What is the Truth? Do we recognize it when we hear it? Pontius Pilate, a confused leader, in a 2000 year old conversation (yet strangely relevant today) acknowledges his inability to do it by himself. In this touching excerpt of "The passion of the Christ", the eternal words of Jesus echo: "Those who listen to my voice, listen to the Truth."

I like how this movie portrays Pilate in a sympathetic light. He was an honourable, good man, you can see he admired Jesus and wanted to do the right thing. When the Jews yell out “crucify him,” Pilate looks genuinely shocked and horrified. But he was tired of the Jews, and crushed by the weight of his responsibility under the most powerful empire the worlds ever seen. None of us could claim to have done any different. How many times do we wash our hands of things we know we should or shouldn’t do because it seems too hard in the moment. We are lucky to have such a loving and endlessly forgiving God.

Agreed. I enjoy this version of Pilate too. It’s always important to remember he had the secular authority given to him from above (be it Imperator Tiberius or Yahweh Himself) and thus had the authority to free Jesus. The Gentiles and the Jews murdered Jesus as was prophesied but Pilate was not an evil man. Just a man doing His job (and killing one innocent man over a possible rebellion or his own head/career by the Emperor as he was already in hot water with him) Brilliant acting and brilliant writing. They could have portrayed Pilate many ways but this is the best.

Well... Jews (not correctly but fuck facts) believed in 7 heavens above so rationally believed there are other worlds up there (Lewis wrote that inspired shits in his Narnia books). But I think it makes us feel good to hear that sentence because it seems there is something bigger than the kingdoms in our world. We all wants bigger, greater, stronger. If he said "My kingdoms is bigger than yours.", it is full of ego and little bit of desperation (in his situation). But to say "not from this world".... Jesus (in this movie) was beautiful, he was not crazy, he was beaten up the moment, he was tall and with a beautiful deep voice, innocent eyes. Plus we watch this video because we kinda believe him. Which makes his words big. If he was an ugly guy and he said it being angry or worse drunk, we would not see it the same way (although the same words). Btw I think this actor is perfect for the role of Pontius. And that's the last reason: It was acted! Real life would look somehow different. Every line in movies seem perfect.

Isn't clear in your ears that Christ spoke the word "veritatem" and Pilate said "veritas"? That's Latin for "truth". Of course, Koine Greek was used in that region of the Roman Empire, but because it's difficult to use Koine (the Greek today is different from Koine) the priest translator used Latin, Hebrew and Aramaic.

Thank goodness Mel Gibson, a devout Catholic, was in charge of this film. @Sheik Yerbouti The definition of evidence: the available body of facts or *information* indicating whether a belief or proposition is true or valid. Words are evidence. You never heard of the variations of evidences, such as historical evidence or corroborative evidence? Those types of evidences can consist of words. I could provide these evidences, but if you don't accept words as evidence, and if it doesn't matter to you, then it'll be all for naught. Saying that it doesn't matter to you just sounds like an excuse for you to stick to your godless belief, and not to seek truth. I'd argue that you do have something riding on it though, whether you believe it or not.. Takes a lot of faith to be an atheist.

Yes, but this clip shows the essence of God; and mans search for the answer to the biggest question of what is life all about. Is God real? Why are we here alive on Earth? What is Truth? What is made up? As an intelligent man who understood power, authority, and the outcomes of questions and our choices in answering such questions. Pilate isn't coming across as flippant but is sincerely soul searching on a deep level. unlike Herod did in the scene when Jesus was presented before him.

Pilate was in a very difficult situation where he couldn't see a favourable decision anyway. He knew Jesus was innocent and definitely didn't deserve death but he was governing the troublesome province of Judea. There was a rebellion before and he didn't want anymore unrest or he would be made accountable to Caesar. At the end, he succumbed to the pressure of the Jewish leaders.

What's interesting in this scene is that it starts off with Pilate speaking to Jesus in Aramaic, the native tongue of Palestine, but then Jesus starts speaking to Pilate in Latin. Pilate's servants probably do not know Aramaic, but hearing what Jesus was saying in their native tongue of Latin would have probably given them something to think about.

