Some people say I'm crazy, but I'm learning Czech right now. There are many reasons for that... because I like it and because I will be one of the few out there who speaks it (as a foreign language). That's my strategy... and the combination Portuguese-Dutch-Czech will be quite unique. The next one will be Serbo-Croatian.

:)) I don't know! The thing is, even though it might not seem like it, it is pretty hard to make these videos. There are a lot of things you have to think about: the topic, how you're going to word things, what the sequence of sub-topics will be, lighting, elapsed time, breathing, no 'uhms', no excessive movements etc. etc. and you have to think about the correct 'execution' of the language too - grammar, pronunciation, vocabulary etc. Something has to give in this situation.. in my case it was the accent:) When I speak normally, I think (and hope!) my accent is about 99+% East-coast American.. here in these videos though...

All relevant resources mention that the 10 most important languages globally are: English, Spanish, French, Mandarin Chinese, Russian, and Arabic - undisputably Top 6 - and the rest are Portuguese, German, Hindi, and Japanese. Most would also agree that Italian, Korean, Turkish, and Vietnamese follow as the most important languages beyond the Top 10, after these any ranking starts to be difficult without bias, but Indonesian and Persian should not be overlooked either. I suppose we are going to witness the increasing importance of now much-ignored languages from the Indian subcontinent such as Urdu, Punjabi, Bengali, Marathi, Telugu, Tamil, or languages of Africa such as Swahili, Hausa, Igbo, Yoruba, Oromo or Amharic as the populous regions where these are spoken will start growing economically. BTW: I hope Vladimir will resume his YT career soon.

Which language to learn? This largely depends on one's interest. If one is in business, one might consider learning the language of the customer. If one is in tourism, I would suggest the language of those who travel most in the region where I live. In academia, it depends upon the field. Art history or European history: German, French, English, and then probably Italian, etc. If it is botany, biology, etc. - any of the natural sciences, English, German, French. The worst thing to do would be to expend tons of energy on learning a language of a culture that does not at all reflect one's interests and desires.

Great video :) I think the most important language thus far and for the future would be English for whatever reason/motive you have, since it's by far the most geographically widespread(there are tons of countries where the language is spoken such as India, Sri Lanka, Philippines, Malaysia, Singapore, South Africa, Nigeria, UAE etc, apart from the ones generally considered the ones using English as the 1st language like US, Canada and Australia), and versatile language in many things(academic realms, international business, trade and so on, literally...), and even if the idea that the world is going to become more and more "pluricentric" and there would be a growing demand to learn multiple languages instead of putting emphasis on only English the trend would stay unchanged at least for about 30~50 years to come I guess. As for the 2nd most important language after English I suppose you can pick up just the one that interests you the most or the language of the country you take utmost interest/predilection in, or the languages you really feel urgent to master in your life depending on the situations you're facing at the moment(i.e. Thai if you have to / are planning to work in Thailand). But if we're to choose the one solely judging by the international usefulness without those kind of specific reasons I'd say the wise ones would be the 5 other UN languages you pointed out in the video. ;) (French, Spanish, Arabic, Mandarin Chinese and Russian for broad geographic distribution and in view that people speaking those languages don't really speak English, and personally I guess probably Portuguese(?) will be one of the important languages in the future as well) PS : I live in Japan and there are a lot learning German over here in universities, but I don't really think it'd be as much important as those aforementioned languages... Oo)

Hi Vlad, great video! I think German is also worth mentioning. There were some 210 million speakers (native + L2) in 2014 and many people in Europe study German for work related purposes. In general, German speaking countries are among the most developed in Europe, and that's why many people may find learning German useful. Just saying. Anyway, thanks for the video. Hi Dominik, thank you very much. German is more of a regional language. It would almost fall in the same category as Portuguese. It's in the group of languages you would learn if you would be sure you'd have a job in Germany or in a German company, or a company working with German clients etc., but it cannot compare with Mandarin, Arabic, French, Spanish and Russian in terms of choosing a general safe bet language to learn I think. Hello, Vladimir. Thanks for another great video. Let me ask you a question. Have you ever found yourself learning a language just for purely practical, money-motivated reasons without any emotional attachment to the culture? I hear a lot of people say “I wanna learn this and that language because it’s practical, very few people speak the language and I’ll be appreciated and get a lot of money…” This is often the case with Chinese. Do you think this kind of motivation is sufficient? I don’t think so.

