I’m Matthew 19:9, Jesus is stating the person divorcing his wife and remarrying is committing adultery unless he divorced his wife because of her sexual immorality. He wasn’t saying that unless the divorce was for the wife’s immorality that SHE commits adultery. The explanation given in this video is misleading and does not follow what is actually stated by Jesus in Matthew 19:9. That is a dangerous thing to do, especially about such a serious, life altering issue.

It took me a second to pinpoint this as well. I don't think this is a correct interpretation of the scripture. The adultry is being assigned to the wrong person here.

Remarriage - An Adulterous Lifestyle 💔 Much as divorce is sinful, remarriage following divorce is yet more sinful. It is a step 🚶‍♀️ further against the moral laws of God. The Scriptures consistently describe remarriage while a person's partner lives as adultery. Consider the following verses: "And he saith unto them Whosoever shall put away his wife, and marry another, committeth adultery against her. And if a woman shall put away her husband, and be married to another, she committeth adultery" (Mark 10:11, 12). "And I say unto you, Whosoever shall put away his wife, except it be for fornication, and shall marry another, committeth adultery: and Whosoever marrieth her who is put away doth commit adultery" (Mathew 19:9). "Whosoever putteth away his wife, and marrieth another, committeth adultery: and Whosoever marrieth her that is put away from her husband committeth adultery" ( Luke 16:18). "So then if, while her husband liveth, she be married to another man, she shall be called an adulteress: but if her husband be dead, she is free from that law; so that she is no adulteress, though she be married to another man" (Romans 7:3). These Scriptures consistently describe remarriage as adultery. The Greek verb tense translated "committeth adultery" shows present continuous action, suggesting not simply an act of adultery, but a practice of adultery. The verse in Romans likewise shows that while a person's partner lives, remarriage is not a valid marriage👎, but an adulterous condition. There is an act of adultery- the sin of sexual union while married to another. There is also the condition of adultery - the sin of a marriage relationship with another while one's true 💑 marriage partner is living. With such clear Scriptures, why would professing Christians ✝️ 🤔 attempt to justify divorce and remarriage? One lady who herself married a divorced man and later denounced her situation as an adulterous union described her downfall. REASONING is one of satan's 😈 most effective weapons. How easy 😏 to reason away obedience to the Word of God. The eternal purpose ✨ 💛 of this life is not so much that we should be happy but that we should be holy. Yet there can be no true happiness apart from righteous living... "I fasted and prayed 🙏 a great deal, seeking God for an answer directly from Himself. But, although I sought a word from Him, no word was given. Nothing. Complete 🔕 silence. Only later did it come home to me that it is vanity seek a rhema (utterance) from God when He has already so clearly spoken in the written Word. Yes, a word may come which contradicts what He has said in the Scriptures; but that word 🤔 comes from the wrong source 😈. It is impossible to remarry with integrity while one's partner is still living. The treacherous spirit which leads to divorce is the same spirit which leads one to remarry. It is a betrayal 😔. In marriage , 💑 one can give his commitment to his partner, but in remarriage one can give only his treachery and 💔 broken trust. - Christian Family Living, pgs 173-175, John Coblentz.

BEWARE OF FALSE DOCTRINE HEREIN, FROM FASLSE TEACHERS: 2 Timothy Chapter 4 3 "For the time will come when they will not endure sound doctrine; but after their own lusts shall they heap to themselves teachers, having itching ears; 4 And they shall turn away their ears from the truth, and shall be turned unto fables." Yes divorce may be thrust on us but we need to remember that marriage is not a contract that if the other half draws back from his promise it falls , marriage is a Covenant which makes the whole thing completely different. God instituted marriage, it is a Covenant instituted by God himself and so the vow is not only with the spouse but with God himself and so if the husband or wife decides to break his/her vow he or she has to answer to God but the one left still has to answer for his/her vow with God. So it doesn't depend on the spouse who breaks the vow , we all have to answer God for our decisions.

