@felixbelanger26596 жыл бұрын
I'm a metallurgist, and while casting is not my field of expertise, I doubt that it's a Zinc-Carbon alloy (it would probably segregate). This is probably a Zinc alloy with 8-10% Aluminium and 0.5-1% Copper which is fairly common. This is used because it gives an excellent finish as-cast. I know they sometimes use graphite molds, but I think that high Carbon percentage is simply from manipulation of the part... Other methods could help determine the true alloy
@mortician19906 жыл бұрын
You don't think zinc carbide and a zamak alloy contributing the Cu and Al would explain this? I would be very surprised if 25%+ of a carbon containing alloy was purely from impregnation of a graphite mold. I do not work with zinc alloys, and don't know whether zinc carbide would precipitate out of solution on the other hand.
@felixbelanger26596 жыл бұрын
Yeah I don't think it's from the mold... If it had been cut with a diamond cutter it would explain it, but they said it was EDM, which rules this out. I doubt there's any carbide as it would give no advantage and be a real pain for finishing. Looking at the structure it's also possible that it's Zinc foam and that the gas used is something like Carbon monoxide, but I'm still not sure how it would register here (so I still think that it's from touching it)
@mortician19906 жыл бұрын
Felix Belanger Foam is a good conclusion, that could explain some of that oxygen in there. I don't think I've ever seen that much oxygen in a EDS of an alloy before.

Um, yeah, but you do realize more people hitting 100k = Google making more money? So no, it doesn't make sense.
@worthless_opinion7 жыл бұрын
Seriously? Google owns KZbin. They have these things called ads that they make revenue off of. More people getting more views = more profit for Google. Understand?
@worthless_opinion7 жыл бұрын
Oh, so you think 100% of ad revenue goes to KZbinrs? Lol, you're delirious.
@Steamrick7 жыл бұрын
@Filip Andersson: Yeah, if I was KZbin I'd want to save some money there, too. The material savings aren't all that big - especially as they need to switch to a two-step process to plate the front of the silver-button, which increases process costs at that point - but they also save a nice chunk of change by only polishing the visible part of the button. @Worthless Opinion: It's public knowledge that KZbin does a 45/55 ad revenue split with the content creators, with the youtubers getting the 55%. Still a pretty good deal, I think. I mean, what are the alternatives? Facebook? You won't get any money from those guys.

Close.. The x-ray spectrometer actually reads the EMITTED xrays from the sample. The electron beam causes electrons to leave their energy level and then other electrons "fall" into the emptied energy level. this 'falling' causes photon emission (x-ray).

I don't think they are the 'injection points' at all... they look like ejection pin locations (where the part is 'pushed' out of one half of the mould).
