As a Saiyan,it's probably that Goku has a different instinct,than humans do,about being a parent...so...it appears to us humans as if he's a bad fathereven though he's trying his best even if he's essentially a saiyan that still grew up on eath,but without a father or a mother of his own to learn parenting from them,excluding Grampa Gohan,who was there during Gokus essential developmental years,before the monster killed him and having Goku from then on live all alone in the Wilderness...so...it ain't fully Gokus fault that he appears as a bad father even if he isn't,since he basically died to save Gohan in the Saiyan Saga,when Gohan was kidnapped by Raditz...and yes his time being dead makes him look as a bad father also...as well as that he was almost too late when the fight with the Saiyans started...but just remember that HE WAS FUKEN DEAD AND THAT HE HAD TO BLITZ THROUGH A MILLION MIKES TO GET BACK TO THE OVERWORLD... Then yes...after the battle with Vegeta,he was Injured and Gohan had left before he could recover,but the second Goku did recover,he was off to Namek,to be with Gohan,while praparing himself in the meantime,with training,on his way there,which allowed him to again SAVE GOHAN...as a Father he is...and yes during the Android saga he was absent at first,because of being on Yardrat,recovering from Frieza...and then after having arrived back to Earth,he tried spending time with Gohan...even if with training in preparation for the Androids,at least he wanted Gohan to be safe,which kinda helped Gohan be so,when Goku had effectively caught the Heart Virus that had put him out for a while...and after having returned back to dunctionality,Goku then just basically spent a full year in TROST and thought that Gohan was indeed stronger than him and just like him,because if how he basically couldn't have spent time with him till then because if all of what I had mentioned...so yes it was his Fault Cell ended up being like that sttong that Goku then after Piccolo had informed him of how Gohan truely is...that Goku then took over the responsibility of his action of giving Cell the Semzu beant,that he was willing to sacrefice himself for Gohan... And even helped Gohan from beyond on occasions like the Final Kamehameha with Cell...so he should be still considered as a parent that cares...and the rest of Buu and DBS sagas you've already mentioned...so hereby I rest my case...

Being raised in solitary and being a smooth brain are not the same thing. Goku may have been naive but I've never seen him a dumbass - until Super lobotomized him into what you're describing yeah..

Exactly. Goku has been there for Gohan every time things get to a point it's to much for him. Saved him from Raditz, The Ginyu Force, Frieza, Cell's Planetary Destruction, and saved him from the inside of Super Buu. That's just in the canon stuff of DBZ, I don't think Toriyama was ever trying to make Goku a bad father, just a father that's trying his best to learn to be a dad when he never really had one growing up, besides Grampa Gohan before he died.

I feel like the reason he used the Abridged scenes is probably because that the 'Goku is a bad bad' "fans" are more familiar with abridged rather than yhe original

As far as the Senzu Bean to Cell goes, here's something that no one ever points out (whether because they want to ride the Goku Bad Dad circlejerk or they legitimately haven't thought about it); what have the last two big fights Goku has been in had in common? Goku backs genocidal jackhole up against the wall and then they try to blow up planet, Vegeta and Frieza have both tried this as a win con for their respective fights with Goku and Frieza even succeeded and nearly killed Goku as a result; and who's DNA is in Cell? If you guessed both Vegeta and Frieza you would win the solid gold kewpie doll. So Goku had to figure Cell would probably try that if Gohan beat him through attrition, and if Cell tried to nuke Earth there's no guarantee that Gohan could stop it, hidden power or not, so Goku put the pieces in place to force out Gohan's hidden power and annihilate Cell in one decisive blast. For those that said everyone should have bumrushed Cell and prison-stomped him, that would not have worked since Cell was WAY too powerful and Cell even said that if they tried that, boom goes the planet immediately. Spirit Bomb? Cell knows about it and would just merc Goku too fast for him to make one strong enough... Edit: Thx for the ❤

Since you didn't mention Goten.... Goku was dead for seven years before coming back for one day and meeting Goten, and he had no idea Goten even existed. Goku wasn't allowed to *visit* the living world for all that time, of course, but he never talked to them thru King Kai? Or Baba? Not once for seven years did he even bother to check on his family?? Unless you count the Bojack movie, then that's one time. Because Gohan was in a martial arts tournament. And then seven years later he comes back to life for one day. Because there's a martial arts tournament....
