2:37 "Barraca abana" literally means "(the) hut shakes" and is a very popular catch phrase from a tv comedy sketch from the early 2000's here in Portugal. (In the shop there, they added the "Q(ue)" which makes it "hut that shakes"). I remember a lot of puns being made with the name of Barack Obama when he became president 😅

11:47 fun fact, the Treaty of Tordesillas was made before they had discovered South America, so they didn't know it cut through part of America (the idea was for the Americas to belong to Spain and Africa to Portugal) and the Portuguese arrived in Brazil by accident while going around a storm on their way to India going around Africa and noticed that land was on their side of the Treaty, so they claimed it theirs.
@DanielSantos-xj9nb
@DanielSantos-xj9nb 3 жыл бұрын
Of course the portuguese didn't arrived in Brazil by accident, there are multiple indications that the portuguese were well aware of the existence of land west of Africa, before the official arrival in 1500. Otherwise, why would John II demand that the line of the treaty would be moved further to the west?

I came to the comments to say exactly this! I honestly thought that this was where the video would ultimately conclude. After all, at one point in the video, he defined any territory that belongs to a European country as being included in this, even if that territory is physically in another continent. So Russia has territory in Asia that goes so far East, it crosses the anti-meridian therefore becoming West, making it the territory the furthest West that belongs to a European country.

While the question of "What's the westernmost point of Europe" is simplified if you specify the mainland continent, and not the possessions of its countries, that doesn't help narrow the definition for "What's the Easternmost point or Europe?", since that depends on what you include in Europe. Is Turkey in Europe? Is Russia? The Urals? Basically, the answer to any such question of "how far does ___ extend?" is "Well, it depends on how you define "___".

Take a very close look at the Baltic Sea, Gulf of Bothnia, Gulf of Finland, and the Gulf of Riga... and look at them as a whole, to see what it looks like. If that does not work... then imagine that the very top section of the Gulf of Bothnia is a man's head seen from his right side, so he is looking towards the east... and then imagine that the very bottom right of the Baltic Sea (where roughly Poland and Lithuania meet) is the mans knee... And then, with what I said above in mind... *really closely*... look at what all of those 4 bodies of water looks like when looked at as a whole... trust me... once you see it, you can never unsee it... XD And amusingly enough, it is sort of historically correct as well... XD The first time I noticed this was back in the late 80's in school, but being shy and all I just never told anyone. What has surprised me though is that considering the size of the internet, and how many people use it, and how humans are sort of hardcoded to see patterns and what not... an unbelievably low amount of people have ever mentioned it online. XD

Fun fact it is theorized that the reason for Portugal having access to part of south america in the treaty of Tordesilhas is because portugalnactually already knew about south america and just kept it a secret until they couldn't anymore, so they negotiated with the pope to have that bit of what is now brazil so they could then expand it a lot (which we did look at the size of brazil vs the size of the land given to us in the treaty lol)

It is so confusing with english language… In swedish we make a difference between ”continent” and something we call ”world part”. Continent is a physical body of land (with its islands).. So for example africa, australia or asia…. Well still not easy since what is a part of a continent or what is its own continent still isn’t really clear… Eurasia+africa sometimes is one but often two but also three 😅 america can be one or two… But ”world part”… that is defined from history, culture and politics. But in english continent kinda serves both meanings and that is confusing.

Could we not just define 90 degrees west on the equator as the "West Pole", and 90 degrees east as the "East Pole"? Though those locations is a bit boring since they are both in the sea; also the 0,0 (the "Origin") point is also in the sea... So I propose that we shift the 0 meridian 10 degrees east, that way the new Origin at 0, 0 is in on land in Gabon (currently 0,10), the West Pole would be in mainland Equador (currently 0,-80), the East Pole would be in Indonesia (currently 0,100). And the date line would still be in the middle of the Pacific Ocean not causing any more issues than it currently does.

Or maybe shift it by 20 degrees east, that way, the 0 meridian and the associated timezone would include even more land in Africa, and europe, and it could be also retroactively be defined as Cape Agulhas the southern tip of africa which seems slightly less arbitrary and anglocentric than Greenwich does (while still being a simple round number shift from the old coordinate system). And the east pole (still Indonesia) and west pole (Brazil this time) would still be on land!

Or better yet Move 0 meridian to the current 160 degrees west, so that 0,0 is in the middle of the ocean, to minimize the risk of uninitialized coordinate fields causing seemingly valid location data for somewhere on land (maybe nautical coordinates should be shifted 180 degrees from that to avoid the same issue?) And then we could number the meridians going west from 0 to < 360; so we dont have to deal with E/W prefixes or negative numbers.. Or better yet just ditch degrees and use fractions of a turn instead (so 90 degrees is 0.25 turns)!

Iceland's a good compromise since the two plates meet there. However, as toycat explains, it depends on whether you want a geographical or political definition of a continent.

Wait since Russia is part of Europe, and if you are measuring distance from the prime meridian, Russia would be on the other side of the world. Meaing you could count all of Russia to be Europpean. Meaning the border between Latvia Estonia and Russia could be argued to be the western most part of Europe. Even though it is east of the line.

If we only count the european plaque it would be still Portugal as the Azores are in North American, European and African plaques.
