Thanks, Linus. In this video, you provided the needed information so most people, who isn't a tech expert, can make informed decision. As expected, the CPU from the current Haswell to the refresh to the Broadwell will work for both the z87 and the z97. Also, the motherboard only support DDR3 and not DDR4, like how people seriously believe it is without looking at the spec of the board. The main difference is the SATA Express and M.2 Storage Capability. Both are great added feature for increase speed for SSD drive but not so much for mechanic drive (yes, there are people that still prefer mechanic drives...). So, is this worth the upgrade if you have the z87? If you are using SATA SSD or planning to buy drives for the M.2, then this is a decent upgrade. However, if you are still sticking with mechanic drive (o.O;;) or you are a budget buyer will are saving money for major changes, then these motherboard might not be right for you. Now, if you excuse me... I will be pre-ordering these baby... Planning to get the Haswell refresh and upgrading my SSDs... *runs*

We still have a four year old H55M-E33 mother board. It hasn't been replaced because of a couple reasons -- it still works, and I'm cheap. It actually works really well and I'm very pleased. All of the components connected to it make for a pretty decent game computer. Certainly not modern tech, but it plays all of the PS3-era games with ease.

@sarfured10 жыл бұрын
triseebee Shocked me too. I'm only running an Antec H20 620. I give the real credit to the 2 Noctua NF-F12's I use on the radiator. Keep in mind though that the CPU is turbo-ing at 5.5 thanks to MSI's OC Genie. I was going to overclock it myself, but I noticed my board was doing a damn fine job on it's own. I've seen it hit 110*F max, but only rarely.

@MennoGanzeboom10 жыл бұрын
Don't you mean 4,5GHz? 5,5GHz isn't possible with a single 120mm radiator. I have a i7-3770K with a dual 140mm radiator and it's hitting under load max 60 degrees at 4,5GHz. Oké, mine's a gen 3 processor and yours a gen 4 processor, but I'm sure it doesn't make that much of a difference.
@Belfor0910 жыл бұрын
***** His CPU is gen 2 which is Sandy Bridge. Yours is gen 3 which is Ivy Bridge. Everyone knows that Sandy bridge is perfect for overclock but 5.5 GHZ its a bit optimistic.. Another thing that you have to realize is that his CPU is i5 w/o HT and yours is i7 with HT. Hyperthreaded CPU's such as i7 have problems with very high OC unless you disable HT in your Bios.

I'm still rocking a B3 Rev. P8P67 Deluxe and a 2500K. I just see very few reasons - if any - to upgrade right now; unless you need more of a workstation-grade platform, in which case I'd opt for X79, (which is ageing in itself, now). SATA Express is probably the only reason that I would consider an upgrade; but for that alone? Most definitely not.
@JtwasLuck7 жыл бұрын
Upgrading every 5 years definitely works out well if you don't stick to mainstream Z87s/Z270s! But hell the market for CPU's has stagnated so much that even Haswell CPUs today are barely different in gaming compared to the latest Skylake or whatever is the latest now (Kaby Lake?). So glad I went with a 4790K when I had the option to go X99, if this was 10 years ago I might have been in trouble XD

LeftCZ I sure hope they do put good TIM or maybe even solder the IHS on Broadwell unlocked CPUs. Though unfortunately we won't be getting them until Q1 2015.
@LeftCZ10 жыл бұрын
***** So what do you think are they gonna do with the Devil's Canyon CPUs? Only spend more time properly applying the TIM or solder it as in case of Sandy?
@RongGuy10 жыл бұрын
***** Nope. A lot of people were curious over why Ivy/Haswell run so hot, so they delidded their processors, replaced the default TIM with a high quality thermal compound, and then just placed the IHS back on and let the coolers pressure hold it in place. Most people got around 10 - 15 degrees off. So no, the TIM is utter rubbish.
@LeftCZ10 жыл бұрын
ZewRongGuy And what do you think has Intel done/will do with Devil's Canyon? A) Change the process of applying the TIIM, B) replace the current TIM with some new one or C) solder it together (as they have done with Sandy - did they do it before? Do they do it like that with socket 2011 CPUs?). And what about Broadwell? Thx

LinusTechTips Excuse me for being a bit off-topic; but I'm currently planning on building a new PC for heavy audio editing, composing and moderate gaming. For now, I'm in dubio between the 1150 socket and the 2011 socket. The 1150 socket is future proof and will support the next gen intel processors, but at the time of writing the 2011 socket houses the most powerful processors Intel is offering, and I'm really opting for the 6-core right now since the applications I use can really make use of that. The downside to 2011 is of course that the motherboards are sometimes already 3 years on the market and its future may not be guaranteed. At the other hand, getting a 2011 socket 6-core cpu now may have me settled for the future to come. So, what is your opinion on this? Should I go for the future proof 1150 with z97 chipset with it's newer features, but be limited to a quad-core now, or should I go for full performance with the 2011 socket but hand in on upgradability?

