This year we planted a flowering cherry tree in memory of my sister, while it was in the pot it had leaves and a few flowers, but the week of planting it got very hot, I watered it as much as I thought I could with out over doing it. The day we planted it, most of the flowers and leaves were gone. I have done the best I know for it. Kept it watered but not over. I’m not good with plants and the tree is barren right now, but it has been very warm here, few cool days since planting. Currently you can take the tip of a branch and bend it around and touch the trunk where the branch comes off of it. I was told this is a sign that the tree is still alive, and saw in a video or two the same. The bark on the tree still has a reddish color to it as well. Don’t know it the bark color is a good sign or not, but we have been told that when a tree goes in to shock from heat and transplanting it can sometimes take up to three years before it recovers. Does anyone know how true that is?

Hey, there. Planting a tree in memory you sister is such a beautiful way to honor her. As far as the tree goes, I think three years really refers to it becoming established, without the threat of shock returning when temperatures get too high and water become scarce. It may also take three years for the root system to really become strong. If you scratch the bark, it is still green underneath the first layer?

Where are you located? Heat may really play a role in the stress appearing on your trees. Also, be mindful of clay soil. Sometimes, water will sit on top of the clay and rot the roots if not absorbed fast enough. Just be on the look out for darkening leaves (brownish to black).

This is very helpful. But I'm still confused about how often to water and how much water constitutes "overwatering." I just transplanted four 6-foot "Autumn Blaze" maple trees about a week ago. I've been watering once a day and I'd estimate I water for about 3-4 minutes with the hose on full-bore and directed right at the base of the tree. I have no idea how much of this water is getting down to the roots. I suspect maybe I need to lower the water volume and let it run longer. There's obviously some run-off. Am I drowning the tree, or is it dying of thirst? I have some wilting/dying leaves and quite a few more that are turning orange. When I transplanted, I was moving from a #5 pot into loose, pretty healthy topsoil. I didn't do anything to the root ball. Now I'm wondering if I should have. Any advice would be much appreciated.
@greenbiznurserylandscaping3960
@greenbiznurserylandscaping3960 2 жыл бұрын
Hey, there. So, this always helps when I am thinking about too much or too little water. Think of a nice soaking, steady rain. That is what we are trying to replicate when watering newly installed trees. So, when you are watering with the hose, allow the water to soak the entire area of the rootball (or what you believe is the rootball). An additional example is drip irrigation. Our nursery uses drip irrigation on our container stock. We allow the drip irrigation to run for 20 minutes. To give you a visual, the water output from the emitters resembles the trickle or spray coming from a leak in your hose. We are aiming for a steady, soaking watering, vs a summer downpour that only lasts 5 minutes. I hope this makes sense. Sometimes we recommend using a 5 gallon Lowe's bucket to water to help customers know how much they are watering. But if you can replicated a soaking rain, that's always best. To address how often to water, what is under the topsoil? Clay? Sand? Dark, rich soil?

Hi, Janet. It depends on the plant and the time of year. Some plants are more sensitive than others. Ideally, plants should "bounce back" within a couple weeks, as long as water, light, and temperatures are consistent.

I gently soaked the rootball in water to get off the "bad" soil and repot in good soil. I now know that was a mistake.The plants did fine for a week. Now they are curling up and dropping all their leaves. Is there anything I can do for the trees now?

Hi. Do you know anything about bonsai pruning and repotting? So last week I pruned both the foliage and roots of a blue point juniper to train it as bonsai. But pruning its roots was my mistake because I didn’t understand that the tree is too active during this growing season. Now my tree is in shock after being repotted in a smaller container with a different medium (akadama). Junipers need to be on the drier side in full sun. Should I still water it more often and keep it on the shade to treat its shock? Please, any advice will be truly appreciated. It’s a beautiful tree and I want to save it.

Trans planted my 2 year old oak tree about a month ago. I’m watering it daily with a deep root watering technique. I run the garden hose into a pvc pipe about 1 inch in diameter straight into the roots for about 10 mins on one side of the tree, after 10 mins I put the hose onto the other pvc pipe and water the tree for another 10 mins with the deep root watering technique. I noticed yesterday the branches appear to be dry. But the truck is moist and green under the bark. So after seeing that I doubled my watering time from 10 mins total, to now 20 mins. Will this help get water from the roots up to the canopy and branches? The leaves are brown. Not wilted just brown, and are not falling off. So basically I use to water it a total of 5 mins lol clearly that’s not long enough. So now I’m up to 20 mins of watering straight into the tree. @greenbiznurserylandscaping3960

Clay is horrible soil to plant in. I highly recommend removing the clay. With hot temperatures, you are bound to have some sort of transplants shock -- this is completely normal. Water thoroughly at time of plants and water for 2-3 weeks after that every day or every other day. The plant should heal itself after 4 weeks at the most.

It can take weeks for a tree to heal after transplant shock. Give it time. Questions: What kind of soil do you have where you planted it?

Hi, did you buy these plants from us? You can remove any buds that have wilted or dried out.

I planted a jalapeño into a bigger pot and as soon as it goes in the sun it wilts and looks like it’s about to die and then once it’s in the shade it pops back up! None of my other plants do that I have a bell pepper and Carolina Reaper that are just fine! What’s this about? Is it transplant shock?

Hello! Thanks for the question. It could be transplant shock. If it is, it should only last for a couple weeks. Did you fertilize this particular plant? It could also be shock from the fertilizer. Since this was 1 week ago, how is it doing now?

Green Biz Nursery & Landscaping Inc I used fish fertilizer after I planted it, it seems to be taking the sun better now, it doesn’t wilt near as much so I think I’m a week or so it’ll be fine

@@gonewronggarage4565 not sure if any help now but the difference may have been growing from seed in full sun. Full sun may have been the shock.

I transplanted a small lemon eucalyptus tree about three days ago with about centimeter diameter trunk and about 7 feet tall into the ground. When I took it out of the pot all the soil fell apart and there were just some small roots left. I covered the roots with dirt the best I could and mixed in a little soil and compost and dug the hole about twice the size as the pot. Two days latter all the leaves where drying and falling off and the branches are drying and becoming brittle. I'm afraid to water to much because I don't know if the soil is draining good. So I pulled the mulch back and gave little water every other day. The soil is a little moist on top. At this point I'm not sure what to do? I'm thinking about giving a little vitamin b-1 since it had such small roots. The temperature is going to be around 105 degrees for a few days. Any advice?
