In this video, we will show you how to properly install an uncoupling membrane on top of a wood subfloor prior to tile installation. Read below for the benefits of an uncoupling membrane installed on wood and concrete.
General pricing for Strata mat on Amazon:
amzn.to/2HyTBcb
Direct website for specs:
laticrete.com/...
Strata Mat is an uncoupling membrane with a fleece installed to the underside. The matting has a grid structure of cavities and the matting is specifically designed for ceramic, porcelain and stone installations.
Designed to replace traditional underlayment materials.
Uncoupling: decouples the floor tile from the substrate, which means that movement in the substrate will not affect the tiles. This prevents future and expected cracking of tiles and grout joints.
Load Impact - Tiles that are laid on top of the matting are able to withstand greater loads because the matting transfers the load directly to the substrate.
Adhesive Properties: Strata Mat can be used with modified or unmodified thinset mortar.
Strata Mat can be used on an array of different surfaces, including: concrete, mortar, gypsum, and concrete.
Tiling can begin immediately after Strata mat is installed.

Nothing beats old school cement boards. Plywood alone over the years becomes loose and when an extra 1/2” cement board is added becomes solid bulletproof just perfect for tile.

Love that you can see the coverage when you install it, but I all ways let the membrane dry over night, my theory is if the mortar is half dry an you walk on it its have dry an then moved by working on top of it, it's like pulling a tile off or moving it 2 hours after installed an then trying to make it stick again, it won't. Love the rest of the video

Wonder why schluter didn’t think about this kind of matting with breathable holes to also offer as a second option for not water proof floor areas that may also want to use modified thin set great idea 👍

If your bathroom floods because say the toilet overflows it doesn't matter too much what your substrate is. Schluter is water proof, however the edge of the room is where the water will end up going and finding its way through.

Interesting product, I have never seen that. Can you use modified thin set to lay tile over kerdi walls?
@MostlyPeacefulCombatVet
@MostlyPeacefulCombatVet 5 жыл бұрын
Yo Brando! The answer to that is yes and no. Yes if you're using schluter mortars. Which I find sub par at best and way over priced. Schluter has no issue with unmodified mortar under or over schluter products and modified as long as it's their products, but only their products. Funny how that works. Now, I've been installing schluter products for a very long time and I will let you in on my "don't tell schluter" secret. I do not use unmodified thinset. I use ardex X5 most every time. Best mortars I have ever used, and they just plain work. I would recommend any installer to tread carefully when going outside of the "schluter box" You have to be very confident in the products you're using and your installation. I am 200% confident in ardex products in conjunction with schluter so I use them. As a ton of other great installers do. Never a failed leak test, call back, or issue using Ardex X5 with schluter. I can't say I've never had issues with various unmodified and schluter mortars. They just don't have the creamy, sticky consistency when mixed more fluid. And don't have the holding power. Hope this helps. I would recommend ardex and laticrete products all day long. That's been what works for me every time. 👍
@barryjohnson7941
@barryjohnson7941 5 жыл бұрын
Ardex thinsets have a chemical cure unlike others that are air dry. X5 is warranted by schluter. Also schluter is not in the cement business. They will have another company putting their product in a schluter bag and put the schluter pricing to it. Also if you hang large format tile with unmodified thinset good luck finding warranty on that
@barryjohnson7941
@barryjohnson7941 5 жыл бұрын
I cannot believe anyone would fall for the uncoupling membrane philosophy. Wood and concrete floors that move up and down still crack tile through the membrane. Tile issues occur when the tile separates from the floor because of movement and poor installation. You are saying to pay money for a product that is going to come loose. If you want your tile to stay in place 100% use a crack isolation membrane and wire or plastic mesh on wood. On concrete just crack isolation on the cracks or joints. Uncoupling membrane is a waste. Never used on commercial sites just ill informed retail home owners. And above all else do not walk on the tiles you are laying. Even with clips you can still break the bond...just an old tiler that fixes bad installs for a living

i don’t like it. i’ll tell you why. it’s hard plastic, and thin-set needs something to bite into. like when you paint a shiny surface that paint peels off. just like the paint tray liners, that doest let the paint penetrate ana it peels off. it’s hard no-porous shiny plastic. no good ! that stata liner or whatever it’s called is not porous at all and won’t bond with thin-set. the tiles may go down ok but i’d bet that everyone that uses that stuff will hear about the tiles popping up or cracking. that membrane was designed for concrete subfloors that tend to has moisture and crack. that membrane will allow the concrete to move without effecting the tile floor above it, BUT, i still think the tiles will pop after some time. i installed tile thirty years ago on many jobs over plywood and it still looks good and still set strong. stata may may bring in some money for the company that makes it, but i think it’s going to bite them in the ass at some point. that’s my story and i’m sticking to it. cheers !

Uncoupling membranes in theory allow for the substrate and the tile to move independently to prevent cracking. It’s been my industry experience that these types of membranes allow for far too much movement. I’d say avoid these types of products unless you like to frequently repair & replace your work. Large format and plank tiles are especially susceptible to failures when installed over products such as this. Modes of failure I’ve seen. 1) grout break out 2) tile fracture 3) difficulty maintaining a level lay 4) mortar bed failure 5) membrane separation Grout break out and mortar bed failure seem to be the most common. In my experience it’s not an if but when type of situation. It’s going to fail you just hope the customer damages the floor or moves before it happens.

However, ditra is waterproof and vapor tight when used in conjunction with kerdi band. If you don't need the waterproofing properties, this is an awesome alternative to schluter ditra