You guys are messing around. The accurate word is ‘fornication’…that is the word that comes from the Greek ‘porneia’.. Pay close attention, Jesus did not say ‘except for adultery’…those are two specific things and are mentioned as such in the Bible. The Greek for adultery is moicheuo. That’s one of the many reasons the KJV should be the go to version. The whole generalized ‘sexual immorality’ just leads people down the wrong path. They are being to, and allowing themselves to believe it’s ok to divorce and re marry if there was adultery in their marriage. No. That’s not the case. If you can’t be together l then be separated. But you can not marry anyone else while your husband or wife is alive. Jesus was saying if a man found out his wife was not a virgin before he married her then he could divorce her. Porneia=equals general sexual immortality, fornication. Moicheuo=adultery. He did not say for adultery.

Or the "innocent spouse" whose wife wanted to marry a guy from work? I was faithful, worked hard, and provided her a loving home. But she betrayed me. Our two children never have really recovered. One died by suicide a few years ago. The other is in a horrific, same-sex relationship. I remarried 25 years ago to a never-married Christian woman. We have a loving Christian relationship and have just retired. If God sends me to hell for this incident that was out of my control and for which I have repented for whatever portion of the divorce was actually my fault, what does that say?

In Matthew was written to Jews who had the custom of divorcing from the betrothal, which is why the word "fornication" was used instead of "immorality" or "adultery." In the other gospels, this exception is not mentioned because the gentiles had no custom of divorcing from the betrothal, meaning engagement. This is also why God said to remain single or be reconciled if one divorced because God makes them one person, they don't make themselves that way. God did this, therefore what God does no one can undo.

THE TRUTH ABOUT THE "EXCEPTION CLAUSE" The 3 words "Exept for Fornication" was added by Erasmus in the 15th century. Greek translations before read "Not over Fornication" Christians don't know the context of the Jews questioning Jesus in Mathew about divorce. God had separated the Jews from every other nation by requiring DEATH PENALTY for fornication (whoredom all sexual sin) and NOT divorce. The Jews asked Jesus could they divorce over non-fornication issues because IT WAS JEWISH LAW FOR Capital punishment for Fornication offenses.... Jesus answered and said that whoever divorces his wife "not over Fornication" ( Fornication was only punishable by death or resolved through forgiveness) and marries another commits adultery and whoever marrys her commits adultery and he causeth her to commit adultery. That is what the pre 1500 greek manuscripts stated That is why for 1500 years ALL CHURCH FATHERS prohibited divorce and remarriage ----------------------- Here's the actual comprehensive research on the subject of the mistranslation of by Erasmus of Mathew 19:9, lmf12.files.wordpress.com/2012/11/divorcemcfallview1.pdf pay particular attention to pages 12 and 13 as these are actual pictures of Erasmus's actual handwriting possibly. God bless Tomothy Mcfall for this wonderful study Jewish Lawyers Questioned Jesus and ALREADY KNEW that "GODS LAW", that all whoredom was punishable by death, (we also know that Moses ADDED to GODS LAW because of the hardness of their hearts (allowing for Divorce, yet Jesus ELIMINATED What Moses Added in the previous verses)) So again, getting back to How the Jewish Lawyers asked Jesus if they could divorce (FOR ANY CAUSE, (the causes they were referring to was NON WHORDOM CAUSES because whoredom was punishable by death (or forgiveness in Old Testament and New Testament Times if the offender repented such as David with Bathsheba, and later David forgave his Betrothed Wife who was with another man, David rightfully took her from him as She was his wife, sparing her life))) So again rephrasing, Jewish Lawyers asked Jesus: Can we divorce for causes other than whoredom? Jesus response to Jewish Lawyers who were still under the Law, was whoever divorces his wife for causes other than whoredom (as whoredom is punishable by death), that man commits adultery, and whoever marries her commits adultery WHY was this omitted from Mark, Luke, and John? The REAL REASON its omitted from Mark, Luke, John ect.. is because, Mark, Luke, John and other books were circulated among NON JEWS who were not required to by law to perform the death penalty for whoredom INSTEAD, men had to FORGIVE their adulterous wives and REMAIN MARRIED as shown EVERYWHERE in scripture. EVEN Jewish men (who could stone to death their adulterous wives), were taught to FORGIVE. Jesus told the woman caught in the act of adultery to sin no more this includes RETURN TO YOUR HUSBAND, this REQUIRED her husband to FORGIVE HER and be reconciled. RESTATED LINKS: lmf12.files.wordpress.com/2012/11/divorcemcfallview1.pdf pay particular attention to pages 12 and 13 as these are actual pictures of Erasmus's actual handwriting possibly. The expression “sexual immorality” covers a range of sexual sins outside of marriage such as adultery, prostitution, homosexuality, etc. Today, adulterers are married persons who willingly have sexual relations with the opposite sex that is not their legal marriage mate. Jesus’ words at Matthew 5:32 and 19:9 mean that the only divorce grounds that severs the marriage bond is Por•nei’a on the part of one’s marriage mate. Porneia is the Greek rending of Fornication and includes all forms of illicit sexual activity outside of Scriptural marriage.

