Iconic; If something or someone is considered iconic, they're very influential, recognisable, and revered.
If you had to pick ten westerns that would typify what iconic westerns were and are all about, in other words those that are top of mind. Which would you pick? I’ve had a go at this task today. Not an easy process, everyone will have their own opinions on this, let me know yours in the comments. No right or wrong answers. For decades westerns went through a natural development, representing various elements of the west. I won’t even get into the sub genres today.

I've seen all of these westerns and they're all really so iconic, that's impossible - to pick one best. They're all excellent!

The Searchers has to be the best. John Wayne was superb.

Hmmm. I usually agree with your choices, but how can you omit _The Good, the Bad and the Ugly_ ?

I prefer "Red River" & "The Man Who Shot Liberty Valance"...but I agree with the commentator immediately-below, the most iconic Western is "The Searchers".

Can't argue with any of these films, although the list could have gone on and included Rio Bravo, High Plains Drifter, Gunfight at the OK Corral, Hombre, The Long Riders, One Eyed Jacks etc.....

I believe to be an iconic western, it would have to be one of the John Wayne/John Ford movies. So, even though I love Stagecoach, I think it would be The Searchers.

I would recommend "The Hanging Tree," starring Gary Cooper. It's my favorite western of all time.

High noon is fine as a life lesson, everyone is your friend until you actually need a friend, but there's so many good westerns, so many brilliant

The only one you didn't mention would be the original True Grit. For all it's flaws you can't imagine an montage of great western movie scenes that doesn't include the meadow shootout.

Hard to choose the most iconic western. Each of these in the video have their own quality of greatness. I'll just say that western movies are the most iconic movie genre.

Stagecoach (original), Shane, High Noon, Red River, Winchester 73, Ride the High Country, The Searchers, Magnificent Seven (original), True Grit (original), Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid. The only one of yours or mine I haven’t seen is Forgiven, which is on my list.

If we subscribe to your definition of iconic (outstanding, representative and influential) then I'd have to go for an earlier Western (to be influential). My pick would be Stagecoach (1939). It is like the Grand Hotel (1932) of Westerns, focusing as it does on the many characters in the Stagecoach as individuals, with unique backstories and enhancements to the overall movie. Since Iconic also means 'representative of the ideas/opinions of a particular age, its now stereotypical depiction of Indians is iconic in that it represents the narrow-minded focus of America in that day and age.

- Little Big Man 1974 - not the most iconic but amazing- Dustin Hoffman The film is an historical biography of a fictional life lived in the wild west during many historical events, but the first American film where American Indians were 1st shown as a humanity NEVER shown in film before. with Chief Dan George - great film I promise! - agree with you, loved winchester 73 and most of the other films you listed.

People seem to be citing their favorites. But if you mean TRULY iconic, classic good vs. evil, themes of redemption, rugged western settings, etc. The MOST iconic is Shane. Honorable mentions to Stagecoach and The Searchers. (btw, I consider Liberty Valance to be the best western movie, but it's not "iconic" in that sense).

It would be so easy to name top 10 westerns with only John Wayne movies. Your list was excellent but, admittedly, Shane and High Noon were not among my favorites. There are so many poignant others that I enjoyed far more that represented the genre.
