Oh no, Ken is lame!! Today we wanted to share what is wrong with Ken's leg and why he is taking a break from work for a little bit! We also have a very special lumber delivery to our daughter Abby's house! She is working on renovating a fixer upper house down the road and she needs lumber for her new porch. Today we are sawing the lumber with our Woodmizer sawmill and bringing it over with Bill & Baron.
Check out my daughter Abby's channel (A Drill & A Dream) ► / adrilladream

Jim got the youngsters because he knows how easy it is to suddenly run out of horses. Doing it this way is better than buying "made" horses, as this way he develops a deep bond and mutual understanding. Besides, good finished horses are way expensive in comparison with unhandled weaners. I think that Baron sort of fell out of the sky, Jim grabbed him when he came up for sale, and he's turned out a very handy horse.

I believe that noise when they were trotting is sheath noise. I read somewhere that it's a gelding thing, though on reflection I don't know whether they meant geldings as opposed to stallions, or male horses in general. Either way, I honestly wish you'd reconsider gelding Baron! While I understand the added problems that keeping a stallion entails, he's so magnificent and it just seems a real pity to castrate him.

Lovely day for a drive! Later, Brenda, when you have a minute, run back down the road and snag some of that red sumac; looks like the kind that makes a great lemonade substitute. Inspect the plant and look up the characteristics first, of course, but on my terrible laptop screen it looked like it might be the right kind. If it is--awesome! Free vitamin C! Enjoyed this video! The sound you asked about when the boys were trotting is from the sheath and can occur when a stallion or gelding trots. This is thought to be caused by tensing of the abdominal muscles causing air to be sucked into the sheath. It comes and goes with my horse and only when trotting.

So, that sound, I'm guessing, is the gelding sheath erm....fart. Air gets in there, and stuff bounces around, and gets squished out. I think you should take Lady, Bree and Bill. Maybe Bree can stand nearby with Lady, or you can tie her to Lady, or just leave her in a nice safe place. I think Baron could be good, but you'd need to probably keep a stud chain or bridle on him at all times outside of his stall. I'm not sure how many mares or other stallions are likely to be there, and I agree it's kind of a disaster waiting to happen. but, if you're doing a logging demo, I think showing the variables that can happen with a team is pretty helpful for the learners. Especially stallion or mare/foal handling. And Baron being a Suffolk Punch could be further educational. Good luck!

It's always hard to see a faithful old horse suffering from something. I was feeding my 28 year old mare tonight and thinking about all the years we have been together and all the things we've done, the colts she's trained, the students whom she has been their first harnessing and driving experience...so many things. She is looking old but still sound and healthy, used her to rake a bit this summer, and some students were working her on the cart, and skidding small logs at a workshop. A good investment. It will be a hard time when she goes. You reminded me I need to book the vets in for fall vaccinations, tetanus, rabies, eee, wee, and west nile. The cellulitis, is it a viral thing or bacterial? I've never had to deal with it. I'm trying to get a little shack put together for myself before winter, tough to work 2 jobs, farm, log, and get anything extra done!

I always maintain I had some of my longer lived horses longer than most marriages last!!! Unlike most other animals we humans form relationships with, horses and humans entrust their lives to each other on a daily basis. Dogs (apart from guide dogs), cats, sheep, cattle etc have a different relationship with humans in that sense. It is not such an intense reliance on each other for keeping each other safe from harm.

The noise when the horses are running is a noise that comes from the sheath. Some say if you clean the sheath then it stops the noise. I’m not convinced that works, but it is a noise from the air around the sheath.

Had to chuckle a bit watching Baron lope while Bill maintained a steady trot. Amazing what a different leg length results in, in terms of gait. The two I worked with beginning nearly 70 years ago stood 18&2 and 19&1 hands respectively, so when one trotted the other did so as well. They were both quite "mature", so there was very little trotting.....even with very light loads.

Thank you for the info on Eastern Equine Encephalitis deaths in your area☹️ I'm in Northern California but West Nile was found in my daughter/granddaughter's town. I ordered 3 West Nile Vaccine boosters for their 3 horses because they are valuable HS Rodeo Horses. We always vaccinate for Eastern, Western & West Nile in their other shots, but I was alarmed at the discovery right in their area. Vet bills are too expensive & euthanasia is almost always the outcome after $$$ treatment.

Since he's already bred a number of mares and knows what to do, it'll be a while. Always depends on the individual horse, but at least 3-6 months before he'll be "calm" and probably a few months longer before he can be around Lady out of harness and behave. Now, how long will it take Lady to accept that he's changed? Good question! lol

Hi Brenda.... I asked the same question years ago when I got my geldings and stallion. I was told back then it was due to air in the sheath. Here's Google's answer too. Also, it doesn't necessarily mean you need to clean the sheath. Google....."caused by tensing of the abdominal muscles causing air to be sucked into the sheath. This is particularly noticeable at an extended trot or animated trot as pressure is created in the sheath with stretching of the abdominal wall from increased length of stride. It is considered a normal finding." Hope this helps. Enjoy the fall season. Our flies have FINALLY started to die off 😊

I'm sorry that the Amish have lost so many horses due to the West Nile Virus. I sincerely hope that they will see the value in vaccinating all of their horses annually. They, of all people, should be diligent in doing that given how much they relie on their horses for everything. I hope they realize that they have a good vet in the area who can attend to their cattle's and horses' health when needed.

Awe poor Ken. Hope he's better soon. I was surprised to see Bill pass by the water and go straight to his stall after you dropped the lumber off at Abby's house. Is that unusual that he wouldn't be thirsty after that? I see Baron got a good fill up. Just curious. Great video. Just love your farm and your beautiful horses. You and Brenda take such great care of them.

I believe that the sound you refer to when the horses trot(or run ) has something to do with a stud and its related to the sheath on the horse, please correct me if I am wrong. Yes, coffee sounds good ! Hope Ken is well soon and have a great week end.

Get well soon Ken 🥰. It’s fun to watch you deliver stuff to Abby’s, I think Baron wanted to run home but Bill said no. 😊

One of my favorite uncle's who passed away many many years ago had a horse who looked just like her. Her name was Butterscotch. I'm so happy for you and I agree about the previous owner. She knew what and when the right time was too let go. Kudos to her! 💜💜💜💜💜

Poor Ken, I know exactly how the boy feels because I have bouts of cellulitis myself. In fact, I'm just getting over having it in my left leg and foot. Let me tell you, it is very painful as well as serious. In humans, if left untreated, you can lose a limb. When I see Baron get into a trot or gallop, I always think what a fun horse he'd be to ride. Maybe someday Jim will ride him in the pasture like I've seen him ride Bill!🥰 I know Abby is anxious to get her porch built!!!! The other day when she and Jay walked over to the creek to fill buckets with water for the concrete, I got a great view of the back of her house and it's beautiful!!! I hope sweet Ken gets better soon. He is such a gorgeous horse. He's a "Black Beauty" for sure🥰 You all have a great weekend and I'll see you back Monday!

I enjoyed watching the logs being turned into lumber. I hope Ken's leg heals quickly. The drive to and from Abbeys was beautiful. Also the return to the barn with cats waiting for you is excellent.

When are you going to build a hitching post at Abby’s?encephalitis is transmitted by mosquito usually but can live as a virus in a host or us a long time and when stress may happen it can flair if our body is wore down. My father got it in Feb of 2000 and was put in a coma almost twenty minutes after going to the hospital. I don’t think Ken would have that but come warm weather I would put spray for insects on a cloth and apply it to the horses legs, belly side of face to give them relief esp. when in the woods
