Trench Crusade made me realize that I'm actually more comfortable when all the really nasty stuff happening in the 40k universe is implied, rather than explicit. I don't need an itemized list of everything the Dark Eldar do to their prisoners, I just need to know that whatever they do is terrible enough that other races have learned that it's better to die than be captured by them.

​I have a similar feeling, I really enjoy Warhammer because it has (at least most of the times) a good balance between grimdark and epicness. However Trench Crusade is too much for me. Like I tried to look up the rules and every page is just some horrible disgusting thing. Additionally the christian elements doesn't click with me either and I am christian (although with rather cynical view on the religious systems made by humans). I mean I find the idea of Jesus as super-powered dragon ball z style warrior to be funny and cool but no we get a mutated abomination with blood all over it. If you're interested in exploring other tabletop games for videos I'd highly recommend going over Lancer. Not only is it a game centered around playing as mech pilots which is rad as hell but I think it's genuinely interesting as a setting. Very rarely do I feel like in these types of games do you see mankind actively "succeeding" and obtaining an overall better quality of life. Sure things aren't perfect but overall mankind in Lancer seems like it's actually on an upwards trajectory vs horrific stagnation if not outright doomspiraling like in 40k or Trench Crusade.

Guess it kinda helps that the one in charge was just a man and not one of the strongest beings to ever exist on the mortal plane.

Tbh i do not care for trench crusade. the only good thing i can say about it is the aesthetic is cool. Trench crusade is not grimdark. It is grimderp. People think grimdark is ‘everything sucks all the time forever’, but i disagree. What makes grimdark settings like 40k so compelling is the core of hope, which is something trench crusade lacks. It is things like Pedro Cantor carrying an exhausted and injured woman when she can’t go on any further when by all rights she should have been just left or given The Emperor’s mercy, and a squad of Salamanders giving and risking their everything just to save the life of a single human, the possibility of hope and goodness to still exist even in the cold uncaring, if not openly hostile, world surrounding the characters is what makes grimdark settings so compelling, while trench crusade is ‘LOL God’s favorite oracle is burning in hell for all eternity because a bunch of edgy assassins wearing baby hearts stabbed her with knives covered in magic water and he is to impotent to do anything about it LOL’

My problem with Trench Crusade is that I just have such a hard time buying that Europe didn't fall in the time between 1099 and modern day. "The forces of Hell are disorganized," sure, but the non-Hell forces were starting so far behind the ball that I just can't buy them catching up.

You also have to remember that the forces of Heaven/Faithful are also at play (even though indirectly) through the Council of Saints and there's massive technological advancement on both sides. I don't buy the forces of Hell in the beginning of the First Heresy had Artillery Witches that would be kinda OP and dumb lol

​@@Xynth25 Honestly kinda fair to have that hangup tbh. I think its an effect that the real scale of the conflict is way bigger than just this, but we don't see it yet. Heretic forces are out raiding Europe. Like up to Ireland or eastern Europe. Implied to also be present in the Americas too. But these are tidbits rn. Theres a bunch of factions being worked on right now to show the true scale. But at least with lore stuff rn, its just everyone is spread too thin, can't afford to make the big push required, or too worried about backstabbing. Like 40k actually. New Antioch and the Sultanate could make a huge push and reclaim land. But then they're exposed to being sieged and loosing their supply lines. Which they spend most of their time protecting. Then the demons cant make a big push because they're spread so thin, and it would leave them open to a demonic power play. Good ol wargame faction infighting lol.

One thing to kinda understand is that this is kinda a cold war for Heaven and Hell. Hell doesn't dare to actually cause too much destruction since God would slap them down in a blink. True demons also aren't permited to enter the mortal realms or they would get hunted down by angels.

You know, I do kinda wonder where the Indigenous American cultures are in this setting, given that presumably the whole "Endless war against hell starting in the crusades" thing woulda hamstrung the horrors of colonialism plenty. Personally, I think it would be extremely funny if something like the Iriquois Confederation evolved into a biopunk utopia in absence of colonialism, then they ended up going overseas to Europe, and "GOOD LORD WHAT IS HAPPENING IN THERE!"

Like, you'd probably have to do some weird syncretism to make it fit with the primary-Abrahamic setting rules, and if it were official you'd probably want to get artists/writers from several native nations to help (And actually listen to them unlike some games) but good god even I could come up with better ideas than "Actually these oppressed religions were worshipping demons"

@@Qwerty-jy9mj I mean, to speak in good faith, I feel as if it is different to talk about it with depicting a living religion that is currently being very much oppressed as opposed to various polytheistic faiths that're mostly kaput aside from a few revivals. My idea was that God basically turned out to use the nations as a "backup plan," dropping something in their lap that ratcheted up their techniques of land management to ludicrous biopunk levels, with the Iriquois Confederacy coming on top. The idea'd be they're a bit akin to the Tau, with a lighter morality and a biopunk aesthetic contrasting in a way that's somewhat fitting, but also possesses their own dark side (The IC is still a political state after all, and states do dubious things all the time) The syncretistic finagling with native religions could come from the idea that the native deities're less like capital-G Gods and more like the Wizards from Tolkien's work but for God instead of Manwe, and native religion didn't count as worship under the "No gods before me" thing (Which could lead to some interesting mysteries wrt how that works). If we wanted to bring the demonic into this, there's an easy solution: The Aztec Empire. Or rather, what it becomes. For all their achievements, they were horrifying and widely disliked in their time and their religion was heavily shaped by the desires of empire. Imagine if they lasted far longer with more biotech, and then something else started whispering to their high priests. Granted, they'd be a tiny faction just popping in in my vision, an extreme to-the-side thing, but still. Also, I'll note I didn't say "medicine men," I said artists. Specifically because I would want people who're from those nations to weigh in, but not boring sanitized corporate consultant-types, but rather people who know how to tell a good story.

My only problem with this game and I fully accept getting hit with the "woke bat." But, this game has badass Christian Knights and Mutant Jesus clones as well as super cool Unified Islam faction... Where are the Jews? They would still be in diaspora from canon and current in-game events and, if God and Demons are real, then Jews would be the actual chosen ones of God. They would be important to a setting like this all I am saying and if every Abrahamic religion gets a badass army then each one should have one.

Coming soon actually! They are on the docket of a few factions we are gonna see when they get the chance to expand the game. From what they are doing it seems to be the Hebrew Knights, Prussian Commonwealth, Church of Metamorphosis, Order of the Dragon (As in Vlad the Impaler), and Path of the Beast. Also they teased working on rules for war golems lol. Wouldn't be surprised to see some art in the next few months.

Trench Crusade is not brave enough to portrait the part of christian mythology in which the devil is associated with lust, vanity and hedonism. They went for the easy route and just use the aggressive and violent facet of devil.
