Show/travel to the Nepal side of Everest! It is probably going to be easier on your body/mind. I also love Everest and am bias. Nepal has more tourist places higher up for max comfort I think too, but next time (as you definitely learned) acclimatize. Thank you for putting the experience of altitude sickness in your video, as I will hopefully get to make an Everest trip in the near future and will be sure to do so (acclimatize) as well! I really wanted/want to see more of Tibet since I have adopted recently a Buddhist/mindfulness-based practice and wondered about the terrain there for missionaries and hikers alike. Everest is of course a sacred mountain to Nepal and I got a sense that on the Tibet side it is a National Park? Is Everest also sacred to Tibetans? China/Chinese? Thank you for sharing!

Thanks for sharing this Nicole. I traveled there in 2004 overland from Kathmandu, and had an amazing time. I had taken buses all the way from Calcutta initially so I guess I got used to the altitude, but I still had a lot of sleepless nights running out of breath and generally feeling shattered all the time. Although there was lots to see, you can't go there without seeing the politics of it all. Its very sad but Tibetans have so much resilience, and I agree, we could all learn from them. On our return from Llasa we also went via Everest base camp. Even the drive to get there was so amazing. When we finally descended back down through the clouds to Kathmandu, it was as if we had been living in the clouds for the last 2 weeks, so amazing. Digital cameras were still a novelty so I had my film camera and didn't end up taking many photos. Times have changed and looking back at photography habits back then we were so conservative with photos. If I went back I think I would be clicking non stop. Instead I have about 2 rolls from there, I was on such a budget that film was a premium. Im still gutted about that, but the memories are there and very special. I also went to Dharamsala where the Dalai Lama lives in India, it is also very interesting because the Tibetans are free to say and show what they really think. There is a very interesting museum there which is worth a visit. PS they changed the visa rules the day we arrived at the border, so they put all our passports in a safe and we stayed at a guest house at the border. Next day they didn't know the combination to the safe and had to cut it open with a gas torch! They were changing the rules every second day to make it hard to get in. Had to see the funny side of it though, we all had a laugh at there expense! Well worth the effort to go. Cheers, Jeremy

Did this 25 years ago. Lhasa to Katmandu overland with two SUVs and two guides. Did the Friendship Route via Everest Base camp. You could go right to the base camp at that time. Loved it! No camera bans at that time.

This is rare and precious travel video about Tibet. Thank you Nicole for sharing. By the way, I think due to the history of foreign journalists twisted reporting that instigated racial violence in Tibet/Xingjiang especially during 2008 Beijing Olympics, foreigners have lost trust of Chinese people and government in general. It would take time for Tibet restrictions to loose until the west has earned back China's trust.

Some Tibetan exiles got in, found some unemployed and unhappy people and organized that riot in 2008. They burned shops and killed people regardless of ethnicities but all western media twisted it to be a story of the Chinese government killing peaceful Tibetan protesters. After that, foreigners are tightly monitored. Before 2008, travelers could travel independently the same way as Chinese, not anymore.

in 2018, I once met a couple of 2nd gen Tibetan in exile with US passports on an airplane from Beijing to Washington DC who just finished a trip to Lhasa. I'm no legal expert and situation definitely vary depending on legal nationalities, but I think the channel is open. Yet, the clearance process is definitely hard and tedious. I wish progress can be made between the Chinese government and Tibetan government in exile, though their relation is in large part dictated by Sino-American relation. alas

@@JKimi6 In fact, there are many Tibetan born overseas traveling to Tibet every year and I even saw video on YT about some Tibetan exiles permanently moving back to Tibet to settle. The channel is always there. Just that some Tibetan exiles are doing nothing but whining they couldn't get permits, leaving people an impression as if there were no channels. Of course, if they are connected to the Tibetan exile gov, that is a different story.

I am a Canadian university students from China that are now learning remotely due to COVID-19. This spring festival(a month later), me and my parents will go to Tibet, rent an off-road vehicle and drive it in Tibet for about 2 weeks independently by ourselves. Ur video looks amazing and feel sorry for u to have altitude sickness in that amazing holy and spiritual land. Hope we can drive the vehicle from Lhasa to Nyingchi (the low-altitude route), and then all the way to Shigatse and Mt. Everest camp.

