Hey now! Please don't stress about that! Honestly I could make an entire video on just this concept. I really don't love the word "smart" because it makes it sound like doctors and lawyers and people with advanced degrees were just naturally born with the ability to pass tests and remember everything. I just want to let you know that that is absolutely NOT TRUE. While processing information fast in your head can certainly help you, the most important thing is not being "smart" its about working hard! One of my favorite quotes goes something like "Hard work beats talent when talent doesn't work hard" (Tim Notke/Kevin Durant). And when I look at my fellow classmates I don't see a bunch of geniuses who don't have to lift a finger to pass. I see a bunch of extremely hard working men and women who are putting in the hours to fighting to become more knowledgable. So what I'm getting at here is that if we can do this, you can too! You just have to be willing to work extremely hard for it :)

BellaVet Awe, thank you. I didn't have the best math skills until about my senior year of high school and I blew off my freshman and sophomore year of high school so I don't know how I am in science now. But I love animals and not just the furry ones. Haha. So I think I will give it a try. If it doesn't work out for me, I have other majors in mind. I appreciate your help! I know I didn't get the best grades in high school, and I wasn't necessarily the smartest, but I am willing to work hard.

I'm trying to learn early and teach myself about vet stuff, but there's only so much that I can find on the internet... I looked up the different times of mange, distemper, and other diseases. I have watched a ton of surgeries online, as well as shadowed a vet three or four times and watched surgeries there. I'm working really hard in school so that I can get good grades to be accepted into a veterinary collage too.

I am 20 years old and I've been working since I got out of high school instead of going straight to college because I wasn't really sure what I wanted to pursue. I always said I wanted to be a vet but that seemed too far fetched since my grades weren't the best in highschool. I've realized that I'm never going to be happy until I at least 'try' to see if I can even make it into vet school. I am going to start college this summer and was wondering if there is any advice or tips you can share for someone with alot of self doubt ? Thanks !

Megan Reyes hi! Just wanted to say I was in the same boat as you! Always wanted to go to vet school, didn't feel like it could ever be feasible for me (pretty average student), so I picked a different undergrad major. After about two years, I realized I wouldn't be happy doing anything other than vet med, so I threw all my eggs into one basket and changed my major to general biology/pre-vet. I think there are so many other facets of getting accepted OTHER than just GPA (although it's still important), so if you can compensate by getting lots of experience then it could work out. I say go for it!!

+MaFaRuby XO Your determination is awesome! Getting a head start is definitely a good idea. While, I don't think learning some dog anatomy would be a bad thing in any way, there are a few things that might be a bit more useful. At least, here are the things that I'm glad I did/wish I would have done. I am so happy I took anatomy in high school! If your school offers it, take it! And I know some high schools have programs with the local community college if they don't offer it themselves, so be sure to check out your options! As for what I wish I would have done. And this might not sound super fun, but I wish I would have learned Latin! A few of my classmates took latin before vet school and they said they are so happy they did! Learning anatomy is kind of like learning a new language and a lot of the prefixes and suffixes (omo, brachio, costo, rectus, tarsus) are derived from latin. Does this help! If you have anymore questions just let me know!

You're such an inspiration, I start high school in two months and I am quite nervous. My friends and I have dreams of becoming veterinarians, we all study very hard and when we get stressed we always come to each other, the issue now is we were put in totally different classes. I am going to have a ton of work, I achieved a lot of the higher standard classes but I am especially trepidatious about AP bio, I have spoke with many kids in this class and they say it's a lot of work but it will help you in the long run and gives you an advantage in college. Anyway, what classes did you take in high school, and what were some of the key things you put on your application to stand out? Did you apply for scholarships? What animals do you specialize in? Thank you again you are a great inspiration, I always love to hear stories from people like you and learn about their journey and success, it gives me hope, thank you!!!

This might be a really weird question, but do you do a lot of speaking out loud in front of class? I want to be a vet very badly but my anxiety holds me back.
@BellaVet7 жыл бұрын
Honestly, I remember doing more of that in high school and in undergrad. In vet school I haven't had to speak in front of a large group of people yet so I wouldn't get to worried about that. However, I would really like to stress that you should have very good people skills! Remember, you patients can't talk so you have to rely on communication with you clients. And while that is usually more of a one-on-one situation it is very important to have good people skills as a vet. So if your at all worried about that aspect of things go ahead and try some volunteer opportunities where you'll have to work with people (soup kitchens, blood drives, 5k runs, etc) they will still look great on your vet school app!

