I think that Lucas had more than one theme, though, including the one you identified: You can always choose to do what’s right Choices have consequences Redemption is possible Large events are shaped by the small moral choices of individuals People need to rely on each other Choosing will over machine programming (The Force vs The Empire)

The conclusion I drew decades ago is that Star Wars' fundamental theme is: HATE = BAD The villains, primarily the Sith, are full of hate and intolerance. So the moral of the story, intended for children, is that you make yourself a villain when you fill your life with hate. And, ultimately, you are placing yourself on the wrong side of history.

It has many themes but it's mostly about the struggle between opposites. Democracy vs Oppression, Conformity vs Rebellion, Dark vs Light, Love vs Hate, Integrity vs Corruption, selfishness vs selflessness, fear vs courage. Add in secondary theme of a family and there's your Star Wars.

And KZbin and Google isn't and Amazon isn't? I think there are far worse evils then Disney, its just they infiltrated your personal time and so it becomes obvious to you. But let me ask you, what is Amazon's business plan? They publish books, sell books, they are in super market industry of consumer products, they are also movie rental and publishing, they are also in IT and run most of the worlds servers. Trust me, I will take Disney any day of the week over some of these other companies.

if your proposal is correct - that the theme of star wars is the struggle of our programming and humanity - i think the sequel trilogy embodies a meta dramatic irony. it and its characters, ostensibly human in our suspension of disbelief, are used like cogs by their maker (disney). if we understand this suggested theme to be philosophically important, to be a truly meaningful commentary on the human condition, to *matter*, i think we're led to consider them the antithesis of star wars'/lucas' thesis. which raises the question: where is the synthesis?

In fine art, the theme is the central message the artist wishes to communicate to their audience, and this involves 'taking a position' or opinion on something. It involves a risk, that a) the audience will either miss the message (usually the artist's fault .i.e. David Lynch!) or b) the audience will simply not compassionate to or relate to the message at all (say, Tennessee Williams). The worst scenario, is where there is no intended theme, which usually amounts to the 'art as cultural terrorism', that Neitschze warned us about. Lucas was genuinely concerned that the audience would not relate to the principal theme of Star Wars, and that it would actually flop. For this reason he hired Alan Dean Foster, to write a budget sequel, should his fears be realized ('Splinter of the Mind's Eye'). I would suggest that the principal theme of the Star Wars trilogy is this: the incompleteness of mankind without the spiritual element; and a sub-theme: the need for conformity to a patriarchal hierarchy. My principal theme may be strengthened by reading what George Lucas has said about why he made Star Wars, and also by looking at the original 1977 poster used to promote the film. Luke has to fill, not only an spiritual/existential void in his existence, but also a socio-religious void, by choosing which body to adhere to: a poor Jedi spiritual hierarchy/college or a materially powerful techno-hierarchy (see climax of Empire Strikes Back). In addition, I believe that Star Wars is a close cousin of 'The Exorcist' (which Blatty and Friedkin described as being a film about a 'crisis of faith'). It does not surprise me that Star Wars and The Exorcist were the two highest grossing films of the 1970's. By his own admission, George Lucas said that he “put the Force into the movie in order to try to awaken a certain kind of spirituality in young people-more a belief in God than a belief in any particular religious system.” This is not far from William Peter Blatty's motive for writing The Exorcist, he said wanted to "help people who were struggling with their Faith." You could have a sizeable discussion about this, so I will leave it there.

Unfortunately its incredibly hard to pack that much detail into 30 second scenes these days. Source : my fiance. She tends to zone out during parts like this and ends up scrolling her phone, and missing the point. She's a few years younger than I am (about a 6 year age gap) and the difference when it comes to that kinda stuff can be astounding. Point is, 30 seconds packed with content became the exception rather than the norm, and cinema, as well as the average attention span, is suffering for it. I dare anyone born post 2000 watch the OG Planet of the Apes and get back the same energy, and actually pay attention to it, without being bored halfway through.

I think it's why, despite it's flaws, I did manage to enjoy "Rogue One", as compared to the Sequel Trilogy, and "Andor" is definitely a step up in genuinely good storytelling; it's different, but in a way that is complimentary and not the constant feeling that everything is a rough draft that was put to screen before any editing of the screenplay even took place.

I generally agree with your analysis of Star Wars on all your videos. But I really have to disagree here. The theme is family. George Lucas himself has said so. You could write the exact same 6 movies and have them set in ancient Egypt, or a high fantasy world like Middle Earth and it wouldn't change a thing. You'd lose the spaceships of course, but they can easily be replaced with ships on the water, or horse and carriage, and the core of the movie would still be there. You are focusing too much on the Empire. The Empire was purposefully made to be cold and robotic, to show that their world is not one you'd want to live in. To show that they don't care about the individual, and that they don't value life the way good guys do.

6:31 - That's simple. Since war is one of the most basic types of social, political, economic, cultural conflicts to understand and explain that's why that's the only problem presented. Disney wouldn't dare expose the other kinds of business ventures they're into, they'd expose themselves by stating that in a film. Even if they exposed their own business in a film I doubt the audience would understand as Disney films tend to pander to the lowest common denominator of Cinema fans.

@@meechie9z a ton. I love Rey’s heroines journey and the theme of the sequels in general about examining legacy, what blood means for family, and so on. Love Finn, and Poe even if I want more from Finn. Kylo Ren is such an incredible character who serves as the perfect foil for Rey. And Rey has an amazing heroine’s journey that pairs very well with Luke’s hero journey in the OT. I love how Luke was handled, I thought it was an incredibly clever idea to use Luke to examine the Jedi’s legacy after the full story of the OT and PT was told and the battle of Crait is my all-time favorite Star Wars scene and, imo, an intelligent way to end Luke’s arc. He starts as a Jedi with nonviolence and he ends with nonviolence. Palpatine’s return is whatever, but I love his zombie form. Kylo killing his father, something Luke would not do, to solidify himself in the dark side is brilliant. Rey’s resurrection is a great way to cap off the saga all about the force and life.
