Perhaps if iron work had not been omitted Wales could be well known for their early superior stance in the iron works world. I owe my Welsh-American heritage to just that fact. When railways were at their beginning here in the USA, Welsh iron workers were sought out and many migrated here. The B & O Railroad was the first commercial rail in the Americas and it was predominantly Welsh ironworkers who built the first rails. This ironworks was located in Mount Savage, Maryland in the Allegheny Mountains. Ironwork is large in the history of Wales.

G'Day Tim. I'm an Australian of two-thirds Welsh ethnicity. My grandfather worked in the steel mills in Wales. Other ancestors worked in the coal mines. I have a number of American DNA cousins of Welsh ancestors, through Ancestry, but I haven't worked out the connections, yet. Thanks for the history lesson. I knew that the Welsh migrated to the USA and used their coal mining skills but didn't know that they were also involved in the railways. Australia is a huge exporter of iron-ore.

You did not mention that : Wales is known as "The Land Of Song" as the Welsh people are very musically orientated, especially producing many choirs. They are the first and true people of Ancient Britain. The Welsh language is wonderful and unique. Wales gave mineral resources to other countries eg. coal and slate. Welsh mythology is fascinating.

Lloyd George was NOT prime minister in the 19thC. He became PM in 1916. The daffodil is the national flower because of its kinship to the much older national symbol of the leek. Cenin is Welsh for leek, while Cenin Pedr (Peter's leek) is Welsh for the daffodil. The red dragon was flown by Welsh archers in support of the Welsh Henry Tudor (Henry VII) at Bosworth in 1485, but Roman chronicler Ninnius wrote of the Romano-Welsh legion going to Rome in the 4thC behind the Cambrian dragon banner. I like your video, but please do more homework before your next attempt.

Very good, but few points you got wrong. Wales does have a national sport, its football. Its played nationally in all parts of Wales. Rugby which is often referred to as a 'national' sport in Wales, is in fact a regional game. It's played predominantly in the south of Wales and in very small areas of south Wales, which is all the more remarkable given how successful we have become winning 13 Grandslams. As for Welsh Rarebit being the national dish, that's nonsense. I was born and bred in Wales and cheese on toast is not a 'dish', let alone a National dish. You neglected to mention the rich food culture and focused upon the superficial clichés which ate more of an English invention. What about lava bred for example, or call but to name a few simple well known dishes. One significant matter which is also omitted by English commentators is that Wales was the first industrialised nation on earth, not England.
@lightwoodnotwalesplusnothi76722 жыл бұрын
Now you are just talking shit Rugby is supreme.
@GiggleBytes2011 Жыл бұрын
I know I'm a year late to this discussion, but Welsh Rarebit cannot be described as merely 'cheese on toast' it's much more complex than that. But I agree, it isn't the national dish of Wales, Lamb Cawl would have been a better choice.

It certainly isn’t football. Look at how many watch the national game. Cardiff sells out for rugby but the national football team doesn’t even have its own stadium

Philip Carl Roberts. Absolutely right. We are not on the union flag and we are not on the Royal crest. England are on twice, and scotland and ireland are on once. Never mind. We have the best flag, 🏴 the best national anthem and the original language of Britain. English is a mongral language made up of Anglo Saxon, danish, Scandinavian, French and the words made up by Thomas More and Shakespeare - usually from Greek and Latin. They do have some Welsh words. Afon is Welsh for river, hence England has three River Avons, one of which flows through Shakespeare's birthplace - "Stratford". Aber means mouth of the river and Scotland has a city called ABERDEEN.

International audiences would also know the two Rhyses, Matthew Rhys (The Americans) and Rhys Ifans (a gazillion successful films), as well as Iwan Rheon (Game of Thrones, who could forget that bastard Ramsay). The Welsh also gifted the world the eisteddfod, which is something that exists even in Australia today (although perhaps with less Welsh language involvement). Furthermore, everyone knows about that town with the ridiculous name that makes for a lovely tourist trap. And speaking of places to visit, what about Hay-on-Wye, which has been featured in many, many videos and articles?

That sounded like an English person trying to tell the world what Welsh people like? I'd put cockles and Lava bread well above Welsh rarebit, which I've never actually eaten in my 66 years of life. Welsh cakes, which is the English name for Teisen Lap or bake stones, should be made with lard, not butter, and only eaten cold with a cup of tea. And what happened to the Eisteddfod, surely a bigger puller than the Royal Welsh show ever was? BTW the English built the castles to try and control the Welsh.
@walesguidebook3 жыл бұрын
Thanks for your detailed comment (I'm actually Welsh 😂). I take your point about Eisteddfod and Lava Bread but I didn't want to make the video too long. I used to work in a bakery that made Welsh cakes and we used butter, so much nicer than lard, you should try it!
@timbayliss77203 жыл бұрын
@@walesguidebook My mother was a fine Welsh professional head cook who's 'bake stones' were so good that family friends still mention them to this day, always made with lard, never butter. The 'cakey' version made with butter today in bakeries are nothing like the real thing, you shouldn't eat real ones hot, using lard they don't taste right until they're well cooled. I've actually been making them myself for 30 odd years and still haven't mastered it but I'll keep practicing. My mother held Welsh rarebit in total disdain, she wouldn't even discuss it let alone make it, which is why I've never eaten it myself.

I am not saying Industrial technology is bad it started as clean healthy nature powered technology in Scottish Stuart England during the 1600's and in Scottish Wales during the 1800's. It is now found out that my agricultural industrialist family of Scottish Wales is not really the envy of the world as they are just a smith of the farming culture that innovated what the Scottish invented during the Industrial revolution that was created by farmers in Scottish Stuart England during the 1600's and not in Wales during the 1800's where my Industrialist family realistically sought to deindustrialise to minimalise industry before the battle of Trafalgar caused the reindustrialisation of Wales to inconvenience the Welsh with the dominance of industry.
