Yeah, that's the one I also thought of immediately when it comes to non-traditional fighting games. Especially with that presentation and the absolute baller Hideki Naganuma soundtrack. Like, goddamn, it deserves to be here! Here's a couple others I came across! Acceleration of Suguri 2 asks the question of "What if fighting game, but bullet hell?" Put two characters in a circular arena with a top-down view, give them a crapton of projectiles and set-up tools and see what happens. Meanwhile Beat Boxers tries combining fighting games with rhythm. Just have to attack to the rhythm of the beat, otherwise mostly recognizable. Both of these examples aren't that great though, imo. Very janky, not really balanced, the systems just aren't there yet, but very interesting explorations of that "what if" territory nonetheless.

Touhou Hisoutensoku is a p normal fighting game all things considered, with a couple of neat quirks that set it apart from other games that could land it in a list of "weirdest fighting games." Instead of normal airdashes, all characters have 8-way airdashes that can go in any direction of the stick. Instead of having normal attack buttons, two of them are dedicated to shooting projectiles. Instead of a conventional neutral, everyone is literally able to cancel the recovery of their projectile moves into movement, such as jumps or airdashes, as well as graze/phase through projectiles using dashes and highjumps effectively turning every character into a flavor of "rushdown zoner." Instead of a timer, Soku has a weather cycle that drastically changes the game state whenever a weather is in effect. Instead of normal strike/throw mixup in pressure, characters use unreactable 10f overheads/lows mixups and projectiles to deplete the opponent's guard bar. Instead of regular meter, players create decks for their character to decide what special moves, defensive systems, and supers they'll have access to in a match as they draw them as cards. There are more quirks to this game aside from the ones just stated, but point is that when I list them out like this, you can evidently see that Soku is quirky but not fundamentally different to other fighting games (I'm lying my fucking ass off with the last part, this game is weird af).

Hello there. You may be interested in looking at an old 1993 game released by Konami called Martial Champion. It's very weird (and on Fightcade), and I personally think it's a great hidden gem. Here's a rundown on most of the game's mechanics: It has 3 attack buttons, but instead of them being designated by speed or strength, they're "high", "mid" and "low", meaning everyone has dedicated anti-air and low buttons. Furthermore, everyone has exactly 2 special moves, and combos are impossible, since everyone is invincible during hitstun. Rather than having specific moves like sweeps knock down the opponent, only every 4th hit you land knocks down the opponent, and throwing resets the number of hits. Also, throws are instant, can grab airborne opponents, and there's no throw teching. So, to prevent abuse, the devs gave throws a ~5 second cooldown timer. (Additionally, Bobby, Racheal, and Goldor have air throws.) After being knocked down, during a 10 frame window in the middle of your own wake-up, you can throw while still in your invincible waking up state. The opponent cannot hurt you during this time frame, meaning to avoid this invincible throw they can't be next to you. If they go for a crossup, you'll have to switch which direction you're holding to throw them. It won't work if they're too high in the air, but if they're close to the ground you can still grab them. You will have to watch out for this on the opponent's wake up as well. Jumps are normally rather slow, but if you do a forward jump, and then input an attack button, your character will gain a sudden burst of horizontal speed, and fall either faster or slower depending on the character and button you chose, this speed can allow you to cross the entire screen in 1 jump, and mix up your landing in general, since you choose when to attack to gain speed. 5 out of the 10 characters have weapons. If they get knocked down, they can lose the weapon. Anyone can pick it up and use it for themselves by crouching on top of it, forcing you to knock them down to get it back. If you're already holding a weapon when taking one, it swaps the weapons.

I can back up the weirdest fighting game. Whether or not it was a joke, there is a game that used Tetris as a fighting game feature. Any pre-SFII game is likely to be "weird", be it Karate Champ, Pit-Fighter, Final Blow, Galactic Warriors, Shanghai Kid, Street Smart, Urban Champion, Tongue of the Fatman, King of the Monsters. Windjammers gets a mentioned often in the fighting community right now because of the new game, but there are a lot of similar weird fighting games that don't happen to be trendy at this moment. I don't even think Windjammers is a fighting game. It's a competitive game, but it's a sports game or just Pong. If Windjammers is a fighting game, every real-time 1 on 1 game is a fighting game. Also, you've never heard of "Data East" before? Hoo, boy. This is one of the really big companies of the arcade era. Data East was the first company important in the history of fighting games, even before Capcom. I get that it's hard to know who is important if you are young, but if you don't know then you may not be a Bad enough Dude to make this video (joke).