You're right about English, but it's a crappy lingua franca for the world. It's got phonemes that are so rare (such as the two th sounds and the r sounds) and it's verb conjugations and abundance of inconsistent case usage make it extremely hard to learn. If we need a world's lingua franca, I think it should be 1) nontonal, 2) caseless or case consistent and simple, 3) contain few phonemes or at least no really rare phonemes, 4) be notated in an easy-to-read and sounds-like-it-is-written way, and 5) have simple grammar structures such as SVO and adding a question marker to an SVO sentence. My top choices - though I need to explore more - would be Bahasa Indonesia, Standard Filipino, or Afrikans. Your thoughts?
@VladimirSkultetyOfficial7 жыл бұрын
If you ask for my opinion, I think it's good, that lingua francas are becoming what they are naturally. In a theoretical situation, if you were to decide on which language should be the lingua franca, I agree with most of what you say, but: languages change a lot over time. English a few hundred years ago matched its spelling well, now it deviated away from it far too much. This will happen and happens to all languages - regardless of whether they are constructed languages or real ones and on several levels, not only spelling - grammar, pronunciation, syntax etc. So your perfectly regular lingua Franca will necessarily mutate into something irregular in a few centuries or.. you'll have a diglossic situation, where the official written lingua Franca will remain regular but the thing people will speak will gradually become totally different.
@ching-huanwang60197 жыл бұрын
To Seth Thinks Thought: Your criteria for an ideal lingua franca seems good but have a problem--words might sound very similar and therefore confusing, and they usually need many syllables to tell different meanings apart. Take Japanese for example (which meets your criterion 1 to 3). Consonants N, T, K and the vowel A can be: katana(刀), kanata(彼方), tanaka(田中), or even nakatta (無かった). It looks like solving a high-school permutation and combination math question, right? Learners could have difficulty memorizing and distinguishing words with similar/confusing pronunciation.
@user-ql5pr1ih4j7 жыл бұрын
Seth Thinks Thoughts it is extremely easy to learn... All people know that.

Sorry I'm not some crazy polyglot myself, but why non tonal? Aren't tonal languages more efficient? If you can get more use out of the same sound, words can be shorter/single syllable and you can communicate quicker.
@VladimirSkultetyOfficial7 жыл бұрын
+Chr1551 The situation is really complex but in short: tonal languages are (probably) not as efficient as you think. Modern Mandarin - a tonal language - is not a good example and it would take a while for me to explain why and how it relates to what you say, but have a look at one absolutely extreme example from Classical Chinese: Shíshì shīshì Shī Shì, shì shī, shì shí shí shī. Shì shíshí shì shì shì shī. Shí shí, shì shí shī shì shì. Shì shí, shì Shī Shì shì shì. Shì shì shì shí shī, shì shǐ shì, shǐ shì shí shī shìshì. Shì shí shì shí shī shī, shì shíshì. Shíshì shī, Shì shǐ shì shì shíshì. Shíshì shì, Shì shǐ shì shí shì shí shī. Shí shí, shǐ shí shì shí shī shī, shí shí shí shī shī. Shì shì shì shì. Maybe you know this text. It is a poem written using only the 'shi' syllable under different tones with many different meanings even under the same tone. This fits your premise of 'get more use out of the same sound, words can be shorter/single syllable' perfectly, but it is impossible to communicate like this. No Mandarin speaker, after reading or hearing this would understand what was said (provided he/she has never heard the poem before of course). Again, it would be pretty complicated to explain why, but it is pretty straightforward. This was an extreme example, but the main problem with using the same sound with different tones is the same. You just don't know what is being said - that is exactly why Mandarin does not work like this. People would not understand each other.

Ciao Vladimir.

Momentálne premýšľam o svojej budúcnosti a potreboval by som tvoju pomoc.

Ahoj. Dakujem velmi pekne. Nevidim to velmi ruzovo ani ja. Vlastne, pokial ta to vyslovene nebavi, ani by som ti prekladanie/tlmocenie velmi neodporucal.

Hello Sergio. I think it depends on what your goal is. Do you plan on traveling and living in China or Taiwan in the future? Would you like to know how to read ancient texts or are you learning characters only for pleasure? By the way, I don't know whether it was your intention, but 中國 in your first sentence means China.

No, I don't think you're right. Even in Taiwan, when people write by hand, they often use simplified characters, especially the most frequent ones like 會/会 There's nothing wrong with simplified characters in my opinion. They are very practical. It is true that the traditional characters preserve more information and are easier to remember but I don't know whether you can call Traditional characters 'Real Chinese'. I could argue that Traditional characters are also only simplifications of the Seal script. For me personally, learning Traditional or Simplified is a question of practicality. I lived in Taiwan for 5 years, I naturally learned Traditional Chinese characters.

Dakujem pekne. Naposledy som bol v USA v roku 2006 (ked neratam tych 5 dni pred 2 rokmi) a pred tym v r. 2000.

Neviem no:)

As a native English speaker, Vladimir, your accent is very good. If you were to live in England or something, most people wouldn't at all think 'where is he from?'

Languages mentioned plus English because I firmly believe it will be a global language in the near future, too. Mandarin Spanish English Arabic Russian French It depends on your cultural, business, jobs interest as well professional goals, let's suppose you want to live in the following years in China of course Mandarin is your target language, if you want to do business with South America, choose Spanish without thinking a lot, maybe your dream is to work on Qatar or EAU let's master Arabic, and so on and so fart with the previous languages, all are beautiful and engaging to learn them very well, the last decision it is in our ambitions as a human beings + professionals. To sum up, whatever is your goal in the future English will follow a fundamental language since as Vladimir said it is spoken as an official language in every single continent and that won't change even if the US and the UK become poor countries and destroy their economies.
