It is also funny that christianity could not get rid of all pagan sayings. We still say "Ukonilma" or "ukkonen" as words of thunderstorm. The rumbling sound comes from wheels of Ukko's chariot - or something like that.

Final Fantasy 14 has a relic weapon named "Ukonvasara" but that weapon is... an axe. Which is extra silly because they could've just called it Ukonkirves and it would've been completely correct. xD

@@IrishinFinland Lol yea. Nice video though. I even started to wonder if it isn't actually supposed to be an ax instead of a hammer. I mean in the country with some of the most dense forests in the world an ax sounds a bit more likely a thing to become a symbol and then perhaps the hammer would have become as a secondary name for it due this apparent similarity to the Norse symbol of Thor. Well who knows. Oh - ran into a video which might be interesting at least funny to watch for you. kzbin.info/www/bejne/Zpbdhnpuhpx5jMU

As a Finn myself, I always thought that although the Finnish pantheon on the whole has little in common with the Norse one, I've seen Ukko and Akka as Finnish counterparts for Thor and Sif respectively. Not only is Ukko a thunder god with a hammer, but he's associated with many of the same things as Thor. Also, I think some story or something mentioned him often killing trolls, similarly to Thor often fighting the Jotun. The one major difference is that there are apparently some spells and invocations that mention Ukko having a blazing sword instead of a hammer. Both Akka and Sif are often associated with the earth, though the former is, depending on the source, associated with a variety of other things as well.

We need to see the general cultural roots of mankind behind this - first there was a Great Mother, because the all important role of mothers in the life of human beings - she was the life-giver and the life-keeper. Then the role of the Mighty Father, the protector and provider. These were together the High Pair or Holy Couple, the Great Parents or the first Ancestors. We are all dependent on them. These and their symbols will show up all over the world, more or less independently. By and by the stories and symbols and rituals will become more diversified, and actually more interesting. In Kaleval we can se these stages. Pohjan Akka is seen as the Great powerful Mother for the most northern people, she is both good and bad. In the south more diverse male heroes and anti-heroes emerge. Male gods get associated with the sky, too, not just the Earth - Ukko a formidable natural power, and human Väinämöinen (his wisdom and cunning, but also old age). Much needed for progress.

According to historical and etymological reasoning Ukko is the same as Perkele. Perkele was obviously an ancient pagan god as according to Christian tradition he is synonymous with the Devil just like every other pagan god. It originates either directly from Proto German or the the Baltic thunder god Perkuns, both of which further originate from the latin word percutere (to strike) which is also the origin of "percussion". So it would be fair to hypothesize that Ukko/Perkele are the same thing and just the local version of an Indo-European thunder god.

Anything and everything about Finland in earlier times fascinates me, as l am a Finnish-American born in Finland. l am very much interested in the ancient mythology of Finland, and specifically in Ukko, whose portrait l have on my living-room wall. Ukko, and Finnish mythology in general, was obviously influenced by Norse mythology; the Finnish "deities" were originally spirits, rather than bona fide gods, and changed due to Norse influence. By the way, ALL Finnish words have the first syllable stressed or emphasized, so "vasara" ("hammer") is pronounced "VUH-sar-a."

(to my eye it looked like the 'world pillar', maailmanpylväs, holding up the lid of the sky.., some has also said Sampo is the maailmanpylväs) ..maybe these all could be synonymous, idk. Oh and btw, just to throw this into the mix, one story relates ukonvasara to be the depiction of the colliding of Väinämöinen and Joukahainen: ascending from top, zig zagging and turning at each other in the bottom.. too many stories! :D for the riders and women, you can search käspaikka in finna dot fi.. that style were common in those

In the Caribbean island of Cuba, the cult of Changó (orisha or Yoruba god of thunder, sometimes spelled Shango in Nigeria), also has a "thunder stone" element in his cult. These thunder stones are revered and certain kinds of medicine are attributed to it, or magical properties. Also, while most Yoruba deities are kept in a clay pot, the "mysteries" or stones of Shango are kept in a wooden box, which is reminiscent of Ukko's dwelling place / consort Rauna, which is associated with rowan wood.