The Bible doesn't say, but Nazareth where Jesus grew up was just five miles from Sepphoris, a respectable-sized town under significant Greco-Roman influence. It had shrines and gymnasiums and other gentile amenities that would be frowned upon in Jewish towns and villages. One theory is that Jesus actually lived comfortably in Nazareth with Joseph, his children, and Mary since there was plenty of housebuilding and carpentry business to be had in Sepphoris. Barring supernatural agencies, it's very possible that Jesus picked up conversational Greek and Latin while working for Roman clients there.

And to the original comment, Every single time it is said “the word of the lord” it speaks of him, because who was the word made flesh? Yeshua our messiah himself, which dwelt among us. So it’s definitely more than 55 times. The OT is the NT concealed, the NT is the OT revealed.

I love when they ask Jesus “where did you come from?!” And he just smiles and says nothing, because us believers know the truth and where he came from: “I am the beginning and the end”. “I am the alpha and omega”. You see the crucification of Jesus has a higher purpose to the story then just him dying for our sins. When he switched positions with Barabas that was one of the most powerful acts the Lord can do for us all; we are Barabas were all liers, thieves, and sinners, but God tells us “what greater love is more than dying for a friend”. Another part of this is when he was hung on the cross next to the two men; one of the men asked “Are you not the messiah of the world”? Free us from this pain; take us down from this cross”. The other man looked to God and knew he was already dead so he then tells Jesus, “Do not forget me, take me into your kingdom”. The Lord did not answer the man that denied him to be king, but did look to the faithful man and replied “I have prepared a place for you in paradise”. By this do we fallow Jesus and know that when we will die our sins are forgiven and know we will be welcomed into the kingdom of heaven or are we lovers of the word and ask to be taken down from the cross so we may not suffer anymore during this trial called life. Who do you choose? The Lord says “You cannot serve two masters”.

Interesting how Pilate handled the Jesus case compared to how Gallio (who was, incidentally, the brother of Seneca the Younger) handled the case of Paul in Corinth. The Jews had hardly finished with their charges against Paul when Gallio told them to judge the matter themselves. He saw through the Jews' efforts to rope him in by making the charge look political, when all it involved were "words and names, and your law." He then _immediately_ adjourned the court, and did not pay any more attention even when the Jews started to go violent (they beat up their synagogue leader Sosthenes in front of the judgment seat). To Gallio, Paul's case had already been treated with Roman justice as soon as he adjourned, whether Jewish insurrection or none. Corinth was a major Roman trading hub too. Paul had made converts not just among the Jews but also among the "God-fearing" Greeks and Gentile pagans. A Christian insurrection (Christianity at this point was still seen as a Jewish sect) in a big and important city such as Corinth would be as big a disaster as a Jewish insurrection in Jerusalem would have been.

Historians says Pilate was a ruthless prefect, and they can’t get their head around why he didn’t want to kill Jesus. I have a thought that he sensed how good Jesus was, and was strangely scared to have him killed because of this feeling. For a ruthless man to feel this around the Lord shows how holy Jesus is. That a killer would shrink from wanting to harm the Lord while not being aware of who was truly before him speaks volumes to me on who Jesus is.

I'm not a believer but this film is the grandest, most beautiful portrayal of the cultural/mythological foundations of western civilization. Every scene - like this - just radiates with the potency of myth and eternal philosophical questions. People who hate this film - because they're ignorant yet think themselves smart just because they're atheists - are just people who cannot watch anything regarding religion without flipping out. The violence? This is the Passion of the Christ its the story of his suffering for our sake. I'm amazed that people were so thrown off by the violence. The film is such a beautiful vision of Christ, his passion, suffering and universal love/empathy. The scene in which Paul cries because he realizes that he has denied Christ thrice and feels undeserving of his love always brings tears to my eyes. Not a big Mel Gibson fan but he knows how to import a story with the potency and mythological strength that it deserves (i'll pretend Braveheart never happened).