Expectation is reconciliation really, where? Forgiveness is required reconciliation requires two broken people to trust each other. Further being one doesn’t mean you can’t be two again. It just means it’s going to be painful when you sever. If a body part is diseased, or gangrenous if you don’t cut it off, it will kill your whole body. Matthew 5:30 If you cut off your own physical body, how much more relationships. Taking this scripture this way you can argue against organ transplants as unbiblical, after all what God joined together in your body, you severed, and are now joining to someone else. Christians commit sin, sometimes willfully. And sometimes you can’t be in relationship with them anymore. If you believe that forgiveness requires absolute trust again, let me see you trust your brother or sister who is a sex offender to work in Sunday school with the little ones. After all, reconciliation and restoration is the expectation.

If my "wife" lets herself become one flesh with another dude I'm divorcing her. If I didn't that would be very effeminate and the effeminate shall not inherit the kingdom (1corinthians6:9). I agree with everything said in this video, truly, it was all good stuff. But that being said there's even more reason Jesus said what he said: The whole idea of marriage biblically is that you are technically married once you have sex. Because you have become one flesh. If my "wife" becomes one flesh with another dude I'm kicking her out hands down. Sex is a spiritual act, you can't escape that reality just because you didn't get married under the law in your country. The law in your country is man made. The likes of which Jesus explicitly speaks against. All that being said this is why you have to choose your wife carefully. This will very likely not even happen to me because I'll be choosing a woman who's actually on fire for God.

Error Alert! #1. Divorce is only rightly done when a husband divorces his wife for becoming one flesh with a man before she has become one flesh with her husband. Once the husband marries the wife he can divorce her as the law says and not before. #2. After a man takes a wife and marries her, and he becomes aware that the wife committed fornication before the marriage then he can divorce her and they both would be free to marry another, but now the lord asks that we stay together but if we divorce the woman should remain unmarried 1COR.7:10-11. #3. 1COR.7 is dealing with the questions the Corinthians had concerning fornication 1. 1COR.7:1-9= the unmarried 2. 1COR.7:10-24= the married 3. 1COR.7:25-40= the virgins You can not read 1Cor.7:27-28 and apply this to married people this is for betrothed people who are loosed from an agreement to marry and notice it says nothing about divorce because in order to divorce you first have to get married. #4. So people without understanding say you could divorce a wife for being unfaithful during the betrothal period but it says nothing that in the law because when we read Deut.22:13-21 which the marrying process the woman is stoned during that period. #5. If Jesus was asked what does the Law say then his answer would have to be true and based on the Law which gives the right to go marry another person. Matt.19:9=Deut.24:1-4. We can't try and put Matthew against Mark and Luke, we have to realize some books don't always record everything said this is why we read all and rightly divide the word. If Mark and Luke don't agree with the Law but Matthew does then we see everything was not recorded.