im in high school right now. Im going into senior year in the fall. I feel like such a screw up. i barley passes physics and failed math this year. i feel as if i will never be a vet. :( Im applying myself this summer to study and prepare for the act and sat. But i feel like i ruined all of my chances. There is nothing id rather be than a vet. But i am so stupid.
@BellaVet7 жыл бұрын
You are just a baby! Haha and I don't mean that in a bad way! Please don't be so hard on yourself, you have not ruined any of your "chances" and you have so much time! I have several friends in vet school who didn't even know they wanted to be a vet until half way through college! Keep in mind I HATED physics with a PASSION, I also wasn't the biggest fan of math but I had a great teacher so it was alright. But I knew it was a necessary hurdle that I needed to work really hard to get over so I applied myself and got knocked down a few times before finally getting it. Also, I've posted this before in another comment about not feeling good or smart enough and how I think that that is ridiculous! So I'll copy and paste my response below. "Please don't stress about not being smart! You ARE smart! Honestly I could make an entire video on just this concept. But honestly I really don't love the word "smart" because it makes it sound like doctors and lawyers and people with advanced degrees were just naturally born with the ability to pass tests and remember everything. I just want to let you know that that is absolutely NOT TRUE. While processing information fast in your head can certainly help you, the most important thing is not being "smart" it's about working hard! You just have to be willing to work extremely hard for it :)" Also, I am so happy to hear that you are taking the initiative and preparing for your future tests! That shows that you have resilience and that is a huge requirement to becoming a veterinarian, and you're already showing it! You got this, don't be so hard on yourself and go get em!

Hi I am torn between by two majors animal science or biology which ones are going help with prerequites and getting into vet school more
@BellaVet8 жыл бұрын
Hmm, that depends on which school you go to and which schools you want to apply to. I would suggest going to see an advisor and cross check the prerequisites of the schools that you want to apply to with those two majors. As for experience, I chose animal science as a major over biology or zoology because it gave me more hands on experience (especially with livestock) and that was the deciding factor for me. Does this help? Please let me know if you have any more questions!
@jadebowers48938 жыл бұрын
hi bellavet i was wondering if you could do a video about what you learn in vet school i want to buy the right books to study early and i have so many questions like if your school dosent offer the surgical science department can you still be a veterinary surgeon and are vet surgeons the same thing as a vet? +BellaVet
@BellaVet8 жыл бұрын
Hey! Good questions! I will definitely add a video like that to the list! To try to answer your question now, at lease at my school, everyone takes a few surgery classes so that when you graduate and pass boards you will be able to do routine surgeries. If you want to do more than that you would stay in school and do an internship and/or a residence in surgery (you can specialize in different types of surgery as well). So to answer your question a veterinary surgeon is a vet that went back to school and got further training. I hope this helps! Please let me know if you have any more questions!

BellaVet thank you so much! As I am only 14 now i dont attend vet school obviously but i deffinetely hope to i have wanted to be a veterinarian all my life. Thank you so much for your videos they are so calming and informational. I do have another question though if you dont mind i am currently doing international baccularettes or IB you may have never heard of it because it is only offered at a few high schools it is hipgher than ap classess do you know if vet schools will take this into consideration?
@BellaVet8 жыл бұрын
+Jade Bowers, I have heard of these, but they were never offered to me so I don't know too much about IB courses. I think it is safe to assume that an advanced course is looked favorably upon by undergraduate universities. As far as veterinary school goes, they did not look at any of my high school grades or classes. However, if one of these courses counted for a college level vet school prerequisite (like biology or chemistry or something) as long as it counted for college credit the vet school may see that. But these schools tend to look at whole GPAs (like your GPA from your science classes, or your last 36 credits GPA) over individual classes. Again, this is just from my experience and it may vary by individual. Does this answer your question? Feel free to ask any more that you have!

@BellaVet7 жыл бұрын
Hey! You're welcome! To be honest, I'm a first year so I haven't really had much of a chance to handle big exotic animals. However, if you are interested in exotics, there are certain opportunities, like symposiums or conferences, where you can handle them! That being said, in vet school safety is a priority and there will always be someone around to help you stay safe when handling any type of animal for the first time!

Just to be sure Vet school is only for post graduates?
@BellaVet7 жыл бұрын
Yup! In the US that is correct. Although some schools do allow you to enter into vet school without having graduated college (but you still have to spend a few years there completing required courses). So either way you have to go to college before vet school, you just aren't required to graduate with a bachelors before moving onto vet school. Does that make sense?
