One of the many things I love about this series's animation isn't just how good it is for the flashy stuff, but also how incredible it is for seemingly minor things. The animation for when we were in Frieren's POV with her hand on Fern's shoulder talking to Fern was amazingly smooth. I really hope they manage to bring the same teams back for season 2.

Freiren mentioned about using that spell last 80 years ago, precisely the time where she and the group killed the Demon King!

In a round about way, that makes Fern as difficult of an adversary as the demon king. That girl really is built different.

@@TrybzVibezfern won't last 5 seconds against frieren alone. To beat frieren, you need frieren+fern team. Or you'll need someone completely busted like serie.

@@TrybzVibez Woah there, step on the breaks. 😂 Fern might be exceptional but she's far from "as difficult of an adversary as the demon king". She'd even die from the weakest of the demon generals. This is clone Frieren. It has no logic. It will use spells when it has to, and in this case, it lost its limbs so it had to use that spell and took Fern in one shot while against the demon king, Frieren might have used spells of the same caliber all the time just to defeat it. In the fight, Frieren even says Fern didn't see the opening and that she has to do it herself, which tells Fern is nowhere near those kind of levels yet.

@@TrybzVibezNot really that... but to your credit Frieren did mention Ferns Zoltraak could kill her, and she managed to take aggro from the real Frieren.

see i heared some people saying this magic is showing the clone is 'backed in a corner' , very much not the case i think , this is what Frieren is ACTUALLY like , this is her normal power , because we know she restricts the spells she uses for Fern's benefit and even back in the original adventure , she was there to support himmel and eisen , not to destroy everything , we see it come out one before with a BASIC spell when she attacks the 'illusion himmel' , that was the same spell as normal just she was letting emotions flow a bit too much internally and well , forest went byebye , but THIS frieren we see is the REAL freiren , not her surging her power , not her putting in her all , this is basic settings for her skill , just she holds back. remember what she told Fern during training 'this basic spell is enough to beat mages of this era'

This might be the only 3rd time anime Frieren reveals her old persona: when she blasted illusion Himmel, when she told Aura to kys, and then this clone Frieren.

Thats allways her strategy. I think Frieren really is so embodied by the training she holds for 1000 years, she allways did what her Master teached her. Trick demons with hidding your strenght, helps her in every fight. Demon or not. Living in obscurity, not standing out too much. She only revealed her power from time to time if it benefits the situation. Her destroying the barrier before was a help for lawine, but also a powerstatement to the mages. Also Frieren holds allways back to let the others make their own experience. She raises Fern to be the most powerful mage next to her. I look forward to the big battles we will see in the flashbacks, as Eisen mentioned. They had it really hard back then. The demon king battle will be very interesting, also im curious on which battle Frieren used this magic she spoke about. 80 years ago it could be Qual or the Demon King.

13:41 that is the original zoltraak spell that the demons use, its color is black and is a human killing magic. meanwhile the one frieren teaches is the modified zoltraak for demon killing (colored white), lugner has also previously mentioned how the spell is different from what he used to know

@@draghettis6524 i did look at the quaal fight again and you are right, they used the same animation, qual even used the same potency level in one of the blasts too

@@SpieleSuchti894 I'd argue this one was stronger than Qual's big blast, due to it overflowing backwards and how it shattered Frieren's shield, while Fern was able to block Qual's with two layers.

Sense said her clone did not count as true adversity because she knew from the beginning that Ubel could easily defeat it. So however daunting as a test obstacle her clone might be, a “solution” was readily available. The examinees just had to figure it out.

Lol, only now I noticed at 12:20 - it's that one guy who decided to go solo being carried away by golem. We saw him crying alone previously. So he got attacked by 3 clones and had to use the bottle :D He's also the last one golem delivered at the end of the episode. :D At least no one died.

I love how this episode establishes that if it ever came to it, Fern would have zero chance. Then the Fern-bots came around to tell me that actually, this was a pure 1v1 and Fern smoked her. :D

That last look on the face of the clone though. Like she upgraded Fern from slightly annoying to kill on sight. Also: note how Frieren remarked that "Fern wouldn't notice this opening". Frieren was actually giving Fern the opportunity to learn during this fight. It went on as long as it did because Frieren was giving her chances to notice and exploit her weaknesses. She had the same move the clone used in her back pocket the entire fight. Even then, she was still holding back.

Frieren didn't use that move because she (and the clone as a consequence) can defend against it. To defend against the pinnacle/height of magic you need to understand the principles behind it

@@nirolf12 It looked to me like it was more of an all or nothing thing. The clone seemed 100 % concentrated on pinning Fern. Wouldn't be surprised if that's required.

@@AndragonLea it's never mentioned if that's required, but we know it leaves the caster full of openings so one should be careful when using it

That should be the power of that spell at basic output, no extra power, because this isn't a magic spell, instead this is something more like a curse or a natural disaster where she isn't projecting her imagination into reality anymore but instead just bending reality to her will. This attack is never really explained in the manga too, but with how much we know about curses from the manga, this attack looks like one, but thats an insane feat because 99.9% times curses can only be used by mindless monsters and in extremely rare cases, by a very powerful demon, i don't think even serie, the living grimoire can use curses. So frieren having a curse this strong of her own is kinda mental. And to counter a curse, you need to be able to use that curse yourself, otherwise there is no counter.

@Mayank_MJ idts that frieren used to fern is a curse. say, if humans call it spell, demons call it curse, the elf must be calling it elven magic. i know, it didn't state in manga but just a hunch

At least we now realized that Frieren is actually EXTREMELY powerful. Totally OP. I'm now excited how will they animate Frieren vs. Solitar together with Denken vs. Macht fights in the future, if they make S2 of this anime.

can i ask? when frieren battling with solitar, does solitar concealing her while fighting with frieren? bc when solitar used the mana burst, frieren noticed that her flow of mana changed

well in manga when methode battling with a demon, the demon stated that she recognized methode's ways of "fighting style" and it runs into their family about a "fighting style" that they are dedicated to capture and execute demons. well at first i thought methode was a woman who's girly, but when her and fern fight a 2 demon, she did not let her guard down!