Interesting how the axe head is said to also have healing powers. I cant remember the source, but I remember reading a little something about finnish shamanic magic, and it was believed in order to heal or treat an injury you needed to know the source (iron or fire for example) and the name of the source, as the names held power in themselves. The shape could also reflect the cycle of high and low pressure air / weather systems; for example, in high pressure, the air is forced downward towards earth, resulting in dispersed cloud cover and sunny, warm days - whereas low pressure results in the cool air rising and creating condensation, cloud cover, precipitation and storms. These processes are cyclical in nature and are obviously effected by a lot of different factors, but it's interesting to see the depiction of these systems portrayed in conical fashion. I wonder if the ancients had thought of weather systems similarly, and related these conical/funnel shapes to that of a hammer and its symbolic representation of thunder and lightning storms. Maybe I'm entirely wrong but the hammer reminds me of this.

Sounds to me that the Danish finding can be a Finnish export. I'd love to find an academic study about this subject. This reminds me of a particular type of viking age brooch with specific decorations. According to historians it is originally from Western Finland, but such items have been found more broadly. These disparities really show how ancient trade routes have enabled the exchange of material culture. Of course there have been Finnish findings that have foreign origins as well. All this is very fascinating to me.

Maybe you know these words already but I comment it anyway if some are interested. Ukko = Father Ukon ilma = Father's weather Ukkonen = Thunder ( nen describes feature, like ''weather is sunny'') Ukko Ylijumala = Father overgod (overgod is like overlord, but instead it being lord of lords, it is God of gods) And these are pretty interesting things I discovered. In bible it says God's voice is like thunder... Jesus gave nickname to James and John, sons of Thunder. If you translate it, it will be ''Ukkosen pojat'' There is old prayers for Ukko in certain situations, what is really interesting I have found these in bible too. I am pretty sure Finns worshiped Father God before Christianity, and it was not very Christ like for ''Church'' that time to spread gospel and kill everyone who refuses to join that religion or continue ''Pagan ways''. Even tho if I am pretty sure of it, I am not 100% sure, so, I could be wrong, but my study continues! I find this Really Really Interesting.

I wouldn't say the same source, but the tradition of having amulets of the hammer/axe of the thunder god did become prevalent around the Baltic starting from the 500s onward was likely from a shared source. The concept of the axe or hammer as Ukko's weapon was likely derived from the Baltic people rather than the Scandinavians of the Viking age, especially since Perkele (either Ukko going by a regional name or a very similar deity serving the same roles) is from the Baltic thunder god Perkunas. The only reason they are similar is because Baltic people and Scandinavians had a very similar culture and religion on the account of their shared Indo-European origins. Ukko also had many other weapons than just the axe or hammer. Things like clubs, bows and swords were also viewed as Ukko's weapon of choice. The bow being represented as Ukko's weapon is likely the oldest of them all and is shared pretty much among every other Uralic speaking peoples' mythos, since it had been the most important tool and weapon a person had for a really long time.

Quite interesting that the Sami and Finnic peoples lived in Nordic countries called Norway, Sweden and Finland and parts of Russia already after the last ice age. Why do you continuously pronounce it FASSAARA instead of VASARA? Haven’t you ever heard the word? Fassara is an arabic word that means to explain, to expound, to elaborate, to eludiate or to interpret, and it has nothing to do with Finnish VASARA, and it sounds totally different as well.

@@jslfcs6655 I wasn’t talking to you. And the pronunciation was indeed the worst you could ever imagine. Well, if that would be his best, he would be hopeless. But I don’t think so. I hope he can learn if you as an obstacle to that would just step aside and keep silent.

@@korjataanse4858 It's ok to tell some one that they pronounce things badly, but not ok to bash them for it. Rakentava palaute on parenpi kuin julkinen lynkkaus ihan vaan ääntämisen takia. Yritystä sentään oli, enemmän kuin monilla muilla. Älä ole noin negatiivinen...