What a heresy! Jesus is faithful when we are faithless! This passage says that he is faithful to his words that he will deny us when we deny him! Then exception clause is with line of God that he divorced Israel kingdom which was gone and never came back but Samaritans came in their place!
@danlds17

This clause was directed at the woman only, and with an OT cultural perspective. If it was discovered on the wedding night that the betrothed woman was not a virgin (assuming that the virgin price had been already paid to her father), then the man had the right to reject her (and not complete the marriage with her). It was viewed as a breach of contract. This of course is not what is preached today, since modern churches won't tolerate it.
@Phil-bm4xo
@Phil-bm4xo 9 ай бұрын
The exception clause was Jewish specific for a time when the Jews were still under the their Jewish/Mosaic law. Matthew was writing to a Jewish audience. It was this very audience who received the prophesy of the coming Messiah’s birth. It was this very audience who would understand the Jewish betrothal system of the Mosaic law as mentioned in Matthew 1:19, which describes the same situation Jesus excuses in 19:9 and 5:32. But Christ “abolished” the Old Law, making it “obsolete.” (Eph. 2:15; Heb. 8:13). Therefore, the exception clause, like the Old Law, with all its obligations, are done away with. The exception clause simply does not apply to Christians.

@@donovanreed3236 I’ve studied this in depth. It I have investigated the “innocent party” view inside and out, and it does not harmonize with scripture. I’ve investigated the word porneia as used in scripture and scripture and allowed scripture to define its meaning. Modern day lexicons and modern day preachers/teachers are satisfied teaching that divorce and remarriages permissible because it fits in culturally with the majority of their congregations. They are not careful in teaching their view that are actually teaching something completely contrary to what Christ said. They make Christ contradict himself when saying let no man put aunder but yet turn around and teach that it’s OK to divorce and remarry. It’s absurd. And they make Paul himself and go completely against Jesus is teaching on the topic. They teach that some sins or unforgivable. That some sins are unrestorable and unreconcilable. That again is absurd and goes completely against Christianity. I am not the one that needs to be careful when teaching this view, it is those that permit, divorce and marriage that need to be careful. They are promoting something God hates and and they will be accountable. What I am doing is teaching what Jesus said in Matthew 19:1-4 and Mark 10:9. I’m confirming what Jesus said, not substituting it for my own thoughts and desires. So no, it is not I that needs to be careful teaching what Jesus taught it, is those had dismisse this passage and teach that divorce and marriage is permissible when indeed it is not.

@@ElenaRoche It depends what it means by underage. We can all be immature before we get married. I had just turned 22 but it didn't take me long to realize how immature and unprepared I was for marriage. It was very tough and only by God's grace that we have been 38 yrs married to this day. He has blessed us in many ways after I repented of my sins & gave him to be Lord of my life . I believe if a girl understands enough the concept of marriage what it means to vow for life then she has no excuse. God is omnipresent and does not take a vow lightly. There are a lot of things that arent apart of Gods original plan. Thats kinda what sin is all about. Sex = Marriage! If your spouse becomes one flesh with another person you should divorce them. Let no man separate what God has brought together doesnt mean that no man WILL NOT seperate what God has brought together. If your spouse commits adultery they have essentially already divorced you. Stop looking at marriage through the lens of man made laws. You have to see this issue with spiritual eyes...

Never thought about it that way. Makes more sense than it being the one justification for divorce tho. It's the one thing that if you divorce them for YOU won't be the one making them an adulterer when they're with someone else because THEY have already made themselves an adulterer. That is a paradigm shift! Is that even right? *edit: I think there is a miss assignment going on here. The bible says the man who divorces becomes the adulterer not the wife he divorced. So, this interpretation doesn't line up for me at this point.

The scripture is saying that if you divorce a person and marry someone else. You have therefore committed adultery. UNLESS it was because of sexual immorality that took place in the first instance. And then, if so that is the only exception to which you have committed adultery can be inapplicable in such a matter, SHOULD you decide to leave them and remarry. Mathew 19:9 I tell you that anyone who divorces his wife, except for sexual immorality, and marries another woman commits adultery."

