Thank you for the information. I just matched today and am glad to be done with this process, but would like to add some insight to future residency applicants. Just to clarify the match algorithm isn’t a mystery. It started with John Nash (the movie “A Beautiful Mind” was about him), along with two other economists (Gale & Shapley) coming up with a system which benefits the individual first, but also benefits the whole hence why student ranking preference is prioritized first after the hospital preference. Second, I applied to residency having done research in both bioengineering and vaccine development. Neither one was discussed in all 17 of my interviews (Ivy/University/Community programs). My hobbies and interests were the most discussed parts of my application, the main reason being most med students are straight up boring with no personality. The comment about the KZbin channel standing out was spot on. BE INTERESTING OR FAKE IT!!!! Don’t just put “Reading” or “Bike Riding” in the hobbies section of your application. What was the last book you read? What’s your favorite hiking trail? These things make you stand out. Take it form a sub-par applicant such as myself that had plenty of interviews at places, I never thought would consider me. Third, pay attention to the schedule/curriculum. Many programs are moving away from 24 hours shifts which research has shown to not provide any educational benefit but instead just allow the hospital to utilize cheap labor. Learn what a night float is and how programs have theirs set up if they do. Benefits make a difference too. Some places have stellar parking/food/resident lounges and others don't. These things matter for your overall happiness. Lastly, be grateful for whatever program you end up in. You’ve made it to a point many people never get to. It may not be your number one, but it’s a place that will train you, nonetheless. Grow where you’re planted. Good luck.

I don't know where this notion that applying to multiple specialties is somehow dangerous or looked down upon lol. You only want to go through this process once and not have any regrets. I applied to three specialties, had plenty of interviews, and matched. Definitely a little more costly but look at how much debt you're graduating with. It's a drop in the bucket. Believe in yourself and apply to what interests you. The universe will do the rest.

The one thing that I did student teaching did not prepare me is too look up on how to meet the needs of all students and sometimes not able to meet all the needs of students.

I am currently studying medicine in Peru. I would like to do my residency abroad. If someone from another country could help me or guide me about the residency process in their countries and how it is for international students. It would be great. Thanks! 😊

Great talk. I have one suggestion, either asking guests not to hit the table or moving the microphone so it doesn't make sound every time the table is touched. Thanks for your work.

Hi Dr. Love your videos! I recently blacked out on a plane for at least 20 minutes after feeling like I was going to puke. When I woke up I went to er, all my labs came back negative, further testing at primary doc/Neurologists including Head MRI and EEG/EKG were normal. Yet I'm still having weird vision like floaters, headaches, and light sensitivity, and a lot of tinnitus? Any advice?! 🙏🏻

It can be catastrophic to apply to three competitive specialties, my guy.
@omarb2052 жыл бұрын
I did this cycle and had no issues securing interviews and matching. More expensive and unpredictable but by no means catastrophic.
@thesneakygamer43432 жыл бұрын
@@omarb205 I couldn’t imagine rolling the dice on my career like that. However, if you like the specialties relatively equally I guess it’s okay.
