Team Rocket is way more than "petty crimes" I'd say: for one they're one of the darkest teams in the games. FR/LG hold up as some of the best games in the franchise (as with Gen 3 in general), for one they are said to 'disown' and do possibly horrendous stuff to Pokémon deemed useless or unimportant/weak. In Lavender Town they provide some of the darkest aspects of any Pokémon game: they hold Mr. Fuji hostage in Pokémon Tower after coldheartedly murdering the mother of a Cubone in an attempt to steal the young Pokémon for money. This causes the town to sink into despair and the souls of the ghost Pokémon in the tower to grow restless, angry, and thirsty for vengeance with STRAIGHT-UP POSSESSING the channelers that work there, attacking the people that go up the tower, and the ghost of the mother Marowak unable to move on to the afterlife. Saffron City has the entire town on lockdown with people trapped in their homes as they stand guard, keeping trainers off-limits of the gym, and holding the entirety of Silph Co. hostage in an attempt to force them to merge with them so they can manipulate the world and take control through their products. You actually see hwo this affects the employees with them being scared, multiple hiding, many of them reduced to tears as they realize the hopelessness and inevitable downfall of their fate if they dare try to leave. Giovanni holds the president on the upper floor and is trying to force him to sign, and Giovanni himself is actually a very intimidating character. He provides an actual challenge and also gives you a sense of unease about the danger. The plot twists in this game are also incredible such as how the game reveals Giovanni as the eighth gym leader which people take for granted now but man, was it powerful on your first playthrough, and he actually develops as a character as he loses to you realizing that perhaps his ways were wrong as he calls off Team Rocket, disbanding them and devoting his life to something better

Kinda crazy how Pokémon went from mafia bosses and galaxy level threats to a weirdo fanbase simping over a teenager. Makes me think that genwunners, or really just people who think the games have been horrible since gen 5 aren’t that wrong