There are many Tibet travel logs on KZbin... Those from Chinese travelers are more interesting because they can roam for a long time everywhere there, such as places with a tradition that a woman is married to both brothers, or their sky funeral sites, ordinary peoples homes, scammers, adventures... But they usually only have English titles but not English caption.

I'm sure your Chinese Guide didn't mention the forced language change brought on the school kids. The Tibetan language will be a thing of the past in a few generations. Also your tour guide didn't mention the dumping grounds in the norther plateaus for Chinese Military Radio-Active substances, or the internment camps for local Tibetans similar to what is going on with the Uyegars. Did I mention that the Chinese have taken over most businesses especially restaurants. Anyway, it's a trip of a lifetime I'm sure.

Thanks Rob! I traveled there with my US passport. My friend has some connections and was able to get us the permits pretty easily, but in general I would say it's quite difficult for foreigners to go there.

There is medication you can take before your trip that will help, as well as medication during your trip. Certain herbs are also recommended. Also, having more time will naturally help your body adjust. By rushing, we didn't do ourselves any favors.

I just used oxygen all the time to prevent high altitude sickness. About 1-2can a day. What is wrong with it?. It is quite cheap and natural. No harm at all. I think your guide harmed your team by not using it as much as possible.

You have probably already heard this, but Mt. Everest is NOT the world’s TALLEST mountain. It is the world’s HIGHEST mountain. When measured from base to summit, the world’s TALLEST mountain is the Hawaiian island Mauna Kea, which is 33,500 feet tall. Only 13,796 of the mountain pokes out of the mighty Pacific ocean. The remaining 19,700 feet is submerged beneath the Pacific’s surface.

If I remember correctly, permits are not issued in several winter months because of harsh weather. Tibet Plateau is not a very habitable place due to its difficult geography. Some foreign travelers had no idea, experience and language skills, yet were very adventurous to go deep into countryside even into the no man's lands. It happened before and locating, rescuing and getting them to hospitals are no easy tasks, which is another reason that they need permits and are accompanied so that they don't run around kids on the loose. Actually if you don't like traveling with large groups and only going to popular touristy places, you can hire private guides to accompany only your group and they can take you to not so travelled places and even make arrangements for you to stay with local families or their family run home stay.

You basically have to do super long exposures, and a wide angle lens will create a nice look. Watch a few tutorials on this topic - most likely you can do it with the lenses you already have.

I have a theory as to why you cannot take photographs of the monks/monastery debate sessions. I believe (this is just my theory) that the Dalai Lama has advocated the Internet for its educational value, however, simple photographs are not as impactful and thus phone pictures/video are allowed and cameras are not. Does anyone else wonder about these things?

Road trip are not allowed even for Chinese who raised on the plain area, the altitude sickness is simply strong, I've been there 7 years ago, above 5000 meters altitude I cant barely walk in straight, I totally understand why free trip there is banned. The clear sight of Chinese colonialism in Tibet is the imposition of too many dirty red flags all over Tibet. You hardly see any red flag on private property in China but in Tibet, it is forced upon to fly the red flag and hang the picture of Mao to Xi Photo in living room. Another visible sign of colonialism is all Chinese characters on the signboards are larger while Tibetans are much smaller.

Chinese flags are like a decoration in China and you see them in every city in China, especially tourism spots, sometimes pretty random along some roads. Tibetan put Mao's and Xi's photos because they gave lands and houses for free to Tibetans, so Tibetans respect them like they respect other religious leaders. If you see national flags on Tibetan houses, that means those houses were built for them for free. Since Tibet is a province of China. The idea is to make Chinese characters bigger but put Tibetan characters above Chinese ones if you notice. But I bet you exile Tibetans are not interested in facts and context anyway. And you don't really care about your fellow Tibetans either. Your sole purpose is to make accusations of China for whatever the Chinese gov did or did not do...