Disciple Shayne That word in Matt 19:9 and Matt5:32 should be translated fornication not sexual immorality because sexual immorality is too general whereas fornication is referring to sex outside marriage. Pl read Matt 1: 18-19 Joseph was ready to divorce Mary because he thought she committed fornication . Please note that they were still betrothed (engaged). Betrothal in Jewish tradition meant that the couple were legally married before consummation thus the need for a divorce . We need to also note that in Matt 19:9 there is the word pornea for fornication and moichea which means adultery. So Jesus used two different words to explain infidelity. The mistake that many preachers are doing today is that they are teaching that pornea is adultery and we even have translations like the NIV which says marital unfaithfulness (another word for adultery) or adultery. It is sad that many are too lazy to research the right doctrine. Still many more do not realize that yeast have been sown in Bible colleges with such doctrine which have worked through many many churches to the detriment of God s name and countless broken marriages.

Jesus used the word Porneia in the exception clause. He did not use the word adultery/moichao. Porneia (fornication) is a term that refers to the unmarried. In Matthew 1:19 and John 8:41, porneia describes a betrothal situation where a couple had not yet entered into a covenant marriage. Jesus had just established in 19:4-6 that a covenant marriage is for life (v. 6 “let no man put asunder”). By using the word porneia, He excuses ONLY a betrothal situation in which one could “put away” their espoused/betrothed. This is the ONLY putting away that did not break the marriage covenant with God, whereby, no one was “putting asunder what God had joined together” (19:4,6,8). Matthew was writing to a Jewish audience who was still living under the Jewish/Mosaic practice of betrothal. Mark and Luke were writing to Gentiles, who did not follow the Jewish/Mosaic practice of betrothal. And Paul was writing to Christians who also did not follow the Jewish/Mosaic practice of betrothal, therefore the exception clause was not in Mark, Luke, Corinthians or Romans. The exception clause is only addressing putting away, not remarriage. Remarriage is never permitted, except if your covenant spouse is deceased, 1 Corinthians 7:39. Only death breaks the marriage covenant. 1 Corinthians 7:39. God hates divorce. Therefore, he does not permit it for covenant marriages. 19:4-6,8-9, 5;32; Luke 16:18; Mark 20:1-12. Paul forbade divorce as well. Only separation or reconciliation are the options for Christians, 1 Corinthians 7:10-11.

I don't know. That last part seemed tweaked to suit convenience. After all, one's understanding of abuse can be highly subjective. Right idea just bit off in explanation. The greek exception word is porneia - which is not actually sexual immorality in scripture but fornication. So Christ is saying only divorce is excepted within the betrothal period or perhaps if she was found not to be a virgin when that was expected in that type of culture. Fornication only happens before the marriage day proper. The Jews had a rare situation from God that betrothal was a type of legal marriage (read Joseph wanting to put away Mary) - its the same today in Jewish culture. Betrothal is considered marriage of sorts until the full wedding day comes. This is why Jesus gave this exception to the Jews as Mathew was written to the Jews while no exception in the other 3 gospels as they were for the gentiles that didn't have that culture of the Jews. If Christ allowed adultery as grounds for divorce he would have said so...He didn't. Marriage really is a living sacrament....and very special.

One of the oldest churches, the Catholic church, does not allow for divorce and remarriage. Another of the oldest churches, the Orthodox church, does. Jesus states that divorce and remarriage = adultery 4 times in the Gospels. 2 of those times includes an exception for sexual immorality, 2 do not. As suggested by the above ambiguity, which causes so much debate within the church, God knew that it might not be good to never allow for divorce, but he also knew that if he spelled it out too clearly that that would be taken advantage of. The end result is that anyone who comes to faith and is concerned about it, will be extremely careful in their future decisions, and maybe that's the best possible answer. Which means to me I will never have a truly solid answer on whether it is right or wrong. And God in his wisdom does not want me to have such an answer, because then I would take decisions I make in this area of my life less seriously.
