So many similarities between Pakistan and India. Except geographic boundaries, the state of media is so similar. Not to mention the similarities in demagoguery. In simple terms, ullu banao campaign going on both sides. Honestly, this conversation just reinforces Atif Mian's argument about incompetence being rampant in the country. How could they not see that the type of polarisation/culture war they're promoting will eventually bite them back as well? How could PTI not see that the dissent rules they're passing through could potentially also be used against him? How could they not see the flaws with strategic depth? I mean, the list goes on really. Almost every one of these things could've been avoided if they'd rigourously scrutinised their assumptions yet here we are.

I think the problems honest media faces in Pak is not different from other 3rd world countries. The political rhetoric is so bad & partisan in Pak because unfortunately the new kid who was supposed to break the status quo & who was supposed to be non-corrupt - turns out he has a feudalistic mindset (only those can talk as if they superior to the rest) and actually dumb at governing. Any leader who wants to lead a nation cannot be with a superiority complex - you have to have certain humbleness in the opportunity to lead such a large populace - he behaves as a gully team leader - whose only way of leadership is showing he is macho by abusing the opposition - this juvenile nature of IK is biggest sad truth of Pak politics. Wish there were other better options.

Another great podcast, thank you. Just wanted to add, the 'jismani remand' is one of the cruelest and a law against humanity. Think. Why would any law agency need to take a physical remand of a person? If they have a case, file the case and let the accused have his day in court. If you want to ask questions, and don't have a case yet, ask the person the questions by inviting the person or going to the person, with the person having the right to have a lawyer represent. There is no justification to physical remand other than accepting it as legal torture. As someone who has studied law, what is your opinion?

Enjoyed! I would though argue that PML-N aligned journalists have taken a more drastic u-turn: e.g., crying on every rupee increase in fuel price during PTI's gov to silence now. On the other hand (depending on how you look at it), individuals like Imran Riaz, Moeed Pirzada, Arshad shareef, sticked to their idea that PML-N PPP do not deserve coming back.

They also did the same u turn. The things they criticized before Imran came to power, they stopped criticizing when he was in power.

You're conflating two different things. Stances on parties and policies are two different things. PML-N aligned journalists would still be critical of PTI whilst the latter's journalists changed their position entirely on issues of censorship and certain institutions. It's easy to put a spin on stuff if you're comparing different things.

@@waleedabbas4996 True. Like some journalists who raised the censorship and 'vote ki izzat' issues in PTI's time are not too bothered by the current state of affairs. Exceptions being Cyril Almeida and Absaar Alam
