Tihai comes from a deeply subconscious area from our mind. As our heartbeats are in 2-2 structure (lub-dub), subconsciously we are very much comfortable with compositions that are of 2-2 or 4-4 structures, or what we called a chatusra jati structure. So, the smallest iteration of playing a piece and landing on SAM naturally becomes 2+1 = 3.

Tihai is an ornamentation that marks the end of a sentence , an idea, an improvisation. The reason it is three is because 3 has a natural balance of length. 2 is too short, 4 is too long. It is just like a three legged table is always stable - the legs will always be in a plane even if they are unequal.

i read this somewhere, that the 3 repeats - is because - 3 structural repetitions makes a trend... for instance if we say something once and the second time, the mind immediately wants to hear it one more time to ensure that the trend is complete and it is a full stop post that... so once we've heard it thrice, the 4th does not feel like an alert - because the mind has already seen it thrice and the fourth is seen as nothing strange :) there's also a saying in Kannada called "moorakke muktaya" - which loosely translated means "if you do it thrice, it is deemed complete" ...something to connect this proverb to :) tihaai's

तिहाई वेदो से सम्बन्धित है। "शांति पाठ " और अन्य अनुष्ठानों में अंत में ईश्वर के नाम तीन बार लेकर समापन किया जाता है। चुकी उस्ताद जी ने ध्रुपद और पखावज की बात की है,तो ध्रुपद और पखावज दोनो वैदिक संगीत है।

बिल्कुल सही कहा आपने तीन का महत्व हिंदू धर्म ग्रंथों मैं बताया गया है। सृष्टि के रचियता ब्रह्मा विष्णू महेश है और इन तीनों भगवान के अस्तित्व के चलते तीन का महत्व है। पखावज या मृदंग का जन्म मंदिरों से हुआ है और इसी कारण तीन का भारतीय संगीत का अत्यंत महत्व है। ये बात हमारे पूज्य गुरु पंडित किशन महाराज जी हमे बताई थी। इसके चलते मैं शेयर कर रहा हूं।