Linus, I liked the way you do a "fly by" and stil covered the essentials of the platform! So kudos there!! Currently I have 2 riggs up and running. Project "Bird of Prey", based on the Z77 platform with Asus Maximus 5 Extreme, an i7 3770K @ 4.6HGz 1.29volts), Dom Plat Ramkit 2666 cl9, 2 x 7970 Ghz. Als in custom built case with full custom watercooling loop. This a lucky cpu, It will run 5400-isch... No subzero needed Love the 3770K, still performance is good. 2th is "project BattleX", Asus ROG MAXIMUS VI EXTREME with i7 4770K, 2xGKill TridentX 2400 C9, @ 2800 C9-12-11-281T, R9-290X. On huge custom water loop 3 x 360mmx120mm (yes have full fan pack; 3x6= 18 Fans). I love 3770K better cause it takes me to place 4770k can't go. But the IMC on Z87 man :-) (if you have at least a good chip), is way better. TridentX even goes up to 3000Mhz, and have broken my personal record hugely.. Currently 3110Mhz. I am bencher, so I like all systems, but, for this gen, I don't see any reason to swap motherboard... Unless the Devil’s Canyon could tempt me.. So, Z77 WITH I7 3770K AND Z87 with 4770K for me: just right, Z97? Show me what you got, for now Nope!

I'm on Z77 3770K, no real reason for me to upgrade just yet, maybe when Sata Express drives are common and you can get motherboards covered in them, because I tend to keep a lot of drives in my machine

Can you remove the ugly camo? Are they just stickers stickers? I really like the clean look and I'm going for a black/blue/grey scheme. I think the camo would ruin it completely.

I'm on am3+. Plan on upgrading it in like two years considering it will be a four year old cpu by then. Might go with intel if amd has nothing good to offer. Broadwell and Skylake sound promissing.

Still rocking in a core i7 920 here on an asus p6x58d-e. All the components are over 4 years old now, and my i7 still overclocks to 4ghz, in fact, thats what i run it at everyday. I dont see the need to upgrade to any newer platform as my current one is perfectly fine :) ( untill something dies of course :L )

I have z87 and just got it. so tit's good to see something somthing new on the market and, can we upgrade are z87 CPU to a 4th Gen refresh or 5 th Gen CPU or would you know that right now?

Running a 3770k on Z77. Won't upgrade. Reason being there is no tangible benefit to upgrading. The only reason to upgrade would be to Z87 for full Sata 3.0 ports rather than a mix of 2 and 3, and since I haven't maxed out my ports yet, no need at all to upgrade.

so one of the main difference is Sata Express, and 2 of 3 boards do not support it? someone is trying to drain money from not-so-much upgrade for BFU... I'm still using Sandy bridge 2500, and not going to upgrade until broadwell comes out, or maybe even something next...

i just built a new computer yesterday on a Z87, felt no reason to wait or get the new boards

i7 3770k with sabertooth, not planing on upgrade. Don't want to risk my 4.6Ghz OC with luck of the draw. although more sata 3 ports would be lovely. I'm in between.

i got lucky with my sandy brigde and i could oc it to 5 gigz (75 celcius) without any problem. now my motherboard broke and i'm using my laptop to play games... i'm looking for value oriented Z77 board, it's compatible with sandy brigde right?

This is my first build, and im considering the gryphon z97. Is the tuf armor an impotant investment, or can i just save my money for say, a good GPU?
@chimpleton40719 жыл бұрын
StormGamer25 Generally nothing that has a mostly aesthetic appeal is really necessary. Usually if you are gaming on a budget you want the best gpu you can afford and other reliable, but not necessarily expensive, components to support it that won't bottleneck it.

Celerant The thing is, i wont be playing very demanding games. Ill be mostly making videos with programs like Sony Vegas. Do i even need a good GPU for that, or will on board graphics be fine? I would imagine that the extra cooling would be useful for cooling the active CPU.

Celerant Thanks for all the input! Since ill be getting a GPU anyway, i dont need Onboard graphics of the i5-4460, so instead im thinking about the AMD fx-8350, with the gigabyte ga-970A-DS3P. Do you mind judging this build? : pcpartpicker.com/p/cPGNVn

Celerant Thank you for everything. I just joined LinusTechTips.com and someone else there also suggested the gtx 960. Im really considering getting it now.

Still running 1366, its getting quite old but its done me very well over these years, I've decided to wait for the new Broadwell socket 2011 boards with DDR4 later this year

Im running Z87, and since I do not see many diferences, ill stick with that for a wile. I am interested on the new Intel CPUs.