its cool you apreciate Christ's life and death this way. He did it for you, you know. He loves you very much, even if you don't believe in His Father, or His own divinity. maby you should see if His death actually ment something other than admerable love. maby we all realy did need a chance, and He gave it. please I'm begging you, give Him a chance? i meen, say there is no God, giving the belief a chance wont do any harm... but if there is a God, and He created us, gave us existence, then we screwed up so He alloud His only Son, and the 3rd Person of the Trinity in One God, to be born, live and die for our sins, our mistakes, and He did it for me, Knowing i would be raised to Believe and follow Him, but He also did it for you, knowing you may never even believe in Him. if there's even a chance all i said was true, you owe it to Him to find out for shure. i sudgest The Holy Roman Catholic Church. its the first christian church, instituted by Jesus Christ Himself, St. Peter was the first pope. but if you don't believe me you should do your own research. i promise you, on my life that God, the creator of heaven and earth, is real. And Jesus Christ, his only son, our Lord, is real. May you find the truth my friend. May God bless you, may His Holy Mother pray for you, (she is after all, the new Eve,the mother of all mankind, aka your heavenly mother) and may your guardian angel protect and watch over you.

Rogue Skywalker I do believe in him in some way. Its difficult for me to put into words. I have my doubts regarding, say, a specifically Christian or a specificially Muslim god. I've always been drawn to the christianity of the renaissance Anabaptists though. I feel like they - due to their compassion with the poor - were closer to god. Do you think a christian god would accept someone who finds inspiration and existential meaning in non-christian religions too? I'm afraid that becoming a christian would mean that i'd have to "cut off" part of the things in which i find meaning. Thanks so much for your kind words by the way. I always find that christians are some of the politest most easy going people in comment sections.

I think what I find most symbolic of this scene is that Pilate begins his questioning in the native tongue, but Jesus then questions him in Latin, making both Pilate and Abenander unsettled...because I am under the belief that Pilate sees him in this scene as just a Jewish insurrectionist. So to see his knowledge of the latin language, was probably surprising, and perhaps from the rumors they heard, a little creepy for them

Go do full research thoroughly through first so you will see or know the truth. It started with the "Y" not the "J". Follow up with the Jews Hebrew pronunciation -- to say the Messiah name correctly. I respect and honor the Jews' Messiah. Yeshua was born Jew in His own people. I love His name "Yeshua". Very amazingly beautiful & powerful when I heard about it. He is not white with blue eyes, sir. For Jacob and Joseph pronouncing "Ya'akov and Yosef". They were always started with the "Y" instead of the "J". Same people but different sounds. One day, all will speak ONLY one language ---> Hebrew, not any other languages, in heaven. On earth we all speaking different languages... because of disobedience and rebellious.

Genesis 11 5But the Lord came down to see the city and the tower the people were building. 6The Lord said, “If as one people speaking the same language they have begun to do this, then nothing they plan to do will be impossible for them. 7Come, let us go down and confuse their language so they will not understand each other.” 8So the Lord scattered them from there over all the earth, and they stopped building the city. 9That is why it was called Babelc -because there the Lord confused the language of the whole world. From there the Lord scattered them over the face of the whole earth.

All will be judge by G-d at His Judgment Day in the end. Who can deserve reward? If you do not know the truth 100%. No one can escape from His WRATH.

He was a coward. Instead of doing what was right and releasing Jesus he crumbled under pressure. He knew Jesus was blameless. He washed his hands and did not stood up for the truth or for an innocent man. We need more people that stand for what is right even in the face of affliction. Pilate missed a chance of being a hero in the Biblical story along with the man that helped Jesus carry the cross

But it was the Will of the Father that Jesus die for all mankind, so either way someone would have had to crucify him

Grassy Field Exactly someone would have done it but it did not have to be Pilate one of the culprits.

kevfoda You say coward, I say reasonable governor. He offered them Barabbus or Jesus and the will of the masses was met. For a Roman governor, he kept the peace pretty well.

kevfoda Also, why would Pilot give a fuck about some random Jew? You're thinking with your faith, not your brain. Put yourself in Pilot's position. You have no evidence of wrongdoing on Jesus' behalf, but there is a throng of people (his own people,[the Jewish religious authority] mind you) calling for his execution. You aren't a Christian (such a thing hardly exists at this point) you're pegan. would you rather have a riot break out or would you rather kill some unimportant peasant. Again, try to think with Pilot's responsibilities, timeframe, and emotion in mind. I wouldn't even question it. I'd execute the fucker without washing my hands.

Passion of Christ and Risen are some of my favorite movies. And this conversation alone could overcome many others in life. All who hear the truth hear his voice. It is as simple as that, nothing more. This is what I believe. I’m not telling everyone what or who to believe. That is all. Thanks for uploading. ❤️❤️❤️
