Public broadcasting is a very important tool for fighting disinformation. Unfortunately, our policy makers feel that they need to be loyal to the disinformation in order to be elected. That prevents us from addressing important problems like universal healthcare, campaign finance reform and global warming. The credible information from public broadcasting doesn’t reach the public equitably. Most of the consumers of public content are liberal progressives. Conservatives have been excused from participation. That is unfortunate. We can not have a meaningful conversation if everyone invited sees the world through the same lens. Archie needs to be considered part of the family. If public broadcasting would cultivate a diverse audience of moderates who want a more complete understanding, people will learn and grow and be less vulnerable to disinformation. They will get the opportunity to listen to a different perspective, which is almost non-existent in for profit media. And if the politicians don’t feel the need to respect disinformation, they might be able to address global warming. So, what I am asking for is public broadcasting to save the world.

I wonder, though, how would hiring work for public broadcasting? I assume the state would still have some role in there. So as they cannot influence what is made/shown through payment, they can still influence it by only hiring like-minded people. I know advertisers in private broadcasting has this influence too, though.

Depends on the state and the institution I suppose. I know for Australia we recently had the Prime Minister name the chairperson of the board of our public broadcaster. The person they chose was not on the shortlist provided by the independent selection panel. They can only recommend this appointment to the Governor General , who makes the actual appointment, but as with most things this is usually just a formality. www.theguardian.com/media/2019/feb/28/ita-butftrose-appointed-chair-of-the-abc There was, and continues to be plenty of public upset about the level of influence our current government is exerting over our public broadcaster. Multiple organisations and political parties have ongoing campaigns to protect the ABC from direct government influence. They're not explicitly making appointments for the most part though. As usual with politics, it's more influence than direct control. Keeping them at arms length is an ongoing effort with an uncooperative government.

@@PEGSInstitute fair enough. Guess it'll always be part of the issue. At least there is public/democratic influence in public broadcasting.

In the US, there is a Corporation for Public Broadcasting. The board is appointed by the president and confirmed like a judge. With some of the board appointed by Republicans, it is a mystery why the content is so liberally biased. Our public broadcasting used to be really good but as our nation polarized, I guess they had to pick a side. I don’t know what needs to be done. I am sure that better regulation is required. I really hope that public broadcasting can be improved to serve everyone better.

"A public broadcaster is that it is the only type of broadcaster that can put its audience’s interests first, " In my country the public broadcaster(s) tend to put the interests of their employees first and of friendly (leftwing) politicians second. The commercial broadcasters on the other hand are forced to be responsive to changing consumer needs and preferences.
@PEGSInstitute Жыл бұрын
Assuming that they're responsive to what consumers want, not that they provide whatever and consumers don't have alternative choices, though. Even if they are responding to what consumers want, they can only respond yo what the majority wants. Minority interests can't be accommodated for in the same way. Catering for the minority is less of a concern for public broadcasters.
@JSK010 Жыл бұрын
@@PEGSInstitute "they can only respond to what the majority want" Your own youtube channel is actually a perfect refutation of this. You are operating on a commercial for profit platform, as a private entity (not publically owned), making content for a small minority of viewers interested in left-leaning content.

That's not the same as a public/private broadcaster with a limited availability of audience and airtime, though, is it? KZbin is theoretically infinite in how much content it can produce and broadcast, so long as the profit is there. A radio or TV network has a limited broadcast range, which limits their audience, and they also only have limited time in a day to broadcast. They can't cater to minority interests in the same way as KZbin creators can. If they put on minority-interest content in their prime time slot, then they're going to get less income from advertisers.
