What is the IDEAL MAGNIFICATION in dentistry?

Couldn't agree more. I upgraded from 3.5x as a D1 to 4.5x as a D3 and I think they are perfect. Many of my classmates are scared to go higher than 3.5 or 4.0, but I think 4.5x offers all of the benefits you described and I use them for every type of procedure

That's awesome! What made you think about switching as a D1? Was there a certain procedure where you felt you needed more magnification? Just curious what the "ah-ha" moment was :)

@@KevinDental I didn't consider switching until I was a D3 working on patients. I was performing endo on #12, 2 canals, and felt like I couldn't see well enough. 4.5x have been perfect for everyday use. I use them for perio, surgery, endo and restorative.

I do wish you were able to provide a base view before magnification so we know the difference between no magnification and 2.5.

A big problem is that people do not even know that the microscope is an option, it is simply relegated to endo. Meanwhile there is plenty of research to show that it is actually the gold standard for quality of work that can be performed restoratively as well.

I agree. I was not using loupes in dental school and few years after. So i went and bought 4x zeiss pro mag. I had not done any research, i simply went and purchased because those were zeiss and the salesman there convinced me those were the best. So its the best to buy higher mag loupes and go for it. It would come natural. Now I own zeiss Pico and doing most of the procedures with it cept for scaling and cleaning, and of course extractions. All the other procedures are better done with a scope than with loupes

That's cool! I've tried the Zeiss loupes too. They certainly are crystal clear and bright! It's cool that you are using the scope now. How long did you have your loupes before switching to the scope?

KevinKuoProductions a year and half, more or less. The scope I have help me a lot( documenting, doing cases otherwise impossible), I am not an endo specialist but having more than 3 endo cases a day, Forced me to into that field so a scope is a must

Slightly disagree. I just recently upgraded form 3.0x to 5.5x. Some problems i had was if i move my neck just a little bit, i would lose the focus and field of view. even some blinking would affect the focus probably because the depth of field is so narrow. i could see my dark spots on my left eyes which bugged me a lot, and then I reazlied it is probably my eyelashes getting in the way of the field of view (maybe my eyelashes are in the way of my vision and it is more noticeable when i use the higher magnification. Or it is just my mild astigmatism). 5.5x definitely gives a better look and vision to the tooth i am working, therefore i knew how much more i needed to remove or how to polish better. however, experience wise was not pleasing. Also i started to realize many loupes are still factory manufactured therefore it is not 100% personalized. When i had my 5.5x, the working distance was very short and the rep told me that it is set to 44cm while my actually WD is 48cm. because the depth of field is so narrow with 5.5x, I had to change my seating in a very specific way to see well, and it was more uncomfortable to use 5.5x loupes overall. I am thinking to change it to 3.5x or 4.5x at this point. disclaimer: i could see the higher magnification could be better for the endo

I have not heard about that brand. Just make sure they are light and comfortable, in addition to the good clarity and field of view.

Very informative video. For a first time loupe buyer and practising ortho would you recommend 2.5x or 3x. I have never used loupes or even tried a pair. Looking at investing in them because of a slight visual impairment

It's not a huge difference. But certainly noticeable under certain circumstances.

I've just started preclinics (Restorative and Endodontics) and i have both 2.5x and 3.5x flip up loupes. Do you think they will suit a beginning and first-time use until further that i progress and upgrade to higher a magnification?

Since you are just starting, how about you try 3.5x first? Then if 3.5x seems like it's going well, you won't have to use your 2.5x. If 3.5x seems too high for you, you can always use the 2.5x. You can always switch to a higher magnification later in your training!

I am a first year dental student looking to buy my first pair of loupes. I am looking deciding between Designs for Visions new panoramic 3.5 and 4.5, since the panoramic allows such a broad field of view would it be practical getting a 4.5 as my first pair of loupes?

Hi Kevin, thanks for your insight on loupe magnifications! My question is, if 5.0x is the ideal magnification in your opinion, why aren't practicing dentists or faculty in the clinic use that magnification? I'm a 2nd year dental student and almost every faculty member I've seen, whether in sim lab or the clinic, seem to only work with 3.0x, 3.5x and even 2.5x magnification. The same goes for practicing dentists I've seen. What's your take on that? I recently upgraded to a 3.5x from 3.0x, but now I kind of feel "guilty" for shelling out hundreds of dollars more as a mere second-year student when even faculty members aren't using that high magnification :( I understand that it's all personal preference and that using the magnification that fits ME is the important thing, but I was wondering what your thought is on the question I posed above.

I have not tried those before. It could work well. But besides magnification, consider the field of view, depth of field, and general quality. Also consider weight and comfort.

Zeiss loupes are the clearest loupes I've worn. Things just look "clean". With that said, I have not worn them for any length of time besides a demo. I have worn SurgiTel and Orascoptic at length. I like both brands.

@@KevinDental I have been wearing 4.5x Zeiss loupes since 2000. Same pair but various light sources over the years. I have tried others but I keep coming back to these because of the clarity. I will tell you they are heavy but I'm use to their weight. I just ordered Lumadents 5.0x loupes and I'm wondering what the comparison will end up being. Any comment about their comparison in clarity?

What about x6 magnification , do you think it's worth losing the depth of field at this point. I'm torn between x5 or x6 for general dentistry and specifically broken files retrieval and bypassing.

I feel like 4.5-5.0x is the sweet spot. You're definitely getting into the diminishing returns territory with higher magnifications. I wanted to go 6x after my old 5x loupes died, but when I've actually tried them, I found that in actuality a rather unimpressive improvement in magnification comes with more than 50% penalty in depth of field. I definitely could've gotten used to that(I almost did within a couple of minutes during the try-out), but ultimately decided against it. Yes, that extra level of detail might make a difference once in a blue moon, but the DoF penalty will be there every time you or your patient move your head.
