I'm in the same boat. Just changed my inserts from the stock 22gr, to 50gr, and it's still not enough.< (did this before discovering RF) Plus cut arrows short for more speed. Gonna cut all the fletchings off for bare shaft tune with test kit and hopefully find some weight/ extensions and see how it goes. FAAAK!

I enjoy your content. I did this before I seen your channel. What works for me. Learned a lot from shooting traditional. Last year I setup a 70# bow with a 300 spine arrow. 1st I got the bow timing and cam lean correct on a draw board. Centered my rest. I added the brass insert and field point up front and began shooting the bare shaft. I continued to cut down the arrow length till the bare shaft flew straight and true. Fletched arrow and bare shaft shot the same. Shot 2 fletched arrows, 1 with a field point and 1 with a fixed blade and minutely adjusted for a same impact. I did it because I knew it was possible. Unfortunately most bow shops will not tune your bow to this extent.

Clay Hayes has a great trick that I used to figure out my recurve draw length. Watch his video on determining draw length. If you don't want to watch another video (but we know you do): get a full length shaft; slap a nock, insert, and field tip on it (sans tune); take some blue painter's tape and stick it to the first few inches of your arrow; mark your carbon to carbon measurements on the tape with sharpy; go to a range; set up you phone on video with a tripod/stable surface pointed at the riser when you're set to shoot (or have a friend film you, I don't have those so I use a tripod); draw your ruler arrow as if you are going to shoot down range; aim; hold; and fire. Watch the video and look at what measurement is in front of the riser. Bingo, bango you have your arrow measurement. The reason you actually shoot the arrow is so you can watch what your bow hand is doing and take your reading where the arrow will not cut you if you flip your little fingies around.

I find a general rule is if you go carbon to carbon as your draw length you’ll be safe. As measuring standards is to deepest part of the grip plus 1.75” so carbon to carbon as draw length will be 1.75” further forward than the deepest part of the grip. Usually ends up close to the riser. As you said nock adds length 1/4” on average so you’re 2”. Then an insert well 1/4-1” depending. That is a good ball park when I get asked a lot how long. If you make the arrow at your draw length carbon to carbon you will in 99% of cases be in front. But the usual question I’ve been asked by people is my arrow to short. If you feel unsafe or lack confidence it’s too short, simple. Use some commons sense. Don’t ask someone if they’re going to be happy to shoot that short of an arrow it’s about if you’re going to be happy shooting that short of an arrow. Just my 2c

If u want to shoot tighter groups with no left or right strays then get the EZV Sight. RF has a couple of videos on it. Left or right strays means brisket hits which r bad, or abdominal hits which r double bad. Your brain will learn to focus on centering the sight on your target/animal of choice & u will become a better hunter with shorter blood-trails. Isn't the goal to dispatch so u don't have to look & search to recover? The best hunting vids r the 1's where u get to see the animal expire in an ethical & lethal way. Much more gratifying in the long run.

Everyone just lost another 10fps or 25gr of front weight to accommodate the weaker longer shaft. While I get the point "don't bleed", a proper grip will negate the safety concern. But If you know you have a really high grip by all means plan accordingly. Shorter arrows maintain higher FOC. This rabbit hole has a lot of turns. Keep in mind RF provides guidance not a map. Its great content, but don't be afraid to explore new things and fail.
@josephtreadlightly5686
@josephtreadlightly5686 4 жыл бұрын
My experience is that people don't want to turn their poundage down to achieve proper arrow flight. Proper arrow flight is needed so when the animals move b4 impact that when u smash the shoulder through the thoracic cavity with an adult broadhead that the arrow continues out through the other side. That's the goal.
@TheOutdoorMentors
@TheOutdoorMentors 4 жыл бұрын
@@josephtreadlightly5686 only reason to turn poundage down is to increase accuracy, decrease nerves, etcetera. Unless you've already built arrows that end up being weak and you're trying to fix a mistake. Poundage has nothing to do with arrow flight. The bow must be in tune. The arrow must be in tune. The shooter must be in tune. Or at least stay out of the way of the bow witch is a machine that is completely consistent when not affected by human errors. Increased arrow weight will decrease bow noise but also greatly effect a shafts dynamic spine. Jusr wish RF would have touched on how a longer shaft is weaker and needs a stiffer spine to maintain the same dynamics.
@TheOutdoorMentors
@TheOutdoorMentors 4 жыл бұрын
@@josephtreadlightly5686 read some Ashby files or watch more RF cause "proper arrow flight" effects broadhead flight and its inability to steer a shaft off course. Arrow spine, FOC, broadhead design and the arrows momentum coefficient is what determines whether it makes a exit or not. "A object in motion tends to stay in motion until it meets a force greater than its force" ))))====> #science ...i think you get it and maybe just worded it wrong.

