the previous two games. And visually it's a clear evolution from the 3DS games, not just in graphical fidelity, but also in art style and the way characters are placed within the town you have access to.

It might be that Nintendo has found a way to get them cheaper with time, but if that isn't the case then there's cause to reconsider the format. Not to mention the fact the games have and will continue to grow in size.

My biggest fear about picking up a Switch is Nintendo shortly after releasing the successor to it. Out of the Big 3, Nintendo has always been the one to screw me over in that way. Otherwise, I really want to pick up a Switch for games like BOTW, Odyssey, Smash Ultimate, Splatoon 2, Super Mario 3D Collection etc. I just know that we are inbound for a Super Switch (Nintendo you’d better call it that!) successor by 2022/2023.

gremjs03 Yeah, that’s true. However, Nintendo’s product lineup in particular was nothing short of erratic up until recently. Especially, with their handheld lineup. DS, DS Lite, DSi, DSi XL, 2DS, New 2DS XL, 3DS, 3DS XL etc. I typically don’t trip out over hardware iteration releases though. I bought my PS4 at the end of 2015, and then the PS4 Pro got revealed like 6 months later. It’s only natural. I’ve just never liked the way Nintendo has done it.

The Wii U failed because everyone thought it was a controller. Everyone I knew in the late 00's owned a Wii, even if they didn't regularly play videogames (we are talking grandmas and soccer moms). When the Wii U was going into its second holiday season - or whatever the one with 3D World was, the people who had heard "Wii U" were STILL buying Wii games and were of the mind that it was the current "Nintendo," that the Wii U was an accessory (like the Balance Board) for drawing. It was not as though the hardware was flawed or that it lacked games - it was getting GOTY contenders at a pretty steady pace which made it worth owning for core gamers. The biggest problems Nintendo ran into with casual gamers was the history of Wii software. Lots of great games on that system, but all you'd ever see advertised/taking up shelf space were compilations of minigames and the like. They didn't have confidence that 3rd party titles would be coming to the system in an acceptable state. Lost the grandmas, lost the casual gamers, retained core gamers and Nintendo loyalists - which isn't enough to keep a console going. Fast forward to the Switch and a good portion of those people who I knew back in the day are VERY aware that the Switch is "The new Nintendo" and have either bought it or are planning to. Funny enough, the pandemic/lockdown drove a handful of them to order the Switch. A new Switch is coming, but I don't think it's smart to make any sort of push to a new platform amidst current affairs. They'll probably double down on what they have now for the next few years until the economy shows signs of recovery. The Switch is basically everything I hoped the Vita would be and though I game more and more on PC these days rather than dedicated hardware (mostly due to emerging problems in the realm of dedicated hardware/software than for the merits of PC), I could see myself picking up a successor. If Nintendo drops it at the right time, revamps online/social services with a newly minted GamePassesque tier and refines the premise more, I think it could do really well. Their biggest threat atm is Streaming, but that likely won't be formiddable by the time a Switch 2 gets rolled out. Please god don't call it Switcheroo or NEW Switch though. It needs to be rebranded to the Nintendo Balance or something like that

I feel like folks forget that there is no dedicated handheld system right now (lite not withstanding) for the first time since Game Boy. There were always teams working on great games for the inferior handheld hardware throughout gaming history. Now those teams can make switch games 🤷‍♂️. Like Astral Chain etc, we won’t see the AAA titles from the big consoles get ported anymore but there has always been smaller teams from big companies (Square, anyone?) that want to work on smaller titles. I think the Switch can last as long as there is no other pure handheld option.

The success of games last like DQXIS, Octopath Traveler, Megaman 11, Mortal Kombat 11, Dragonball FighterZ, Doom, Witcher 3, Mario+Rabbids: Kingdom Battle, Sonic Mania, Marvel Ultimate Alliance 3 and Astral Chain proves that Switch is in a far different and better space compared to Wii U and Wii when it comes to third party engagement. Companies are being rewarded and profiting from their efforts on Switch and that’s why Bravely Default II, No More Heroes 3, Ruin Factory 5, Shin Megami Tensei V, Bayonetta 3, Sakuna: Of Rice and Ruin, Kingdom Hearts: Melody of Memory and Balan Wonderland are coming and for the first five cases are exclusive.

The Switch Pro/2 will almost certainly use a new Nvidia APU based on the RTX GPUs Tensor cores, with DLSS 2.0 integration. Nvidia already published job offerings for engineers to work on a new "next gen gaming console", and we know it's not for Microsoft or Sony cause they went all in with AMD. Even though the games probably still won't run natively at more than 1080p, the end results will be almost identical to 4K.

How do you guys have a talk like this and not even mention Smash Bros? I know you guys don't have anyone in your crew that digs fighting games but it's still a juicy topic. The Smash FGC is living in a golden age that arguably no other fighting game/franchise has ever seen Smash Ultimate is Sakurai's Magnus Opus. A game like it will never exist again. Next Smash will not have as large as a roster, stages, music, etc. Or so many unique IPs represented in a celebration of gaming in general Does Nintendo keep Smash Ultimate alive through games as service model for years to come? Or do they stop after this season and make a new one that will never live up to Ultimate? Please Please Please tackle this topic at some point. I'd love to hear your thoughts!

Collecting the spirits isn't hard. It takes dedication. So props to Tim on that. Imran spoke about SF 1 episode because of the SFVI delay and Ono "stepping down". Blessing enjoys NetherRealm's fighters stories for sure 👍. But Greg Miller himself said no one at the Kinda Funny crew is hardcore into fighters. Which is fine 👍. They didn't even talk about the round table the FGC creators had the other day 😓. Which was a big deal and something JP developers never do

The popular artists have all migrated from DefJam and are all on their own labels/not on def jam so they’d have to rebrand the whole game. No Dreamville (J. Cole) TDE (Kendrick Lamar) and OvO (Drake) artists could be on it under a Def Jam name for example . Also according to Joe Budden, a lot of the lower popularity rappers didn’t get compensated properly for their likeness being in the game when compared to the bigger ones like Snoop Dogg or Sean Paul. So none of those rappers would want to be put in a new game due to that previous bad business. It just wouldn’t be realistic to get all these A list rappers on a game. cuz Kanye alone is asking for 20 million and a percentage of every game sale. Def Jan FFNY was a perfect storm of the predatory practices of the music industry and the world not respecting video games enough at that time
