I found, through personal experience as I was not born and brought up as a Muslim, the KEY is you have to LET the Quran to talk to you directly. You approach the Quran without any preconceived ideas, then you find it is magical that Allah is talking to you as you read and study, he opens your heart and mind. You will conclude that the Quran is truly the only book of Allah. It is clear and complete! May Allah Bless us. Peace.

i spend 5 yrs in my childhood in Madrisa Memorising quran & was bored out of it ,bt then my life changed & learned English & i went to UK for studies ,then heard Dawkins & Christopher Hitchens & Sam harris views and wn i ws 25 turned back to Quran & its bn 5yrs i spend atleast 3hrs learning smthing abt it, i m fascinated by it ,heard Mr Lumbard a month ago & realy appreciate ur efforts sir ,i love the way u describe Quran in a very unique & fresh way.

I hear a lot of discussion and musing about what the Qur’an is without citing the Book itself, and I am guilty of this myself. I find it more than a little troubling that your approach here seems so novel to me. You have demonstrated the incomparable way that Allah treats any matter He chooses to address in His Qur’an. I have always find it odd that the discussion of what the Quran is does not begin with what the Quran says it is. Even among Muslims, one usually begins with credal definitions and rarely plunges into the hundreds of verses about the Quran itself.

I am trying to read through the Study Quran, which is such a beautiful book with so much guidance, but as a total outsider to Islam, a major problem I am having is understanding what exactly the Quran is and why it takes on the poetic forms that it does. You should read Understanding Islam, by Frithjof Schuon. He has a chapter devoted to how to understand the Quran that is very insightful. The gist of it is that the Quran does not take the form of a typical literary work as you would expect a human person to produce, where beauty of language and integrity of form and content takes priority over everything. The Quran came from God directly, but the Word of God is too great to be confined within the limits of human understanding. If the Quran seems imponderable, at times terse, even trite occasionally (or seemingly so), not to mention unfocused (again, seemingly so), it is precisely because our human abilities are too paltry to contain the entirety of the Message that is inscribed on the Eternal Tablet which is the source of all revelation, and so it is as if the text is trying to escape the limitations of written language at almost every step of the way. Because of this, the Quran cannot be understood directly. You need the traditional commentaries, at the very least, as well as the aid of God himself, who will remove veils of meaning from the text at his discretion. Your approach to the Quran should not be one of "literary enjoyment", but mystical awe and in a certain respect fear as well. Reading the Quran should in itself be an act of prayer.

The Quran (literally meaning "the recitation"; also romanized as Qur'an or Koran) is the central religious text of Islam, which Muslims believe to be a revelation from God (Allah). It is widely regarded as the finest work in classical Arabic literature. The Quran is divided into chapters (surah in Arabic), which are then divided into verses (ayah). Muslims believe that the Quran was verbally revealed by God to Muhammad through the angel Gabriel (Jibril), gradually over a period of approximately 23 years, beginning on 22 December 609 CE, when Muhammad was 40, and concluding in 632, the year of his death. Muslims regard the Quran as the most important miracle of Muhammad, a proof of his prophethood, and the culmination of a series of divine messages that started with the messages revealed to Adam and ended with Muhammad. The word "Quran" occurs some 70 times in the text of the Quran, although different names and words are also said to be references to the Quran. According to the traditional narrative, several companions of Muhammad served as scribes and were responsible for writing down the revelations. Shortly after Muhammad's death, the Quran was compiled by his companions who wrote down and memorized parts of it. These codices had differences that motivated the Caliph Uthman to establish a standard version now known as Uthman's codex, which is generally considered the archetype of the Quran known today. There are, however, variant readings, with mostly minor differences in meaning. The Quran assumes familiarity with major narratives recounted in the Biblical scriptures. It summarizes some, dwells at length on others and, in some cases, presents alternative accounts and interpretations of events. The Quran describes itself as a book of guidance. It sometimes offers detailed accounts of specific historical events, and it often emphasizes the moral significance of an event over its narrative sequence. The Quran is used along with authentic and reliable hadith to interpret sharia law. During prayers, the Quran is recited only in Arabic. Someone who has memorized the entire Quran is called a hafiz. Some Muslims read Quranic ayah (verse) with elocution, which is often called tajwid. During the month of Ramadan, Muslims typically complete the recitation of the whole Quran during tarawih prayers. In order to extrapolate the meaning of a particular Quranic verse, most Muslims rely on the tafsir.

It is an ism ishāra and is undertsood both ways in the tradition. Arabic 101 teaches us that is means "this" and not "that". Living and working with Arabic teaches us the meaning is dependent upon the context. Every Arabist knows that.

The classical Islamic position is that the Quran is the direct word of God conveyed through the Prophet Muhammad (Peace be upon him and upon all the prophets).

Yes that is how the Qur'an objectively presents itself. Muhammad doesn't say a single word in it, the book is addressed to him then early Muslims and the whole world, the direct speech of God. A complete contrast to what the Bible contains and how it presents itself (usually as 3rd person narratives about religious history written by men)