@@TheOutdoorMentors Poundage down due to age, new high-tech bow setup & close range shooting opportunities. Shooting the wrong spine when shooting 70 or over will hurt your arrow flight. I don't recommend high FOC with a 350 spine unless u meet the criteria.
@TheOutdoorMentors
@TheOutdoorMentors 4 жыл бұрын
@@josephtreadlightly5686 ok, congratulations for knowing your limits. Thats a great reason to turn down your weight. But you don't have to limit yourself to a 350 spine. Im shooting a 250 spine and only shoot 60# myself. Need to pick the shaft for your build first. Sirius Archery has a great adult arrow chart for picking proper spines. For others who will read this know that Turning a bow down more than 5# can greatly decrease the preload on your limbs and decrease its efficiency. Example: a 60# limb bow will shoot harder than a 70# limb that's been backed out to 60#.

When shooting from an elevated position,such as a treestand or elevated blind, would you compensate for the exit or is this determined on which part of the animal you are shooting at. for example ,hard quartering away, broadside, elevation ca. 20 feet. I`m asking because of hunting European Hogs the last 25 yrs. I´ve learned it makes a big difference on Fallow deer,Red deer,and of course the Hogs. Make sure u plan ahead since most quivers won't hold a micro diameter shaft w/o a little DIY help on your quiver or the new Conquest quiver. U can however build a very lethal 29" arrow from nock to insert with a 300 spine. If u want lighter yet due to lower poundage like 60 pounds u can get by with a 350 spine but I recommend the Valkyrie broadhead system with the centerpin system like a Jag so u can shoot an adult arrow with high FOC performance.

Long story short I bought Easton fmj 5mm arrows. The more research I do idk if I made good choice but I have them. They came with Easton hit insert. I have 4 letters to describe them. So I bought 75g stainless steel half out insert so it feels to me like head not pounding directly into arrow shaft. Why fmj 5mm. First though was sectional density. Then layers make strength. But 2nd one was shot out window by all the broken arrows I've seen on internet. But now inserts in and I'll be trying to set up new bow and tune arrows. Wondering if shortening shaft from rear will have large effect on arrow spine flex during tuning of arrow/ head combinations. They are full length , 33" I believe. I shoot 29 draw but I don't see anything wrong with shooting long arrow other than a shorter arrow may flex less and a slightly higher foc on shorter arrow.

As a general life rule, don’t trust guys who wear visors. I’m going to have to reassess that rule now. I’ve been shooting adult arrows before I knew I was shooting adult arrows. Now I have one of those bows with training wheels on it and I’m not sure how to tune arrows for it. Thanks for you help.

Curious, what reason is there for cutting your arrows?
@slacknor
@slacknor 4 жыл бұрын
The shorter the arrow the better the F.O.C. And full length arrows will make the spine weaker. But as mentioned don’t lose a digit!
@mortenjacobsen5673

For compound bow, absoluttely nothing. Even if you build your arrow to the perfect foc its negated by the 3rd law of newton when it passes the arrow rest, so the front node of the arrow is gona react according to the shelf type, you can cut to avoid more mass to gain som speed but that balance out in the speed vs mass on impact/penetration debate where again the foc is a static messure of weight distribution in theory, where the dynamic spine of the shaft in flight is what stabilise the spin around the center of mass, fleatching help reduce the energi required so more speed is more drag since vanes dont caus lift. And once you cut you canr go back. And if your gona cut why use a spine chart at all? Its reduses the amount of guess work or (spit balling) i guess, any ways if you set up the bow to your lenght and draw weight etc the power should be almost equal for eatch shoot so the shaft might allready be perfect ish design with dollars of research behind it... Maybe? You might want to considered that cutting might caus an uneven edge and create woble

Guy at the bow shop just strongly suggested I get Easton FMJs, he was talking about how much better micro shaft arrows are and that Easton FMJs are probably the best. What do you think? I was surprised when his face twisted when I said I was trying to increase my total arrow weight north of 550gr., he said that was too much and unnecessary unless hunting big game.

Shouldn't have to wait over night I used the bohning cool flex low hot melt..its for carbon arrows put it on and run the end under cold water and it's ready to shoot..and if you wanna clip the weighted insert down or add weight you can do this within minutes..I just learned this recently cause I was waiting over night for the super glue to dry and I could never get em back out so I'd ruin the arrow...I just wanted to pass this along have fun

Bob Gnarly yes I’m sure they are ready now but with it almost a 100 degrees outside and almost dark I will wait till morning when it’s cooler and so I don’t have to worry about mosquitoe biting me and send a arrow to the next county

Had to laugh. MY son saw me shoot at an broad target a few years ago and about had a stroke. He said that the distance from my outstretched pointy finger was microscopically close to the broad head and said it was a miracle i still had the finger. He adjusted how i hold the bow and lengthened my arrows in case i fell back to bad old habits. 😅

That will change the spine of the arrow. U might have shot a 300 spine in the riser but adding 2+ inches will probably change the spine of the arrow.

Not probably, it will, even thou the lenght is the same, a change in broad head will change the dynamic spine even if you match grains

10,2 x26=265,2 so you need 85point to react the 350 grains recomend as minimum (probably, consult bow maker, manual for recomendation) so if your gona cut them there on the light side

Love the ranch fairy! Those heavy arrows though I can’t get by how slow they are. I’m hunting white tails and with their super quick reaction speed I don’t feel you can shoot past 20 yds with heavy arrows like that, the deer just move too much before the arrow gets there. I went to a smaller diameter/heavier arrow and kept my rage’s, they have more punch but are still fast
